Next chapter is up! I'm unsure if people really do like reading this story or if they're just doing it because it gets updated every day and they feel like they have to. Oh well. The story is probably going to end in a few chapters from now.
Chapter 21
Vault 118
January 5th, 2278
1242 Hours
Adams stood there for a moment, with a chill running down his spine.
"Sir, we need to keep moving?" whispered James quietly.
Sighing softly and slowly, Adams nodded. "Into the vault, now." He ordered. The two teams began their slow trek through the corridors of the old Vault. The pure steel walls glimmered with the reflection of the flashlights. Soft pinging noises could be heard around the halls. Adams raised his hand in a fist to signal the squad to stop.
They waited in the dim light; the only thing anyone could hear was the soft, gentle sounds behind the nearby door. The door opened, and Adams raised his LRE1 "Lava" Rifle to his shoulder and peered down the sights. A Robo-Brain, a large, moving robot on tracks with a real brain in a half-bowl on its head that has a soft feminine voice.
"Welcome, residents! You are 20-" Before the machine could finish fired off a shot towards the machine's brain, destroying it.
"These things are under Eden's control. Don't think they're harmless and turn your back towards them." He barked.
They moved slowly towards the main doorway, and opened it. Two hallways lead towards different locations. Adams signaled Omega to go to one way while Echo went another. They moved slowly, watching the main room where a few pre-war citizens lay dead in their pods, while two had there's open for some reason.
Adams peered around the corner and waited for a moment.
"Eyes sharp." He mumbled. Griffin and Simpson nodded.
Moving quietly, they found a large room full of equipment. The speakers turned on.
"Treason is punishable by death, you know." Growled an angry voice.
"Eden?" whispered James.
Griffin and James moved towards two nearby rooms. When they entered the room, the door slammed shut behind them, locked. Adams' cursed and rushed over to it, trying to open it. He looked behind him, while the other door locked him and his squad in the large room. Two large TV's turned on, one showing Griffin and James trapped, the other Omega squad locked in a room, too.
"And if necessary, I will be the one to execute that order." Replied Eden.
The Tv with Omega squad enlarged, and heard as the audio turned on.
"Sarge, where the hell are we?"
"No idea, Private."
A weird, svcking noise was heard. It took Adams a moment to realize it was the air filtering system svcking out the air in the room. Omega squad began to bang on the door.
"Get us out! What t--?" one Private fell to the floor, oxygen deprived.
Slowly, one by one, the other three remaining soldiers quickly dropped to the floor, and did not move.
Adams watched in horror, and the video screen turned off. Then the video of Griffin and James enlarged.
"Damnit, Eden, you're insane!" cried out Simpson. They watched as the video show the room decompressing the air from Griffin and James as well. They banged on the door, and Adams tried to shoot at it to burst through it. It wouldn't budge.
Adams looked around as best he could, and found a nearby room. Rushing in, he found Eden's mainframe.
"I have you now, you bastard!" shouted Adams. He ran over, and tied a few EMP bombs on the large computer.
"You will NOT take this country from me!" shouted Eden enraged. He locked all the doors in the vault, and began to overload the reactor. Adam ran back, and blew the EMP bomb, which overloaded Eden's control on the doors.
James and Griffin burst through the door, gasping for air, and falling to the floor. They were weak, and Jackson and Simpson picked them up, while Forge moved down the hallway retracing their steps. They quickly ran as fast as they could through the halls, hearing the loud, deafening sound of the reactor overloading. It wailed as the engines pumped faster and faster.
They reached the door, and they rushed through it. When they passed, Adams slammed the controls down to activate the door to close. The metal screeched as it grinded against one another and slowly rolled into place.
Running up the stairs, they were almost at the door of the Garage when they remembered something.
"The sandstorm?" whispered Forge.
Adams stood there for a moment, and cursed. He kicked the door down to a blizzard of sand flying everywhere with a deafening screech of wind. He couldn't see anything in front of him outside, but he could hear the reactor beginning to reach critical.
"Move your asses!" he shouted. They rushed through the door, and ran outside into the hellfire of sand. Moving sluggishly through the sand, they tried their best to stay atop of the sand. If they sat down, the sand would engulf them and drown them.
Adams tried his best to stay above the sand.
He couldn't see a thing, and didn't know if everyone was okay. Suddenly, he heard a large explosion. It rocked the ground, and made him fall down. He struggled to stand up, but just gave up.
Laying face down in the sand, he awaited his death. This mission was successful, at the cost of both teams and a Vertibird. What a failure he was?
When all hope was almost gone, the sand lightened up a large amount. Within a few more seconds, the sandstorm passed. He struggled to stand up, and looked around. Everyone else was slowly standing up.
"We made it? we made it!" cheered James. Forge went over and gave him a high-five. Jackson giggled, and Griffin and Simpson cleaned off their armor.
Adams waited a minute, cleaning things up, when he heard in the distance a familiar sound of blades twirling quickly through the air.
"This is Vertibird Phoenix to Captain Adams, do you read, sir?" crackled the radio.
Smiling, Adams replied. "Yes. We're here. Come pick us up."
"On our way, sir. ETA one minute. Also, we have good news, sir. Pararescue teams arrived at Hope's crash site and were able to extract both of them in time. They're okay, sir."
Adams smiled and took one last deep breath. Maybe it all wasn't wasted today?
