In a sudden, unexpected incident between the two, I'd give better than even odds on the Dunmer. The versatility, overall resistance to harshness, and general nasty disposition would favor a quick resolution of the fight by whatever method happened to be expedient at the time. Given a known conflict, and time to plan and arm, I believe the Altmer would come prepared for anything the Dunmer could throw at him, and then some. The kind of arrogance which the Altmer possess only comes from long years of BEING the best, and knowing it. Staged combat in advance: Altmer 3 out of 4.

The Dunmer also have a lot more internal conflicts to deal with, and any organized response is likely to degenerate into a series of small independent actions which can be dealth with piecemeal by any opponent, much the way that Tiber Septim handled them. Their mastery of assassination and deceit, on the other hand, are to be feared. War between the two: Altmer overall, but the Dunmer would pull enough shadowy tricks behind the scenes to make it a costly win for the Altmer.

Depends on when this takes place. If the Dunmer have the tribunal on their side then the Altmer are in serious trouble, but currently the tribunal gods are all gone and the Dunmer are scattered refugees after the ministry fell.

Nightblades etc, dumner, mages altmer. But at high levels are pretty the same, just with almer with a lot more magicka, but also a lot more weaknessess. Now in MW I'm playing an altmer shaman or something (custom class with spear, magic, h2h, unarmed etc.) and I like the big magicka pool (atronach bs), but generally I like more dumner, they seem more warm people. Even if I have to say in MW altmer are not so arrogant, as in Oblivion.

I'm a huge Morrowind fan, so what? That doesn't mean I don't have the ability to make rational comparisons without adding a touch of bias.

Dunmer are stronger because they can adapt to a wider variety of combat situations.

An Altmers greatest strength is also his/her greatest weakness.

Not to mention the Altmer are frail armed combatants, and are mostly confined to magicka-type specializations.

I'm not saying Altmer are totally useless either, or that Dunmer are all-powerful.

But in a duel between the two I can assure you the Dark Elf would be victorious.

Which Altmer? Which Dunmer? There are millions of both race, you know, with widely different skill sets.

This topic have sense if we talk about level 1-15 altmers and dunmers and actually all other races. But everybody know that at level 40 an altmer can be the master of the fighters guild and thieves guild with armorer and sneak both at 100, and that an orc can be the archmage, with 100 conjuration, illusion and mysticism.

Its impossible to decide with specificity, in my opinion. I'm not trying to be an over-intelligent ass.

If I'm pitting an Altmer that is a very powerful mage, against a very powerful Dunmer mage, the Dunmer would probably win. The Altmer's weakness to spells, with the Dunmer's destruction bonus, would probably cause the Altmer's downfall. Also, the Dunmer are more agile than the Altmer. If I pit a master swordsman/bowman Dunmer, against a very powerful Altmer mage, I would expect the Altmer to annihilate the Dunmer with spells.

This is just personal opinion; I'm no lore buff, so feel free to prove me wrong with facts.

In mw a dunmer with 100 int have 100 magicka, an altmer 250 (without birthsign bonuses). With atronach dunmer would have 300, altmer 450, so as magic there is nothing better than an altmer. Breton are quite nice too but not so much, but in Oblivion were really overpowered respect other races (50% resist magic were applied to all spells, also elemental, and magicka pool was not so less respect altmer).

altmer all day they could summon an army of golden saints, turn invisable, and levitate 30 feet in the air before the dunmer has a chance to get close then rain down high level frost and shock spells easy win dunmer are way overrated

Altmer weaknessess are their strenght in magic (custom spells). Dunmer are great too but resist fire and ancestor protection is really nothing against a really so much bigger magicka pool. More stealth, more blade? Pointless, at level 50 all PGs are 100 in everything.

I like them both anyway, worst are imperial for me.

i read somewhere that the dunmer are the most fanatical and ferocious race on the battle feild and while being good at ranged,blade and destruction tey're downright murderers plus they're straight up kill you mentallity..And personaly i never played morrowind just oblivion,it was my first 360 game so you cant say "morrowind fanatic!".i'd say dunmer all the way.I just cnt see an altmer comng out on top over a dunmer.

I admit I'm a magicka nerd, so, usually I prefer playing altmer, but I respect dunmer as great people. In lore they are both important, in game all it's just about our playing style. Worst race for me remain imperials, in lore and ingame too.

Anyway I still have my idea: at level 1 usually yes, a dunmer beat the ass of an altmer, but at high levels an altmer mage with so much more magicka is just something a dunmer would have a difficult moment with. And don't say sneak, blade etc... a highest levels just all kind of races have most abilities higher than 80, so this is pointless (and remember security master in Morrowind was an Altmer, hehe).

Low levels it is the dunmer in high levels altmer would just do an area effect destruction spell with paralysis and have enough magicka to even cast it.
