Alternative Start (mod) and CTDs

Okay, so I have two problems here with varying levels of severity.

I have recently gone through doing some med-heavy modding of Oblivion, previously I was rather vanilla with just a couple small mods/tweaks. I have FCOM (with MMM/OOO/OWC/Fran), OMOBS, Better Cities (all), COBL, All Natural, Armamentarium Complete, RBP, Better Redguards, etc installed (I'll provide a list below for more details). I have BAINed the heck out of my install and everything was fine at first, started a new game (copied and deleted all my old saves out) several times to test things, and it looked like things went smoothly more or less.

I should probably state now that, before activating Let there be Darkness (and More Darkness) my vanilla install (ie QTP3 and such installed, mods installed but NOT active), everything was much darker than Vanilla should have been. We're talking need a torch to see in my cell, and the wall torch in it didn't provide much light at all. I'll provide a list of the archives in my Bash Installers folder so someone might be able to tell me why this occurred.

Moving on I went through the usual process of adding a few mods at a time, loading, saving, rinsing, repeating. I decided that I didn't want to go through the prison level so I installed a few different Alt Start mods. I say a few different because they all caused CTDs, but not right away. I tried the awesome http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11495, setup my character, went to sleep to start things, and after it loaded it CTDed. I DLed a few more, cause obviously there was something conflicting and I hoped to avoid looking for the cause and thought maybe it was just that one. I moved on to http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3016, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=822, and finally http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1979. Every single time I got to a first loading screen it CTDed. Now I figure there's a problem whenever I try to skip the Tutorial, which makes zero sense to me as nothing I have installed should mess with that or care about it. So I went back to the first Alt Start and tried it without only RBP and and things went smoothly. So I started a new game, made my char, went to sleep, and woke up at IC's Waterfront with no problems. I saved and started to add mods slowly, doing FCOM first and then COBL and the like not worrying about beautification mods, just the nitty gritty stuff. Loaded up good, no errors so I went into the Temple District and loaded it then saved and went back into the Waterfront.... CTD after loading screen. I made a new game with only the Alt Start and RBP and Better Redguards, saved, exited, loaded, entered Temple Dist, left Temple Dist, went back in, repeated several times with no CTDs. Saved while in Temple Dist, added basic mods, loaded save, left Dist and CTD.

Any clue why a simple Alt Start mod is totally screwing up my game?
I would love to be able to skip the tutorial, but at the same time I really need to fix the Prison/Subterrane/Sewers (and I bet all dungeons) from being so dang dark without having messed with anything (from what I know).

Also, I just remembered that I was trying to use All Natural - Real Lights.esp and for some reason when I activate it and start a new game or load a save from the Prison cell, the torch in that cell is not lit. Odd, eh?

Which BC components are you not using, there are so many of them I cannot tell which are missing (if any.) You really could not use the FULL version? Also, your load order is incorrect and you have plugins that should be deactivated because they are merged into the bashed patch. (Mergeable plugins are distinguished with green text in Wrye Bash.) Run BOSS on that load order again. Update BOSS. I am pretty sure those plugins are already in the current masterlist. I use the Pure Steel Blade mod, but I will check right now to be sure.

If there not selected when you build the Patch.......there NOT selected to be included. so there not.
So yes you would have to first select them to have them included. When you click a box to include it . Think Hey i just put that IN my Patch.

Also...note to Tomlong..cant remember the OOO removals..IE:remove tag for Factions and Relations??Scripts??<<

I checked for those unrecognized plugins in the BOSS masterlist, and they are not there. I am posting about them now, so do not worry about them too much. However, you should move the "PureSteelBlade.esp" up with the rest of the new item mods. It does not have conflicts that I am aware of, so you can just stick it in that section in alphabetical order. Move the RBP optional module up with the other RBP plugins. You should probably load it right after the main plugin(s).

Generally speaking, yes, merge what Bash will allow you to merge. The exception being if the mod's readme directs otherwise. Ideally mods that shouldn't be merged would also be tagged NoMerge, but that isn't always the case.

