Chapter 17
Vertibird Hope
December 23rd, 2277
1934 Hours
The ride back was a dreadful one, as Adam refused to speak. Even if White was not his favorite, all of his troops were his family. He hasn’t had a loss in the family since Clancy, and that too wasn’t far away. It seems he could never get a break. In less than one month he has suffered many casualties for his squad.
He did not even bother to ask the new rook her name. Though Griffin couldn’t pass up a chance to. “So, what’s your name, show-off?” she teased. Trying to ease the tension of the loss of another squad mate. While White was not with them for long, it hurt like hell to the morale.
The rookie laughed and smiled at Griffin. “Private Forge, but you can call me ‘show-off’ if you really desire.” Her soft white skin was beautiful in the light in the Vertibird. Griffin softly chuckled, and looked at Simpson. She knew this annoyed her.
Simpson rolled her eyes and looked away, annoyed that a new, beautiful female was added to the squad. For obvious reasons, she would have preferred if White was still alive. She moved over to Adams and put her hand on his shoulder, asking if he was alright. Adams didn’t respond, simply watched as the endless waves of sand move beneath the Vertibird.
“Vertibird Hope to Outpost Eden, we’re enroute with survivors of Outpost AR-04. Requesting permission to land, over.” The pilot nodded at the co-pilot as they flicked a few switches.
A loud, static voice boomed back. “Outpost Eden to Vertibird Hope, clearance granted. Landing pad C1 is awaiting you. Winds are negligible. Safe landing, over.”
The pilot smiled and replied his thanks. They slowly began to hover down towards the landing platform, while Forge looked at Jackson with curiosity. Adams sighed, and began to stand up when Hope landed with a loud thud, and the hatch popped open.
Adams slowly walked out in his tan uniform, while Lieutenant Pebbles was waiting for him. Pebbles stood there with his tan officer uniform in the dark. His face visibly annoyed and angry. Pebbles spit on the ground and walked over to the landing pad.
“Sergeant, what the hell were you thinking?” barked Pebbles sharply. Adams ignored him and moved forward. Pebbles quickly got into Adams face.
“I asked you a question, Sergeant, don’t make me ask again.” He growled. Adams stared into Pebbles eyes, and moved forward, bumping shoulders with Pebbles.
Pebbles stared at Adams, and softly whispered, “You just made the biggest mistake of your life, Phil Adams…”
Adams continued to move through the halls, bumping shoulders with anyone in his way. Simpson ran over to him. “Sergeant, hey, slow down!” she called out. Adams ignored her, and moved off towards Whites room. He went over to the door, which was locked. Staring at the lock, he became enraged and kicked the door down. Two nearby soldiers stopped and stared at this, when Simpson gave them both cold looks, they quickly went back to their jobs.
“God DAMNIT!” shouted Adam, he threw a punch at the wall and dented it, causing his hand to bleed. Simpson moved towards Adams, and grabbed his hand. She held it softly in her gentle and soft hands. The feeling of a woman’s touch helped sooth Adam’s feelings.
“Sarge, he did it for us. We can’t let his sacrifice go to vain.” She whispered softly to him.
Adams looked at Simpson for a moment. Something… weird, was going on here. He was angry, but looking at Simpson while she held his hand made his heart pound faster and harder. He looked softly into her eyes. She slowly moved closer to him.
“I’m here for you…” she said softly and her body was close to his. He slowly put his hand on her backside, and pulled her a little bit closer.
Before they could get any farther, two nearby troopers in Power Armor marched in; Simpson quickly jumped back and stared at them. Lieutenant Pebbles pushed his way past them.
“Staff Sergeant Phil Adams, you’re under arrest for detonating a nuclear device without authorization in a civilian and friendly zone.” Pebbles nodded to the troopers. They raised their Laser rifles, and aimed at Adams.
“What the hell is this?” barked Simpson. One trooper grabbed her and lured her out of the roof, and pushed her away, then returned to the room.
“Turn around, and put your hands behind your back.” Ordered one of the troopers. Adams glared at Pebbles with fire in his eyes. The other trooper came over and grabbed Adams by the shoulder and forced him to turn around.
They put cuffs on him, and pushed him forward. The second trooper put his Laser Rifle against Adams back side to enforce the point that he’ll have to follow them, or risk being shot. Simpson stood there and watched dumbstruck.
“Don’t worry, Sarge. I’ll get the others.”
Pebbles growled at her. “Private, go back to your quarters.”
She strolled off and gave Pebbles the finger. He ignored her and continued to lead them to a detention cell. Many soldiers stood up and watched as a hero of their kind was being cuffed and lead away. Some stared, confused, while others quickly looked away and shook their head.
Whispers throughout the hall could be heard. Two soldiers quickly turned their backs to the wall to make room while watching Adams being led by gunpoint.
They made their way to a detention cell, and forced Adams into it. Pebbles looked down at Adams with disgust. “You’re in one hell of a mess, Sergeant.” He said Sergeant with extra force, signaling that the rank of Staff Sergeant may no longer be Adams.
John Henry Eden cut in. “Sergeant, I’m very disappointed in you. Using of such weapons in this day and age, with how traumatized the world is costly. Many civilians now fear us thinking we’re just here to level their cities, while many soldiers were left behind in the city and could not escape the blast. The deaths of over fifty confirmed soldier’s is on your hands.”
Adams looked down, and softly mumbled to himself.
“As of this hour, you’re off the assault force, no longer Echo Squads leader, and detained until further notice by me or President Eden.”
Sighing, Pebbles looked down at Adams. “You did a very stupid move, Sergeant. Costing over fifty lives of soldiers, countless civilians, and even one of your own squad members. I bet he’s spitting down at a piece of crap commander you are from heaven.”
This enraged Adams, he quickly stood up and charged at Pebbles. A nearby soldier stepped in the way and slammed his fist in Adams face, dislocating his jaw and multiple teeth from the sheer impact. Adam fell to the floor. Pebbles frowned, shook his head, and left.
Adams began to yell out in pain, his jaw hurt like hell. The soldiers tossed a few stimpacks towards him, and walked out of the cell, locking the door.
He rolled over on his back, yelling out in pain, reaching for the stimpacks. Today possibly couldn’t get any worse, though Adams.
