The final chapter is done. This is it, the last one. It's as long as two chapters in one, since I did not want to end it lamely with two chapters and have you all wait a day. Thank you all for reading the story, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. This thread can stay open until it reaches 200 posts, which then our friendly neighborhood bear will close it. I'll be glad to write more stories in the future and possibly a sequel, though I'd suggest if you're not already a member of my site you should if you'd like to see updates and whatnot, links to future stories, polls for what happens, and etc. Thank you all for making this happen.
Chapter 23
Near Outpost Eden
January 18th, 2278
0300 Hours
They stood ready; all the soldiers of the new American government, nicked named “Freedom Fighters” by some of the troopers, were getting ready to assault Outpost Eden. All the Freedom Fighters had their armor painted in American colors to signal to the rest whom was allied and who was enemy. Two soldiers even carried a large American flag and were going to rush forward with it in hand as a symbol.
“Captain, we’re awaiting your command.” Radioed in Lieutenant Den, HV2 and the other Vertibirds had been flying low and slow a ten mile radius around Outpost Eden to stay behind the radar and ready to strike at a moments notice.
Captain Phil Adams looked around his followers. Everyone was ready to begin moving forward. He hoped the Lone Wanderer was going to live up to his part of the deal. Simpson stood next to him, looking nervous. He turned to her and held her close, “relax. We’ll win.” He whispered.
She looked at him, and whispered. “That’s not why I’m nervous. Phil…” she looked away and held herself closer to him. “I’m… pregnant.” Adams blinked, and she sighed.
“That’s… wonderful.” He smiled at her, and kissed her softly on the lips. This helped rebuild his confidence. She took a deep breath and relaxed, thankful he did not react badly. Before he could ask a question, the radio turned back on.
“Captain?” questioned Den.
Adams smiled, and turned on the radio. “Begin.” He commanded. Over a hundred cheers could be heard and everyone suddenly stood up from their spots and charged towards Outpost Eden. Two nearby Vertibirds flew over them, firing away. Raid sirens began to turn on at Outpost Eden while flood lights shined through the skies and surrounding lands.
Two missiles fired off into the sky and one slammed straight into the tail of Vertibird Last Stand, and the rear tore straight off. Last Stand continued to spin in a circle and slammed straight down into a guard tower, exploding. Two hostile Vertibirds lifted off, and began to fire off lasers down on the troopers.
“Ice Void, take them down!” shouted Adams. Ice Void flew in low and fired off a few lasers straight into one hostile [censored]-pit, blowing out the Vertibird. It loss control, and flew straight down into three ‘Freedom Fighters.’ The second hostile Vertibird turned towards Ice Void and charged towards them. They both were in a dead-lock, heading straight towards one another, firing off their lasers, hoping one would go down first.
A nearby hostile soldier fired off two rockets towards a nearby couple of Freedom Fighters; one blew up near them and tore them apart. The second rocket was blown off course from the explosion, and flew into the air. The rocket slammed into the side of Ice Void, and forced the Vertibird to turn to its side, unable to control itself. It flew straight into the hostile Vertibird and both blew into a fireball, showing flames and fire all over the battlefield.
Adams and Griffin charged forward, dodging the debris, and firing off shots at the Enclave. Four Hellfire troopers charged towards them, their Heavy Incinerators, ready to fire. Suddenly, bullets shot out from the nearby area and sliced through the first trooper’s armor with ease. The rest was quickly taken down as well. Adams looked back, Jackson nodded to him.
James threw a Cyro-grenade towards two hostiles, freezing them a burst of white light; he ran over to them and punched them both with his Hellfire armor, shattering them into little pieces. Vertibird Phoenix flew in low, letting Forge jump out the side near the shattered tower, and some other troopers, quickly taking off. However, before he could get far, his wing clipped a neighboring hostile Vertibird just taking off, and they both flew off in different directions, out of control. Phoenix slammed into the ground on the side and tore off the wing, slowly grinding to a halt.
Only two Vertibirds left already, HV2 and Enola Gay. Seven Freedom Fighters charged forward behind Lieutenant Ford. They cheered and fired off their lasers, blasting holes into the wall. Two Hellfire troopers fired off their incinerators, igniting three into a fireball. Ford jumped to the side, and tagged the wall with two Plasma Bombs, and ran off. He then pulled the trigger, causing a large explosion, tearing a wall through the Outpost. Sixteen troopers rushed forward through the hole, taking their opportunity with a steel fist.
