Always a bigger fish..

Post » Sun Sep 05, 2010 8:47 pm

I was just wondering as to whether you guys think Bethesda will introduce us to some larger more frightening underwater encounters like the massive eel in oblivion. For example your exploring a cave when you come across a section that appears to be submerged. You willing jump into the water to get to the other side thinking a few eels is nothing! as you swim you get this feeling that you are not alone and then BAM! a giant fish of sorts tries to eat you!

Discuss...

I voted no. I don`t have anything against underwater fights but Skyrim is a cold place. You`d only expect smaller fish to be there. And maybe a whale.

Or maybe a shark? Don`t sharks like warm water? Also didn`t M`aiq say something about sharks in TES III: Morrowind?

I'm really hoping fishing is an activity like woodcutting, cooking, etc.

But this is the elder scrolls! why be limited to real life creatures! they can always invent a larger creature that thrives in cold water now can't they :P

"Weresharks: "I have only met one, but he was afraid of the water." (A reference to Daggerfall where there were many different types of werecreatures, while in Morrowind there weren't any until the introduction of Bloodmoon.) There is also a reference to a man thinking he is a wereshark in one of the Black Horse Courier Newspapers in Oblivion."

"they can always invent a larger creature that thrives in cold water now can't they "

Probably. I`m thinking of water/ice nymphs. Maybe it`s just because I`m naughty.

I voted yes, i loved the fight with the giant Slaughterfish in Oblivion. I always think about deep water and giant, horrific creatures living in the dark water. Felt odd to go into deep water and still only be attacked by wimpy slaughterfish. Maybe if there were huge fish to fight, maybe a squid like creature (kraken?) or some type of other creature.

What about the "midnight zone" in the darkest depths of the ocean, like the angler fish or those bio-luminescent jellyfish. (ok maybe jellyfish arent that scary, but it would be cool to see them)
There could always be hydrothermal vents in some of the caves to explain how they could grow large in cold temperatures. Maybe even a creature that is not solely aquatic, maybe some type of dragon that spends time in the water?

Water dragon sounds interesting, my preference would be a Kraken, something like Nessie (since its cold in Skyrim) or a Northern version of the Slaughterfish (a cross between a Cod and a Piranha..)

It would be nice and would make the waters a scary place to roam in.

I find it weird how often these "please add big scary underwater monsters" threads get made (there's not A LOT, but it seems like alot for this specific subject). But i love the idea... So the more threads there, are better.

I support the idea.

I voted no for two reasons.

One- I mostly am an archer, and archery doesn't work so well submerged...when I am not twanging my bow, I am slinging spells...also not water friendly.

Two- It's Skyrim, most water will probably be frozen...now...tunnels through frozen lakes...now that is something I wouldn't mind seeing occasionally...

Just because a place is cold, doesn't mean that all the water is frozen, ever been to canada? It's cold there, but the water there is not frozen 24/7

Fair enough, so I will take back that portion of my point but I still stand by the rest.

I guess you'd just have to learn to use a melee weapon

and some spells are water friendly... I just think it's just not fire

frost and electricity might be able to work underwater. I feel that the spell has to hit another medium for it to "explode"... so if you are already in the water, these spells should stay in their 'damage orb going towards target' form, but if you are shooting from the air to the water, the spells should take effect on the surface of the water.... Hey now...I still wouldn't mind seeing the ice tunnels into a lake...which I snuck into point 2...and it isn't just "learning to use a weapon" The bow is just part of the character...he/she doesn't use a blade because that isn't the character I am running...but if I am forced into a situation where my bow AND my spells (targeted ones at least) become significantly less effective...well that just seems like a situation I would have to avoid...or Fortify Speed through which is my preferred problem solver...

yeah i was being somewhat facetious about that... I was Kinda thinking "well if there are underwater monsters... he's screwed". I wasn't thinking "well this guy just needs to use melee weapons... DUH!!!!"

I hope for more monsters in general. Fighting the same things over and over is boring, especially when it doesn't require any tactics besides buttonsmashing.

While it would be great to add more detail to under water enviroments, the only practical use for undwarter battles is for Argonians, who can breath underwater. In oblivion, I spent 99.9% of the game on land.

As long as swimming is more fluid in Skyrim than Oblivion then YES! Imagine having to get to a chest or wreck sunk off the coast. The water is murky and you can only see a few metres in front of you. Suddenly you hear a wail like the sound of the monster from Cloverfield, and something slams you out of your path. You tumble and spin in the water, and right yourself just in time to see a vague shape disappearing back into the gloom.

Ooooooh.

No

Are you aware how slowly you could actually fight if you were really underwater. It was ridiculous in oblivion that you could swing a sword as fast underwater as you could out of it.
I would rather have a few hostile creatures and either no or very slow underwater combat so it would make stepping into water take you out of your comfort zone and feel threatened instead of overpowered for once. Water creatures should always have the natural advantage unless dovahkiin makes themselves a harpoon
