America's Last Hope

Ah, well, don't forget that Eden first orginally was designed to monitor the nearby vaults, including Vault 112, which means that he was directly linked to it and could relay sensor data and upload things. Another thing is Vault 112 had only one large area for the people to live in (due to it being a reality program thing), the rest was dedicated to equipment. So all that equipment, servers, and such were highly advanced and probably had a lot of storage, room, and space for downloads from Eden. Especially if he purged out Tranqility lane and the other programs and made room. After all, he was a just a old ZAX unit, while Vault 112 was highly advanced.

It may not be sound proof, but hey, it's better than just saying he took off into space or something. xD

Well, some of you wanted more detail, so I hope this chapter doesn't disappoint. Thankfully still providing all my readers with one chapter a day. Hope you all enjoy!

Chapter 20
Vertibird Hope
January 5th, 2278
1230 Hours

The barren wasteland of desert stretched on for miles of unending waves full of sand, death, and bones. Hope slightly jolted up and down from the winds. Adam left his eyes closed, trying to get some rest. The past few days have been tiring.

He and his followers worked endlessly for days to build up Outpost Redemption. With the supplies they brought along, and some they managed to find nearby from abandoned shacks, they were able to make the base almost as large as Outpost Eden, though minus the highly advanced tech style of equipment.

There were sadly two incidents when building the command post tower on a large hill. Two of the support beams gave way and the building tumbled, possibly due to rust from the old metal used to create it. When it gave way, one worker was trapped inside and fell to his death.

Another incident was a fueling accident when he walked too close to a fueling line, which gave way and was ignited by the sun's intense heat, incinerating the soldier in a ball of flame.

Thankfully, however, six more soldiers ran from Outpost Eden to join the Outcasts by escaping their patrol during the night and making the long run to Shackletown, when a nearby patrol spotted them and brought them back to the outpost.

Adams sighed; they were closing in on their location, Smith and Casey's Garage. Which was the location of Vault 118, where Eden remained. Vertibird Hope and Vertibird Phoenix flew in a two-bird formation side by side. Echo Squad and Omega Squad were going to enter together and split up inside the vault. First to find Eden is to radio it in, and take the machine down with special EMP charges. If however, Eden was still alive, they were ordered to blow the vault to hell.

"Hope, we have eyes on the LZ." Crackled the radio. Lt. Den smiled and looked down at the location.

"Alright ladies, we're here."

James groaned. "I seriously hate that guy." He mumbled. Forge punched him on the shoulder and laughed.

"I heard that, [censored]." Retorted Lt. Den.

Griffin looked at Jackson as he was experimenting with his Plasma Rifle.

"What the hell are you doing? Don't touch the plasma cham-" before she could finish, a shot went off and fired into the side of the Vertibird, melting part of the seat. This woke Adams up, a made Lt. Den turn his head around, extremely annoyed. Jackson softly giggled to himself.

"You kids keep this crap up, and I'm turning this thing around back home."

"Sorry mom." Coughed James as he rolled his eyes.

The Vertibirds began their decent and slowly blew sand in all directions as they lowered. A loud thud was heard as they touched down.

"Thanks for flying on 'Get Out Of My 'Bird' Airlines. Now get out." Barked Den as the co-pilot got up and began to inspect the damage of the plasma shot.

They all got out of their seats and slowly disembarked. Omega Squad came over and nodded to Adams.

"What now, sir?" inquired their Sergeant.

Adams was about to reply when something caught his eye far off in the distance. He stared at it, but couldn't figure out what it was.

"Griffin, scope that out." He remarked, pointing towards it. She picked up her binoculars and zoomed in.

She looked only for a moment before muttered a curse word. Adam grabbed them from her and looked through them. He saw a large, endless wall of sand blowing towards them.

"[censored]." He cursed. Adams quickly turned his radio on. "Hope, Phoenix, get your asses out of here, NOW! We have a sandstorm, a hell of a large one, coming in from the south, fast."

"Aw man." Replied Phoenix. Both Vertibirds began to fire up their rutters and quickly tried to get airborne as quickly as they could. Phoenix took off before Hope, and turned north to the base.

