Amata.

Question: Amata is so heavily involved early in the story, why does she not play a larger role later? This is probably my only gripe with the story.

She becomes the Overseer of Vault 101 and like the Overseer of Vault 13 said to the Vault Dweller "you'll have to leave."

Yet another thing they took from the Originals :user:

Being ringleader of the rebels of Vault 101, was merely a temporary work assignment for Amata immediately prior to the emergency evacuation and resultant permanent depopulated closure of Vault 101 due to a major catastrophic water systems failure.
Last I saw of her, she was being attacked by 4 Giant Albino Radscorpions.

Because Bethesda writers can't or won't write romance stories, and Amata would be the obvious choice for the (at least, the male) player character so ... they kinda made sure she wasn't involved, no matter what you do.

Won't, I think is the appropriate case.
The problem with Amata, is that Bethseduh took the easy way out, by not giving a female PC any equal possible romantic object of interest. There's Amata, good if you play a male PC, but a female PC... doesn't work so well in the social environment of the gameworld. The only male NPCs of the similar age to the PC in the chargen stages of the game are all the members of the Tunnel Snakes. No romantic interests there for a female player, and for a female player, Amata would be competition anyway. And guess what Bethesduh did, they made it so a female PC who removes the competition just before taking the G.O.A.T., cops a nice little nastygram of large scale negative Karma.

They could have done what Lionhead did with Fable III, and make Amata a male if you're a female character (Amatt :P), if they wanted to add in a romantic twist to the story. But LW already has Sentinel Lyons at the end as a potential love interest, so yeah.

Her role is somewhat prominent, it's just that LW won't see her again.

The last I saw of Amata
Spoiler
Her head was flying down a corridor. "Exile me after I solve all your problems will ya?" BOOM!!. Then I hunted and killed everyone else in the vault. Ungrateful chumps.

I just felt like the whole mission was a waste of time when she did thet.

Right...
Sure....

Goody two shoes female PC and Sentinel Lyons.
I don't see that being allowed to work. Not under the ESRB.

Evil female PC and Sentinel Lyons.
Lyons becomes microwaved Cram in a can.

Lyons hints it at one point when she says something along the lines of wishing they had more time to spend together. As for female LW, Im sure they could have fitted in a male character in there somewhere for her to have a relationship with, if it was the intention.

I doubt ESRB minds. If they allow gay marriages in Sims to fly with a T rating, and complete nudity in Rockstar games, they won't mind a little kiss or two in Fallout. Bethesda purposely didn't intend LW to have any romantic interests.

Also, evil LW =/= flippin' mental LW

I guess Fallout is just not the place for romance plots. I mean, besides the one night stands in NV we've had only Miria/Dave in Fallout 2 and even they were shotgun weddings.

You're all assuming that everyone who plays a male PC is straight. Well, or that everyone must be straight, and forcing the PC into a heterosixual relationship is even offensive to me, and I'm het.

I actually, when I started this thread, was hoping for a more general discussion of Amata. I wish she was involved in missions and such. As far as romance is concerned, I really don't care.

Come on old sport, this is the one time I would definately call it more a "homage" rather than a straight rip-off.

I think the reason that they tie Amata's storyline off is her role as the PC's best friend early on - sever that tie, and there is nothing holding the Wanderer to the vault.

She does play a more subtle role. The Wanderer will hallucinate about her in Vault 106, so it gives an idea about what s/he is thinking about while out in the wastes. Her GOAT indicates she's on the "leadership" track, too, which isn't all that useful outside the Vault, at least in my opinion.

She played a large enough role for my tastes.

Actually, no, I don't - and most of you are missing my point.

Amata started out as a childhood friend of the character. One of the typical plots revolving around such, especially - but not always - when the two kids are of opposing sixes, is that they develop their friendship into a full-blown romantic relationship (TVTropes codifies it as "http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VictoriousChildhoodFriend"). If Bethesda wouldn't get rid of her as soon as the main game starts, and didn't include such a plot, they'd meet with much more player complaining than the rather tame "I wish she would play a role in the main quest."

It's, I guess, more than implied that Amata is supposed to be the "best" friend, but at the same time they tried to emphasize that there are fewer kids around in general, and that you're all sorta friends with everyone your age, which is demonstrated by the birthday party. Meh.

The problem I have with the birthday party sequence, is that you are actively prevented from playing it against Amata. As a female character, any approaches to Paul Hannon Jr. go to a deadend thanks to Butch. Also, as a female character, there is no way to reduce any possible romantic competition at the party by agreeing with Butch's assessment on what Amata set up.

I always saw Amanda as a symbol of your childhood and your life in the vault. Even if you want her, you can't get her back, because she will force you to leave the vault. But, once you re-enter the vault to speak with her, it should be apparent to you that the vault isn't somewhere where you'd want to spend the rest of your life anyway.

Kind of a lost innocence thing.

As Skirt said in a earlier post, you hallucinate about her in 106, and you also hallucinate about her in Point Lookout, near the end of Local Flavor.

Any deeper or continuing personal attachment between the two of you would run counter to the whole idea of the story in which you make yourself into a Jesus-esq martyr in the end. . .and yes I'm ignoring the awful beyond the credits ending of Broken Steel

What's with all of the fan-girl hate towards Amata? Jealous ladies? :P
