Already GOTY? WTH?

Post » Thu Oct 28, 2010 3:24 am

I'm not taking it "seriously" but how can it even be called an opinion? You can't form an opinion about how a game will turn out based on a few screenshots and a short trailer. There isn't even enough data out there to make an educated guess!

Gaming Irresponsibly is already considering Skyrim for their GOTY award. 6 MONTHS BEFORE IT IS RELEASED

http://gamingirresponsibly.com/why-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-should-be-your-game-of-the-year/

Hmm...I guess it was a slow news day.

The bold and underlined part pretty much sums up my thoughts. Is this a serious site? I anticipate that I'll love Skyrim possibly more than Oblivion (which I like more than Morrowind). I was not disappointed in the two games in the series I've played, so I'm hoping Skyrim will blow me away even further. It would be however, irresponsible for a game website to start declaring something GOTY months before it comes out.

Well, as much as I hate the idea of proclaiming the year's best game long before it comes out, in my eyes this isn't that great of a year. Skyrim, dark souls, and catherine are really all Im looking forward to for the rest of the year. And I fully expect Skyrim to be the best.

That said, I was mega stoked about Brink and it's fun, but not the end all be all of onlineness fun that I expected.

Just read the title. "Why Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Should Be Your Game Of The Year"

It says 'should' not 'will.' It's clearly intended as an opinion.

I just want know what the guy who wrote the article is smoking. He mentions Megaton being in Oblivion and some other stuff that just doesn't make sense. I'm sure Skyrim will win some GOTY awards but there's so many it's kinda hard for it not to. It is an Elder Scrolls game after all.

This is a bad thing?

I'm so praying for this to not happen, but if Skyrim winds up being as big of a letdown as Mercs2, then yes.

the competition is really big

Yeah, there's a load of competition. It's a shame none of them reach the level and depth of TES series though. I think a GOTY is a given for this game, considering the development time and knowing Bethesda well enough.. TES is Bethesda's flagship - they wont let it sink that easily.

Atleast Bethesda is doing a hellufajob marketing the game, which would increase the sales by hundreds of thousands even if the game turns out to be total disaster.

No, a GOTY is based on sales, which can include pre-orders. GOTY means nothing, aside from having good marketing. Besides what Skyrimmer said, I don't know if there's anything else to add...

oh right, games have gotten GOTY for selling well in one month of the year.

Can you elaborate on why you say it is based on sales? Which "GOTY" are you referring to?

There are many GOTY awards, handed out by every gaming magazine and website based on editorial preferences (or perhaps which publisher advertises the most in their publication).

Several different games will get some 2011 GOTY awards and then the publishers will release re-promotes of these games in 2012 with new packaging and DLC, etc.

This is Bethesda we are talking about. Every single game they've made since Morrowind was GOTY material. It will be the same for Skyrim.

wow. i agree thats ridiculous.

just as ive argued with people who bash development decisions pre-release, ill also argue with a GOTY nomination pre-release.

Exactly, it's safe to say TES series will continue to deliver.. and evolve, for the better or the worse. (That's the question isn't it? But it will certainly sell...)

Did Mercs2 ever even have a chance to be GotY?

Thanks for pointing out that horrible mistake. We took a look at the initial submission and realized an editor made a fatal error. After converting the article back to it's original form it makes infinitely more sense!

OP: Why are you acting surprised..? Heard of these games called Morrowind, Oblivion, or Fallout 3? Bethesdas last 3 games? All GOTY?
Suffice to say, there's a 99% chance Skyrim will win at least one GOTY.

Considering Morrowind, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 all won at least one GOTY, I'd say Skyrim is a frontrunner.

This.

There are more games this year that will grab at least one of those GOTY awards. There is no one and only best game of the year.

Not sure why it matters(sense multiple games get gotys),I think it's safe to say Skyrim will at least win one Game of the year award.

I saw it, further proves that the person who wrote the article doesn't actually know much about Oblivion.

Also a second glaring error that I wasn't 100% sure on: Wayfarer's Cave. No such location. The guy appears to be confusing Fallout 3 and a Morrowind mod with content from Oblivion. How that can happen is beyond me.

Gamereactor is already very keen on Skyrim. They placed it #1 on their list of the "hottest" games of 2011. Skyrim will get GOTY, and plenty of them.
