Amata.

Won't, I think is the appropriate case.
The problem with Amata, is that Bethseduh took the easy way out, by not giving a female PC any equal possible romantic object of interest. There's Amata, good if you play a male PC, but a female PC... doesn't work so well in the social environment of the gameworld. The only male NPCs of the similar age to the PC in the chargen stages of the game are all the members of the Tunnel Snakes. No romantic interests there for a female player, and for a female player, Amata would be competition anyway. And guess what Bethesduh did, they made it so a female PC who removes the competition just before taking the G.O.A.T., cops a nice little nastygram of large scale negative Karma.

It's this comment here that I find problematic, though. You are saying that any character should have the "straight" option only and that's not what I agree with. If you're going to actively be able to have some kind of romantic plot line you have to have it Mass Effect style, where the PC of either six can pursue either six. I get that the boyfriend material is thin, if you want to play a female PC who is straight, but then the same argument holds for a male PC who is homosixual. I don't think it's because Bethesda didn't want to write a romantic storyline, I think they just covered their bases and din't engage.

What's with all of the fan-girl hate towards Amata? Jealous ladies?

Sounds more like jealousy towards male Lone Wanderers...?

Moira- Frag grenade in the pants
Moriarty- Enslaved
Bryan Wilks- Relocated to a shopping center near you
Dave- Deceased
Machete- Shoved into a dumpster
Mr. Buckingham- Scrapped for parts

Hmmm, Moriarty ....

It may be time to pay that dive of his a little visit.

Shouldn't Dave be 'Overthrown and Deceased'?
Moira deserves something a byte more spectacular that a mere frag grenade in the pants. A live Nuka Grenade placed in her pants is an acceptable minimum.

I don't think they could be romanticaly involved. I think I read somewhere that if you've been around someone since an early age, you aren't able to be involved with them, hence why you aren't interested in your sister, brother, mother, or father. And since Amata has been around the LW since a really young age (in Baby Steps James says,"Come on, let's go see your friend Amata.") I don't think they could get involved.

It's called the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westermarck_effect#Westermarck_effect, and while it's rather common, it's not that absolute. In particular, it doesn't come up very often in fiction, as opposed to real life.

She played a large enough role for my tastes.

Spoiler
She is the lucky recipient of Enclave plasma fire.

I tell you, she looks great in Enclave officer uniform :hubbahubba:

It isn't a tit-for-tat topic, but it has significantly deviated from the question that the OP asked.

Im so sorry for pointing out the obvious, but ill join in, cause theres a argumentative feel in the air -yawn-

Amata is there only as "comic relief" as for the male men, they instantly are like "do we get to have six with her?" which is the reason the wisenhimers at Bethesda didn't insert that in (loving you J.E Sawyer). Anyway, my self, hetrosixual, feels someone turned off by a Vault suit...what ever happened to a simple dress? I mean, why a skimpy jumpsuit?

....what?

Amata isn't comic relief at all. I find her ridiculously serious and a little emo as a 16 year old. Any joke you try to make with her falls flat.

The role she carries is pretty much perfect, though. She doesn't have major bearing on the plot but serves as a familial tie to the past. Her presence is something most can relate to, because I am sure that most of us had childhood friends that were close for many, many years, but then other things in life pop up that end up separating you. It doesn't end your friendship, but change it.

Also, as a het male, I am sure you have plenty to look at when it comes to video game women, Infantry :P

J.E Sawyer works for Obsidian. I believe it's Todd Howard you're thinking about.

There's too many de-railing posts here for me to reply to the conversation, so I'll just give my two cents on what I think about Amata.

I think Amata was created just to be the main character's only true friend in the entire wasteland and I'm fine with that. I'm glad they didn't try to turn it into a romance thing, but for players who wanted that they at least gave you the option to flirt with Amata on occassions regardless of your character's gender, though as a female character she tends to reject you, which I think is fine because it adds realism to the character. As much as I support homosixuals being treated equally we all know that not everyone in this world is attracted to people of the same gender, and if you were gay and were to tell your best same-gender friend that you were attracted to them chances are they would feel uncomfortable and blow it off. But I digress.

Amata may not have had a major part in fighting the Enclave or helping the Brotherhood of Steel, but she represented the normal homelife your character had before exiting the vault and she is the only person who will ever truely care about your well being besides your father. Both Amata and your Father will end up vanishing from your life for different reasons so it's supposed to give a feeling of sadness and loss, but how you handle the loss is supposed to shape out if you're a good or evil character, especially when you return to Vault 101 and have a choice of either helping your best friend one last time or ruining the entire Vault out of revenge.

Also for those who say female characters don't have a choice of romance, I think Butch and Mister Burke can qualify as that. If you play a female character and recruit Butch as a companion he will flirt with you and can be treated as a boyfriend (not to mention I think he's one of the more hotter young male NPCs), and if you use the Black Widow perk on Mister Burke and convience him not to hurt Megaton he will start writing your character love letters so in a way you could use him as a boyfriend too.

-whistling- Well, as you said in the third sentence, Frank Burns in M*A*S*H never actually took the jokes his bunk-mates did on him to heart, it would fall flat, but in the end, he was a comic relief. The role she bares is perfect, transparent to me, yes, but perfect, she woulda made a great companion....

And yes, i do skirt......

You're all assuming that everyone who plays a male PC is straight. Well, or that everyone must be straight, and forcing the PC into a heterosixual relationship is even offensive to me, and I'm het.

Well most people unfortunately don't consider that sadly.

I hate Amata. She creeped me out the first time I saw her.

I am polite to her while in the vault to get it over with but once it comes to Escape! I kill the Overseer and tell her he was a murderer and deserved it.

I always destroy the vault.
I would never save that sick experiment.

Ungrateful fraghead.
Her father and the head guard were going to beat her to death and she gets all upset when I kill them.

I always kill her if I see her.

Next time I will be as mean as possible to her.

I am very glad she was not involved more in the story. What Amata there is is too much already.

If there was no Amata, it would be better.