"Alright, get your asses inside, now!" barked Adams. Sandstorms normally weren't a bad thing. But here, in the wasteland, they were a different type of hell. Entire squads were covered alive in sand and buried, while Vertibirds were thrashed out of the sky and plummeted to the ground from the amount of force in the sandstorms.

They quickly pushed into the door, and ran past all the dead mole rats, struggling to get underground as quick as possible.

"Where's the stairs?" cried out one of Omega's squad. Griffin punched a nearby button, causing the floor to open up and show a stairs.

"Move your asses." Barked Adams as they quickly shuffled down the stairs and found Vault 118's doors.

Adams walked over to the terminal, and activated it. The doors screeched a horrifying loud noise of metal grinding against metal, causing two recruits to cover their ears. The door slid open, and a darkness was in front of them. Griffin sighed, and looked at Adams.

"Captain, do you come in, sir? This is Hope." crackled the radio.

"Adams here."

"Sir, we can't come and pick you up anytime soon. The storm is stronger than we first thought. We'll be back as soon as it passes."

Adams sighed and understood, this kind of thing happens a lot. "Be safe."

"Yes, sir. One last thi-"

His co-pilot cut him off. "Den, the proximity warning is going off."

"The hell do you mean? There's nothing near us. Wait, [censored], the sandstorm is engulfing us." A loud thud and crackle could be heard over the radio.

"God damnit, rear stabilization tracks are offline, rutter two is coughing it up. Port cleaning system offline. Intake is taking in a crapload of sand."

"Get us to land!" shouted Den.

"It's no use! Rutter two is down!?" the radio made a loud crackle of static. "Heading 223 oh nin?? --ere losing altitu--? --ay day! I repeat, Hope is go--?" the radio was full of static now.

Simpson looked at Adams as he listened in horror to the radio. The last thing they heard from Hope was a loud, deafening, all too familiar sound of a Vertibird crashing into the ground, and then exploding.

Next chapter is up! I'm unsure if people really do like reading this story or if they're just doing it because it gets updated every day and they feel like they have to. Oh well. The story is probably going to end in a few chapters from now.

Chapter 21
Vault 118
January 5th, 2278
1242 Hours

Adams stood there for a moment, with a chill running down his spine.

"Sir, we need to keep moving?" whispered James quietly.

Sighing softly and slowly, Adams nodded. "Into the vault, now." He ordered. The two teams began their slow trek through the corridors of the old Vault. The pure steel walls glimmered with the reflection of the flashlights. Soft pinging noises could be heard around the halls. Adams raised his hand in a fist to signal the squad to stop.

They waited in the dim light; the only thing anyone could hear was the soft, gentle sounds behind the nearby door. The door opened, and Adams raised his LRE1 "Lava" Rifle to his shoulder and peered down the sights. A Robo-Brain, a large, moving robot on tracks with a real brain in a half-bowl on its head that has a soft feminine voice.

"Welcome, residents! You are 20-" Before the machine could finish fired off a shot towards the machine's brain, destroying it.

"These things are under Eden's control. Don't think they're harmless and turn your back towards them." He barked.

They moved slowly towards the main doorway, and opened it. Two hallways lead towards different locations. Adams signaled Omega to go to one way while Echo went another. They moved slowly, watching the main room where a few pre-war citizens lay dead in their pods, while two had there's open for some reason.

Adams peered around the corner and waited for a moment.

"Eyes sharp." He mumbled. Griffin and Simpson nodded.

Moving quietly, they found a large room full of equipment. The speakers turned on.

"Treason is punishable by death, you know." Growled an angry voice.

"Eden?" whispered James.

Griffin and James moved towards two nearby rooms. When they entered the room, the door slammed shut behind them, locked. Adams' cursed and rushed over to it, trying to open it. He looked behind him, while the other door locked him and his squad in the large room. Two large TV's turned on, one showing Griffin and James trapped, the other Omega squad locked in a room, too.

"And if necessary, I will be the one to execute that order." Replied Eden.

The Tv with Omega squad enlarged, and heard as the audio turned on.

"Sarge, where the hell are we?"

"No idea, Private."

A weird, svcking noise was heard. It took Adams a moment to realize it was the air filtering system svcking out the air in the room. Omega squad began to bang on the door.

"Get us out! What t--?" one Private fell to the floor, oxygen deprived.