Suddenly, six hostile Vertibirds came out from behind the lines of the Freedom Fighters, obviously waiting in ambush. Adam turned around, shocked. He grabbed a nearby Tesla Cannon from a fallen trooper and ready, aimed, and fired. The cannon blew a hole through one Vertibird, causing it to spin out of control and tagged another hostile Vertibird, causing them to plummet to the earth in a hellfire of debris.
Two nearby Enclave personal shot off at Adams. He quickly jumped to the side to dodge the shots, but his Tesla Cannon was ruined. Enola Gay turned around from the assault and charged towards the four remaining hostile Vertibirds. He fired off his lasers as best he could, though the four of them quickly took him down. They flew untouched, and continued to drop Plasma Bombs on the Freedom Fighters lines. Many were wiped out the minute the bombs were dropped.
“Damnit!” shouted Adams. They were getting wiped out. HV2 turned and fired off with all six lasers in all directions, slicing through the air with beautiful red streaks. Though the behemoth HV2 may be, four Vertibirds will take him down.
Suddenly, HV2 was hit on the side by a few lasers, blowing out a chunk of the ‘bird, and causing it to smoke. The extra armor helped it stay up in the air, but slowly. The lasers attempted to fire at the hostile Vertibirds to shake them off, which thankfully took one down. Its engines wailed as it attempted to stay up, and slammed into the ground, exploding.
Simpson stayed back with Jackson to help as a spotter as he fired off multiple shots with the TSNE1, a Tesla version of the Enclave’s Sniper Rifle. James charged through the hole with multiple troopers and fired off his weapon. Though he did not see the Hellfire trooper still alive on the ground behind him lift up his pistol and fire off multiple rounds into the back of James. He cried out in pain, and dropped to the ground, dead.
Adams was enraged, he charged forward and kicked the Hellfire trooper over, and put his boot up high, slamming it straight into the head of the enemy soldier. Forge rushed over to Adams. When he turned around, an enemy trooper had his pistol raised to Adams forehead, about to fire. Forge was able to quickly push Adams out of the way, but the shot went straight into her instead, blowing a hole into her chest.
She fell to the ground, dead as well. Adams fired off multiple shots with his Tesla Pistol into the soldier that killed Forge. He was beginning to lose his squad mates, both recent and old timers. This was not going well.
Suddenly, a loud, blaring sound was heard. Then the sound of charging. Adams looked up over the hill, and noticed dozens, hundreds, possibly over a thousand Brotherhood of Steel members, charging down the hill, and firing. In the front of them all, stood the Lone Wanderer. It appears they were able to recruit many and regroup in the time since the destruction of the Citadel. After all, Eden did not allow them to dwindle their numbers by hitting them in the marsh.
The Lone Wanderer looked down at Adams. “I still hate you, and will get my revenge one day.” He muttered. “But for now, we have an enemy to destroy.” The Lone Wanderer put out his hand, and helped Adams up. The Brotherhood of Steel members had many rocket troopers, who fired off into the air at the Vertibirds. Two enemy Vertibirds were quickly hit and blew up in the sky in a fireball. Adams was about to cheer when he noticed that they could not tell that HV2 was allied, and four rockets slammed into the side of the Vertibird. It wailed, and spun out of control. He watched in horror as it began to tear apart before his eyes in the sky.
The tail section ripped off, throwing out the rear and side gunners into the sky, and then the cockpit tore off. He held his breath, noticing as Lieutenant Den and his co-pilot were svcked out of the Vertibird by the force, and fell over three hundred feet in the sky, and crashed into the ground. He looked away, not wanting to see what happened to their bodies.
Though Adams still had a mission, so he ignored the feelings of loss, and continued on with the hundreds of allies straight into Outpost Eden’s lands. The opposing forces could not handle such an onslaught, and were quickly overrun. Dozens tried to hold off the oncoming forces by firing off Incinerators, which created barriers of flame. The scorching heat blasted against Adam, and he braced himself.
