Alright, so who else hates Dogmeat?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 9:47 am

I like that I have a portable storage chest following me around, but when I'm trying to snipe someone, he runs right in my face and stares at me. When I'm trying to be stealthy, he runs out in the middle of the spotlights or runs through the can traps. When I tell him to stay, for whatever reason, every enemy within a mile can detect him. When I'm trying to walk through a doorway, he stands right in front of me and blocks me. When I run into a closet to do some looting, he blocks the exit. When I'm low on health and I'm trying to retreat to cover, he stands right behind me. When I'm trying to pull headshots on enemies, they are busy swinging at him because he's licking their ankles or whatever the hell he does near enemies because he sure as [censored] doesn't damage them.

I'd love a mod so I could kill him and just attach his corpse to me so I can drag him around like a dufflebag full of junk because honestly, he isn't useful for anything but being a storage chest.

Also, I know I can leave him in Sanctuary, but that will limit how much I can carry.

That's pretty much every companion from my experience, but yeah dogmeat is probably the worst.

Dogmeat? Who?

Oh! That mutt that's been relegated to mooching around Sanctuary Hills since I started the game?

Yeah, first thing I did when he wanted to "help" me.

He does get in the way but the advantages of having him around outweigh the negatives.

Not so far.

If he isn't blocking doorways or aisles for me he's running off and pulling enemies. "Your dog is in danger" or whatever the message is that pops up is downright annoying. Yes the dog is getting shot to pieces; he ran into the open and started attacking when I was sneaking and attempting to snipe the enemies. The point of sneaking when Superdog Krypto charges in like the Light Brigade is what, exactly? I can't seem to leave him behind. He can't die. I can't kill him out of sheer frustration.

I hope someone makes a "Kennel Dogmeat" mod. If I keep playing for any length of time, I would so install it.

There are a bunch of companions, some of which will be very effecive in combat if that's what annoys you about Dogmeat. They will all get in the way occasionally but probably less than Dogmeat. Also I'm not sure but I don't think Dogmeat can actually sneak. Humans can though, so you're probably better off getting a human companion. Some are better at it than others though but I don't want to spoil anything so you'll have to look that up yourself.

@Talaran You can't leave Dogmeat behind? Maybe try recruiting another companion, that will fire Dogmeat automatically. Then you can just fire the new companion as well if you wish, and you'll be able to go out alone.

I totaly get it that he interferes with you. The thing is, none of this happened to me !
When reading your post I was like : oh my god, SO frustrating. I can totaly see it and a dslike of dogmeat starts to appear in me as well...
BUT ! As I said, for some magical reason, dogmeat a.i. has proven very adequate for my gameplay.

When I stealth, he's careful no to be seen, when I move, he's always near but somewhere else sniffing something and following me from a perfect distance. when there are too many enemies he's slowing one down by biting them, when I snipe, I have NEVER seen him in my scope, not once.

One thing that I really like about him, is that the way he moves and follows you is really similar to how a dog would follow you and it makes him seem real.

I do not know why your experience is different, and I can totaly see it happening...

But I love everything about Dogmeat except his name.

Keep an eye out for Dog Armor btw. It's quite rare so I think a lot of people will miss it. You can have Dogmeat wear it and it looks awesome. :)

I prefer CowMeat

Bahdum bash.

I really like the way I can use the activate key from far away and assign orders its really nifty and it gets stuff done quick its getting to be reflex to just tell a companion to sit tight every now and then for those times something annoying might happen.

Whats crazy is that there are a lot of things you can do like enter sneak and tell Dogmeat to attack someone, and he'll go do it even if its really far away.

Last night I gave him a dog chain and googles, he looks awesome.

Yep. Found him, told him to go away. He hangs around Sanctuary now (while I'm based out of Red Rocket).

Shot the mutant dog that tried to follow me. Told the guy selling a dog that I didn't want one.

Haven't used any companions so far, and just grabbed the second rank of Lone Wanderer (need more capacity, these guns & armor bits are getting heavier as I mod them )

Dogmeat is a companion and has the inherent limits of any AI comoanion, but that said, he's never, ever once been in my scope when sniping, and only time he blocks me is when i move to a doorway and stop in middle of doorway and try to turn back.

When it does happen i just flick my mouse to do a quick go command to tell DM to move out of my way.

Long story short, most of what OP describes which sounds awful has luckily not happened to my dogmeat, and i play a fairly stealth based char. I actually see dogmeat crouch down and slink along with me when i am in stealth.

He isnt the strongest help but i use him as my invulnerable meat cushion to distract enemies, and just love all the spotting he does for loot. If lone wanderer didnt work with DM I may have to think a bit re keeping him around 100%, but since LW works just fine with Dogmeat, he's the perfect companion while still getting LW perk.

My 2 cents is that is how LW is intended and not a bug. The iconic wastland character Mad Max was by any definition a lone wanderer. Yet he had his loyal mutt.

It's not that rare. I've had a full set of armor on him right after we left Concord. Raider Attack Dogs almost always have armor on them.

I have three actually.

As for the message about him being in danger, I've never seen that message, so I'm glad that doesn't pop up because I have no qualms about throwing grenades and molotov cocktails right on top of him when he draws in a large group to him. Then again, I would also love a mod where I could attack landmines to him like some of the Molerats and send him off. Maybe then he would be more than just a four-legged suitcase.

A meat curtain that keeps on giving...

If they are shooting at the dog/companion, they are not shooting at me.

I have had him for a while but he is going to be parked up somewhere nice and comfortable, I will just visit him occasionally. He is costing too much in stimpacks, I feel guilty everytime he is hurt so I have to jab him with a stimpack needle.

Ah yes dogmeat, those dialog options...

1. Hey there you! <3

2. Where did you come from <3

3. You cute doggie! <3

4. You cute bag of fleas! <3

Yes I hate him. But apparently my character can't hate him or shoo him away. I shoot him in the face and he continues to stare at me. So much for rp.

(And don't anyone dare say "omg why would you shoot a dog you psychopath it's not politically correct to hate dogs omg", please just don't.)

To me dogmeat is the best companion Bethesda has ever made. Does not talk, Helps you find stuff, Does not get in the way much and when he does you can usually jump over him. He does tricks. I say he has the highest I.Q. of any Bethesda companion.

Yep same for me I hated dogmeat in FO3, the way the OP describes him is exactly how he was back then. I was ready to go solo again especially as I play stealthy. In FO4 though he is still with me, love him so far. If he ever does start interfering with my play through though I'll send him packing.

One dear to me says dog followed without Him asking. All He did was "greet the dog" apparently that is enough.

He didn't want the dog to follow and says it whines all the time and wants stimpacks.

Oh yes and He said the dog "found something" and when He went to look it had found a hoard of molerats!