Slowly, one by one, the other three remaining soldiers quickly dropped to the floor, and did not move.

Adams watched in horror, and the video screen turned off. Then the video of Griffin and James enlarged.

"Damnit, Eden, you're insane!" cried out Simpson. They watched as the video show the room decompressing the air from Griffin and James as well. They banged on the door, and Adams tried to shoot at it to burst through it. It wouldn't budge.

Adams looked around as best he could, and found a nearby room. Rushing in, he found Eden's mainframe.

"I have you now, you bastard!" shouted Adams. He ran over, and tied a few EMP bombs on the large computer.

"You will NOT take this country from me!" shouted Eden enraged. He locked all the doors in the vault, and began to overload the reactor. Adam ran back, and blew the EMP bomb, which overloaded Eden's control on the doors.

James and Griffin burst through the door, gasping for air, and falling to the floor. They were weak, and Jackson and Simpson picked them up, while Forge moved down the hallway retracing their steps. They quickly ran as fast as they could through the halls, hearing the loud, deafening sound of the reactor overloading. It wailed as the engines pumped faster and faster.

They reached the door, and they rushed through it. When they passed, Adams slammed the controls down to activate the door to close. The metal screeched as it grinded against one another and slowly rolled into place.

Running up the stairs, they were almost at the door of the Garage when they remembered something.

"The sandstorm?" whispered Forge.

Adams stood there for a moment, and cursed. He kicked the door down to a blizzard of sand flying everywhere with a deafening screech of wind. He couldn't see anything in front of him outside, but he could hear the reactor beginning to reach critical.

"Move your asses!" he shouted. They rushed through the door, and ran outside into the hellfire of sand. Moving sluggishly through the sand, they tried their best to stay atop of the sand. If they sat down, the sand would engulf them and drown them.

Adams tried his best to stay above the sand.

He couldn't see a thing, and didn't know if everyone was okay. Suddenly, he heard a large explosion. It rocked the ground, and made him fall down. He struggled to stand up, but just gave up.

Laying face down in the sand, he awaited his death. This mission was successful, at the cost of both teams and a Vertibird. What a failure he was?

When all hope was almost gone, the sand lightened up a large amount. Within a few more seconds, the sandstorm passed. He struggled to stand up, and looked around. Everyone else was slowly standing up.

"We made it? we made it!" cheered James. Forge went over and gave him a high-five. Jackson giggled, and Griffin and Simpson cleaned off their armor.

Adams waited a minute, cleaning things up, when he heard in the distance a familiar sound of blades twirling quickly through the air.

"This is Vertibird Phoenix to Captain Adams, do you read, sir?" crackled the radio.

Smiling, Adams replied. "Yes. We're here. Come pick us up."

"On our way, sir. ETA one minute. Also, we have good news, sir. Pararescue teams arrived at Hope's crash site and were able to extract both of them in time. They're okay, sir."

Adams smiled and took one last deep breath. Maybe it all wasn't wasted today?

Having less and less fans for the story, so I'll begin to wrap up the story here soon then to make sure it at least has some fans left when it ends.

Chapter 22
Outpost Redemption
January 15th, 2278
1300 Hours

It has been ten days since the destruction of the crazed president Eden. Outpost Redemption has been struggling in the wake of the destruction, but was able to gather more supplies from nearby abandoned huts and structures. Though Adam was still saddened from the death of Omega squad plus the loss of a Vertibird.

Though to re-raise moral, Adams adopted the old American symbol again. No more Enclave symbol, they now used the old American flag on their armor, Vertibirds, and gear. They were to save America. They were America's last hope.

Adams stared at Simpson as she was lying in his bed with him, softly stroking her hair. Being alone with her lately was amazing, and was glad he had her. The intercom next to his bed buzzed softly. Slowly sitting up, he turned it on. "Yes?"

"Sir, we need you in the briefing room." Replied Lieutenant Den.

"On my way." Stated Adams.

He slowly got out of bed, and dressed in his tan Enclave out-of-armor suit. Adams slowly moved down the halls, nodding at the passing fellow soldiers.

He passed by Jackson and Forge, who were cleaning their armor and fixing their weapons.

"Forge, update?" he demanded.

She looked at him with grease on her face; obviously she's been working on the Vertibirds. "Nothing new to report, sir. Enclave has been quiet lately, and same with everything else."

