Ambient Music

Post » Fri Mar 04, 2011 9:50 pm

So I'm not going to pour through hundreds of topics to find out if this has been discussed or not, so I apologize if it has, but has it been discussed/confirmed whether or not we'll be hearing ambient music as we trek around the world of Skyrim?

Personally, I felt the ambient music really added character to previous games, and created more immersion for me. I can see how some people might find it annoying, but I've never found it to be an overwhelming feature. It's especially useful when your under attack from creatures, but perhaps takes away from some of the surprise of an enemy locating you.

What are your thoughts on ambient music, and do you think it'll be in again?

I don't recall it being mentioned, but I'm totally certain that it will be in.

I mean, why wouldn't it be? Ambient music is a staple these days....

^^ this

tbh I can't see why it wouldn't - TES has always had awesome music imo. I still hear the sounds and music of the swamp/water areas near seyda neen. Not to mention the awesome dust storms. I'm sure we'll have something suitably coldly arctic yet hot-blooded for Skyrim.

Sound is one of the things I really appreciate, so between the music and the various noises (critters, background, as well as interactions like simple boxes, battle noises etc) I'm sure that they'll deliver, based on previous games.

Yes.

However I hope they add more regional ambient music, and not just the same five 2 minute songs and even take that a step further by having in game ambient music sources like bards, lute players etc etc.

And who ever says you can't edit and qoute on iPod is doing it wrong :P

People who really hate ambient music can always turn it off in the options menu. I love ambient music though, it really felt great to hear such music when walking through the lands of oblivion.

Hopefully no magic danger-music detection system that ruins ambiant music and surprise. But I realise it's highly improbable that my hopes will be rewarded.

It would be nice if music was suited more for the situation. Instead of the combat music instantly playing for that mudcrab that is a mile away, it would play only when you are facing a high level enemy or dragon, or something like that.

That should not start until

a) the enemy is in your vision
b.) the enemy has just hit you or
c) the enemy has just let out a loud battle cry

For A, the existing requirement plus, the enemy would have to be intending to attack you. Not just be your enemy.

So I don't want music to cut in when an enemy is completely unaware that I'm there, but it's in my view.

Sure I love the music in Oblivion and the music mods for it. But I dotn like to hear it ALL the time. I do like a little peace and quiet ya know, for hunting and the like.

Exactly, I wish everyone had played the ORIGINAL dungeon siege, sure that game was linear, but the music was so good and so perfect for the scenery that when I engaged the enemy it didn't feel necessary for the music to suddenly switch to "action mode"

Absolutely. I would, however, much prefer if each region had a given theme of its own that would play on the background.

I'd love it if those would vary with general ambience music, keeping things fresh, but, obviously, thematic. I really enjoy the idea of having the theme song of a region kick in whenever I enter it. It gives it so much character. Just take a look at ANY Zelda settlement. I know there are many examples, but I always find it interesting how Zelda is a sort of eastern equivalent to Elder Scrolls gameplay philosophy.