Alright, sounds good. I will make those changes and see what happens.

Well, everything looked good. I got into the Waterfront Tunnel (which tripped me out cause I didn't know about that from BC haha) and I went to Market Dist, saved, reloaded, all was good. Then I left the Market Dist through the main gate and CTDed ><
So I reloaded the original save and tried it again. Went in and out of the tunnel, saved outside. Loaded up, went in and out, fast travelled to IC main gates, went out of IC, walked down to beginning of bridge and stood there and looked around at sky landscape and then sky and turned around, CTD

Ouch. That could be anything from a bad mesh to a dirty plugin. However, try installing the FULL version of Better Cities first. Do you even have the latest version installed?

Yep, DLed it within the past couple of weeks. This week even, I think.

Uninstalled BC, reinstalled with Unified plugins, activated, rebuilt Bashed Patch, ran BOSS.
Loaded my save and decided to go take a dive into the lake, swam a bit and suddenly CTD :/

It might also be helpful to know how much memory the game is using up and how much your system has on it. You could be running into a more general issue of resource shortage.

I haven't checked mem usage, but as it's a few minutes into the game I can't see that being the issue. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64bit with 4GB RAM and I applied the 4GB patch to my exe.


Have you tried installing BC full and made sure you have the latest version? Try that, and let me see your load order after you make the changes (which should include rerunning BOSS after installing BC again.)


I went ahead last night and uninstalled Oblivion, deleted the My Games/Oblivion folder and the Bethesda Softworks\... folders. Reinstalled GOTY last night and the related utilities and OBSE scripts (I added OSR and USV this time). Right now I am taking a quick look at different mods from your site list and then moving on to installing my archives again. I'm going to doublecheck my install order in Bash against your site, then work on getting things installed. Also, I loaded a new game just now and as it stands the lighting is okay. I didn't check originally, but I think the extra darkness was because Let There Be (More) Darkness was installed, and even though inactive it made things dark still.

I'm going to add things slowly this time, I think. I want to know what something screws things up.

Shouldn't have been, I pulled them out of my mod list and rebuilt the patch several times after that. But I dunno, could have made things wonky anyways, and that's the only thing I can think of that would have done it.

It cannot do anything permanent to your game. It only made light tweaks, must've been something else. Anyway, where does your setup stand?

Gotcha.
Took longer than I thought deciding on if I wanted to add/replace stuff. Ended up making some good choices though, I think, and I'm about to start sorting my list now.

That looks fairly good. I understand the body replacers thing. That is fine. Also keep in mind that the Keychain mod is a UI mod, so it should be installed after any UI mods when you use them. I have revamped TESIV: POSItive's main http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/installmods page, so you can reference that as well.

Alright, after a few hours away I have everything reinstalled. I haven't built the Bashed yet, mostly because I don't want to activate it and have a bunch of plugins be active all at once. I'm going to build it after I get things stable. Also, I moved the Keychain to below the Immersive Interface mod, then installed it. Right now I am activating all the FCOM stuff, then I will move on to COBL. I saved my game in the tunnels part of the prison, where you are trying to get back to the King and his guards. I'll keep going from there, moving along each bit and saving, then activating more mods. I think that those few minutes of playing each interval will at least let me 'prove' that things are working each time.

I'll keep posted with what I find. Last thing I will check is if I can get the Alt Star by Ship working (if not, at least I know the Prison and Tunnels are seeable now!).

Yeah I thought of that and so once I have finished everything else I will start a new game and add the Alt Start mod, then see if I crash again. What I want to do is get this save fully modded then leave and go outside, then see if I CTD like before. I think it might be the Alt Start conflicting with something, this is the only way I have to 'prove' it lol

So yeah, I'm trying to cover all my bases and make this go smoothly. So far, so good. All I have left is the small item adders, All Natural, BC, RAEVWD, and the other location adders/changers.

edit: Also, I'm making a new save file each time so I can log my changes properly
