Is it always wrong to eat long pig?

Post » Thu Mar 03, 2016 7:15 pm

It's easy to say Always Wrong when you have a full stomach, but in the FO4 world food can be scarce and everyone is in survival mode.

Murdering to eat is always wrong, no doubt. But this post isn't about murdering; just the eating part. Why let a body go to waste?

When the primal survival instinct in our reptile brain kicks in, I think anything goes, in most cases. And yet, not all starving people turns to cannibalism. Dunno if that is due to reduced survival instinct, cultural things, moral / ethics or a combination, including other factors as well. Not really something I have been giving thought to before.

Would I do it if starving? Hmmm, I have been pretty hard pressed at times, but cannibalism never crossed my mind tho. Access to water and plant life ensured that. It would likely been another situation, if stranded after a plane crash in mountains or some such.

Always wrong.. Millions of starving people in this world and they aren't running around eating each other to stay alive.. Your mother didn't have to sit you down and tell you not to eat your friends when you were a child. Anyway.. fallout world seems to have plenty of food (even though they try to make it out like they don't) There's fricken brahmin being used as pack animals... pack animals in a world where everyone's starving? I don't think so.

Actually there are still societies that practice cannibalism. And I was talking about the eating part, not the murder.

Technically if you are Catholic and believe in transubstantiation you perform ritualistic cannibalism when you eat the host, so it's more common than you think. Arby's meat is actually made from the gout shavings of previous patrons.

[censored] don't get caught we me on an island, I'm killing, [censored], and eating your ass when we run out of food. Also in fallout the canabal perk is great, might invest in it for the new DLX since we now have to eat and stuff in survival

Without any proof to back that up, I'd say it remains a decision to the end. If there's people who can sit still while they are burning alive, I don't believe cannibalism is dependant on outer circumstance more than personal disposition.

I guess this is the kinda thing that would show what kind of person you are. Cannibalism may be a pure moral conflict, but then again one must ask themselves why they live at all. Et cetera - in a post-apocalyptic wasteland more than anything, your principles and integrity is all you have. That's why for example in the MM universe, those who've ever caved in and finally ate another human corpse are called "over the edge" - once you open certain doors, establish the nature of certain solutions as viable, you can never go back. It's not a thing you're doing, it's a complete trail of logic you are enabling for yourself. I am fully sharing this notion.

P.S.: The jerk thing to bring up, but food really isn't the problem in Fallout's Commonwealth, is it? Even if you cannot hunt, irradiated food in reality is not as (quite) fatal as it is often made out to be.

Always wrong, even to survive. People commit all manner of atrocities in the name of "survival", they're still atrocious.

Run out of food? How? Enter a building and boom preserved food! Settlements will give you food for favors. Hunting mirelurk meat is a fantastic way to gain food and then theres ragstag or plants that can be edible from the stem....and long pig? That never made sense to me basicaly we're from the primate family and we look nothing like a pig more likely it should be called long chimp..

depends on the situation. If there were absolutely no other source of food you would be surprised what you'd do to live. I know if I had a choice between cannibalism or withering away to death, I'm breaking out my grill.

I had no idea "long pig" was a euphemism for cannibalism. If we learned anything from Alive it's that it seems to be acceptable under extreme circumstances.

Going round killing people just to eat them is wrong.

But if the person attacked you and you had to kill them in self defense , even then only if you are absolutely life or death starving and there is no other within a reasonable distance.

In societies where cannibalism was practiced it was either eat your defeated enemies or eat your relatives as part of the funeral rites.

I don't think there has ever been a society that has viewed it as ok to kill and eat someone because you felt a bit peckish.

Thing is, food might be theoretically scarce in the Fallout world, but that's not the reality we are presented with. Truth is, food abounds, whether 200 year old Salisbury steak or radstag burgers finding an alternative is never difficult outside of headcanon.

So I guess my answer would be 'it's wrong if there is an alternative, and in the game there is always an alternative'.

Voted for the second option, but with something like the Andes flight desaster in mind, and not so much Fallout

Exactly. I tried to find societies that practice cannibalism today, and very few actually do. In Papua New Guinea, it's more of a ritual, but it's not strictly for self-preservation. Cannibalism seems to have always been a rare practice, unless someone else knows otherwise.

I think it's wrong in most circumstances, but for that team that crashed in the Andes in the 70s. They had no alternative. In that case, it was justifiable, and they didn't murder anyone to survive.