Adams' smiled at this, and moved towards the briefing room. Second Lieutenant Den, Second Lieutenant Johnson, and First Lieutenant Ford were standing around a small table with a make-shift layout of The Capitol Wasteland.

Captain Adams marched straight into the room, and instantly the three Lieutenants turned around and nodded to him and offered their hands. Adams shook them and thanked them. "Report."

"Sir, we've noticed some unusual activity on the Enclave. We believe they're amassing an assault on us. Possible leak of security within our ranks."

Adams frowned at this news, they needed more time before they could attack the enemies. "Prepare an assault in three days. Use all personal, I mean all. We need to take them all out, or die trying. They're corrupt, and need to be put down." He ordered, he then quickly moved out of the room, signaling Den to follow him.

Den quickly caught up to him, walking side by side with him. "Yes, sir?" he inquired.

"Is HV2 ready?"

"Almost, sir, she needs about one hour left, or so the grease-monkeys tell me."

"We need her now." Barked Adams. Den nodded, and followed him to the hanger. When they pushed the large metal doors open, they spotted HV2, a mammoth battle Vertibird. Almost twice the size of the average Vertibird, HV2 had twice the thickness of armor, twice the power and lift, and twice the cargo-hold. Four massive rutters shinned in the light, while it had six lasers throughout the body. One on the front, one in the back, and two on each side, each can be man-operated by an individual.

"Load it up, now." Ordered Adams. Den shouted for the workers to get out, and his co-pilot plus five troopers to load inside of it. Griffin and James walked up behind Adams, with the rest of the squad beginning to assemble. "Alright everyone, we're going to assault the bastards in three days. But we need more help."

They nodded, understanding. Adams gave a quick hand signal to make them all enter and get into their select positions. The Vertibird's rutters began to wail as they slowly started up. The wind and force blew the surrounding sand in all directions, causing three nearby workers to cover their eyes.

"Engines one and two? check. Engines three and four? minor disturbance, fix it with rerouting power from one and two for compensation. Complete, systems cleared." Den nodded to his co-pilot while the bird rocked back and fourth and began to lift off.

Simpson held onto Adams gently as the Vertibird began to lift off. Den smiled as they were airborne and began to head off.

"Where to, Captain?"

Adams looked out the window to the desert wasteland. "The purifier."

Den looked at Adams. "Sir, that's heavy Enclave lands. You know that."

Adams smiled. "If I'm right, when we arrive, it won't be."

Den was confused by this, and looked at his commanding officer for a moment. He sighed, nodded, and continued their flight. The gunners of the HV2 continued to scan the location nearby for threats.

The Vertibird moved quickly and fast, passing over the charred remains of the Citadel. HV2 circled over The Purifier and noticed smoke and many destroyed encampments all around it. "What the hell happened?" called out Griffin. Adams smiled.

"No one fire unless I order otherwise." Barked Adams. He nodded to Den to tell him to land. The Vertibird began to slowly descend, and touched the ground with a thud.

The hatches sizzled and popped open, and Adams pushed his way outside. There stood the Lone Wanderer executing the last remaining soldiers left alive. He turned around, and aimed at Adams. The squad raised their weapons and pointed at him, waiting for the order.

"Ah, finally. Time to end this." Mumbled the Lone Wanderer. He pointed his gun towards Adams forehead and stood there for a moment. Griffin and the rest of the squad watched tensely as they held their fire. Adams crossed his chest with his arms.

"You don't shoot un-armed personal." Retorted Adams. "It's not part of you. Or else you would have back when I was weak and ready to die. You constantly tried to make me put back a fight to justify the kill."

The Lone Wanderer sighed, and put his gun slowly down to his hip, though his finger still on the trigger. Adams signaled for his teammates to do the same.

"Why have you come, then?" grumbled the Lone Wanderer.

Adams' smiled. "We need your help, if you haven't heard let, the Enclave is in two factions. One that wants to restore America, and one that wants to destroy it. I lead the one that's going to save us. We need your help in taking the corrupt government down.

He stood there for a moment, and noticed there was no more Enclave symbol next to the Vertibird, instead, there was the old American flag. He frowned, and stood there silently.

"Alright, what did you have in mind?"
