Well at least I know that I am not the only one that is completely pissed off right now.

Bethesda pulled a bait and switch. Many of us have data caps on our internet so we like to purchase physical copies of games to avoid massive overage fees. For instance my data costs US$2.00/GB.

Why do I bring this up? Because the physical disk (Yes, singular. One disk) only contains a fraction of the game so I now have to download 25GB minimum at a cost of $50.00 so that now the game is costing me $110.00.

Nowhere in the product description does it say that you are purchasing an 'empty' disk.

DAMIT Bethesda, If you don't want to sell hard copies DON'T!

From this very Forum: PC Requirements

Nowhere does it say that we have to download the game if we purchase a physical copy.

Yea but Bethesda let us know that it would require a Steam download before the game came out. svcks but it's not like they obfuscated that information in anyway.

I read the product description carefully and nowhere does it say that even though I have purchased a hard copy I would still have to download 80% of the game. So, intentional or not, I say that they obfuscated the information.

Here's the thing - It does not matter what you know. It does not matter what I know. Nowhere on the packaging does it state that a download will be required. It simply says a free steam account will be needed to activate the game. It is very nearly false advertising and if someone bought the game who has never dealt with a steam game before, then they have every right to be annoyed.

I was expecting some kind of download, but not 80% of the game.

Not everyone was following Bethesda's every announcement about the game, indeed I was avoiding all the pre-game information to avoid spoilers etc.

People really need to do more research before purchasing games these days. Especially those folks with slow/metered internet. It's not just Fallout, it's the games with huge day one patches and other issues. Don't pre-order or buy on day one!

Exactly my point. I am considering invoicing Bethesda for my data usage.

Wave of the future, actually, the now. Everything is going digital. Just read an article that said physical PC copies accounted for a massive 6% of sales. And are you trying to tell me you have a cap of less than 40GB's? Never heard of that, unless you choose something like that to save money. All major access providers with caps set them around 300GB's. They use an amount that will have no impact on 95% of their customers. Or are you a cord cutter that streams everything and svcks up tons of bandwidth?

Well then, then sue or ask for a refund. Your getting nowhere posting on a board mostly frequented by players and rarely if at all by people at Bethesda/Zenimax. Tweet Pete Hines, he seems to respond pretty regularly to people if they have questions.

What research could anyone one do other than read the product description. Yes I pre-ordered the game, but I knew that I would purchase it regardless of the reviews.

But if I had known that I would still have to download the game I would have just bought the thing on Steam and would have been playing on the first day of release.

Not in Alaska, or many rural regions of the US. Many countries have it even worse than we do in AK.

My problem is not with downloading it, it is the fact that I purchased a physical copy expecting to not have to download it.

If I had known that I would have to download the friggen thing I could have rationed my data usage in preparation.

I am venting my frustration in the only place that a Bethesda representative may actually read it.

And maybe someone that is considering purchasing the physical copy to avoid data usage may read it and be warned.

This will likely be the way it is done now. I read that MGSV only had a steam installer on the dvd? Now that is pretty funny. If the PC gaming industry pushed to BluRay this wouldn't have been a problem. But the dependance on Steam and getting digital downloads has taken over. The issue some are facing is now that same thing they wanted, is working against them if they have slow/capped internet. I'd be curious to see if there is any accountability to note it on the packaging but I would doubt it. Maybe see if any MGSV users got anything done?

I mean post-release research. People need to make informed purchases, and pre-ordering is the antithesis of an informed purchase. All it takes is a bit of delayed gratification.

You know how many times I've been burned in recent years by a game purchase? Zero. But I never pre-order and rarely buy on day one. Games like Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed Unity, Destiny, etc are much better when purchased knowing exactly what you're getting rather than the hype-fueled expectations that pre-ordering sets in a buyer's mind.

No kidding Sherlock. That is why games like The Witcher 3 and Metro 2033 shipped with multiple disks in the box. This is why I game on a PC primarily.

I do not actually believe that it would accomplish any more than make me feel marginally better.

Mark my words though, this will become the next great game controversy on the interwebz.

It will continue to happen until a change is made by the industry. It doesn't just fall on publishers

Well if the DVD Boxed version without question does not clearly state that you will need to download well over 20GB of the game Beth are in violation of some form of advertising laws dependant on which country you live in.

As to Data Allowance many places in the World even in countries classed as part of the Digital Explosion there are people who still use dial up because that's all they can get. I spent over 5 years on Mobile broadband and 20GB+ would have taken 3 months of data allowance to download, if the product is sold as a DVD Version is should damn well have all the DVD's to install the game. The only download should be any patches and I for one (and others) still believe that Game Updates via Steam should be by 'By Choice' not "You Must Have Them" so we can balance Data usage. There will never be a World where everyone has 1000GB per month with faster than ADSL speeds and those people still have the right to be considered by Beth, not ignored. "Oh you have limited Internet do you?" Touch Luck we don't waste our money providing DVD's for the money you paid us, not when we can rake in the $'s by doing it all via 80% download or 100% by Steam, So sorry about that, Not.

Like I said, Bethesda is far from the first company to do this and will not be the last. I'm assuming you don't dabble in marketing law? K. But really, I'm sure it is legal for them to do that, just as it was for MGSV to come with 8.75mb Steam installer and nothing else, or Final Fantasy XIV which also only contained a Steam installer.

I don't understand why the computer game industry hasn't moved to Blu-rays yet. We had to purchase CD-ROM readers when games became too large for floppy disks and we had to purchase DVD readers when CD-ROMs were no longer big enough. Although seriously the transition from 1.44 MB to 600 MB is far greater than the transition from 600 MB to 4700 MB. It would take about 417 floppy disks to fill one CD-ROM while only about 8 CD-ROMs to fill a DVD.

If Bethesda put down Blu-ray reader or Steam download as a requirement, then it would set a precedent for other computer game companies to do the same. It has been almost 10 years since the Blu-ray first came out and about time that we all transition towards it.

Got the pip boy and was told the reason that Bethesda didnt include the game is to stop pirates who woud use them in an illegal manner so seems like more of a crime fighting step than anything else.