He still had to continue forward, so he and a few other troopers rushed through the flames as fast as they could. They were able to break through, and attack the survivors. Adams grabbed the head of a young Enclave recruit, and could see the fear in his eyes. He may be eighteen, nine at most, but he was still an enemy who fired on Adams. Adams slammed the head of the soldier straight into the concrete wall, spraying grey matter and blood all over the wall and his armor.
Adams was in a bloodlust, he charged forward, ignoring all the fighting. He needed to end one last problem: Pebbles. Kicking down the door, Adams grabbed out his knife and slammed it straight into the heart of a guard. He cried out, and tried to fight back, but Adams crushed him by slamming his body against the wall in-between a concrete wall and Adam’s pure steel Hellfire armor.
Rushing forward, he threw two nearby Plasma grenades into a hallway, blowing up five defenders in their out-of-armor uniforms. Adams ignored the gore everywhere, and continued to rush forward, knowing where to head.
He kicked down the door of the office of Lieutenant Pebbles, to see him sitting there with his legs up on his desk, smoking a cigar.
“I wondered what would take you so long.” Muttered Pebbles. Adams was shocked that he just stood there while his men were being slaughtered, and had the nerve to smoke and relax.
“You’ll pay for betraying me, the civilians, and America.” Cried out Adams in a bloodlust.
Pebbles smiled, his uniform crisp and clean. “Let’s not talk about betrayal, when you left men to die back on your first command.” Adams was confused by this. “Oh yes, you do remember, don’t you? Your medical files show nightmares for years about the loss of Corporal Smith, I remember you telling me about him back in DC.” He took a puff of smoke.
“I had to choose. Why are you bringing this up?” growled Adams.
“Because you betrayed your teammate, by leaving him to die. He wants revenge.”
Adams’ brow creased, and his mind wandered. Smith was dead, how did he “want revenge?”
Pebbles signaled to the door behind him, and made a snap with his fingers. The door opened slowly, and a mutated creator walked out past it. “Se-…sergeant?” mumbled the creator.
“Smith!” gasped Adams. But how was he alive? He was overrun by the Super Mutants!
“You see, Adams. When you left him and his men to die, the Super Mutants did not kill them, they used experimental HEV viruses on them. The other’s died, but Smith here survived. We found him four days ago, wandering the wastes.” Pebbles stood up, and took a puff of smoke.
“Smith… how? But… if I had known!” cried out Adams. Smith was deformed beyond repair and took a while for Adam to recognize that it was truly him. His skin dark green, his face messed up, his body deformed. Obviously a failed HEV virus. The way his body was shaped, he must have been in pain. Smith breathed heavily, and stared at Adams.
“You…. Le… left me to… die…” mumbled Smith. Smith’s breathing increased, much heavier. He roared loudly, and charged towards Adams, slamming him against the wall. Adams was knocked breathless, and tried to push him back.
“Smith! I’m sorry! I didn’t know!” he tried to cry out. Roaring could be heard by Smith as he stared to punch through Adams armor, piercing it. A large hole was beginning to form in Adams armor.
“You see, Sergeant.” Chuckled Pebbles, Obviously ignoring Adams new rank of Captain. “He was a failed HEV experiment to the Super Mutants, but not to use. Lets just say, we gave him a few enhancements.”
Adams’ tried to push him back, but it was no use. He could feel his body screaming in pain as small objects began to slice through his insides. Adams closed his eyes, trying to call for help. He almost blacked out, when a burst of cold air brushed past him. He thought he was dead.
His body was cold, very cold now. He couldn’t feel any part of his body. Was this how death felt like? He thought it would be warm, not cold. He slowly opened his eyes, and saw Smith frozen. Adams fell back against the wall. The Lone Wanderer stood at the door, and pushed Smith down, shattering him.
“No!” cried out Adams as he watched Smith be no more. Pebbles growled and tried to pull out his Plasma Pistol, but the Lone Wanderer quickly shot him with deadly accuracy through the head, splattering gore all over the wall. Pebbles’ lifeless body fell to the floor.
The Lone Wanderer walked over to Adams, and pointed his pistol at Adams’ head. “I told you I’d get my revenge.” Adams closed his eyes, and heard a loud shot.
His ears were ringing, and his body shivering. He opened his eyes slowly again, and noticed the Lone Wanderer staring at him, a bullet hole next to Adams head, obviously missed on purpose, but close enough to give anyone scared [censored]less. As the Lone Wanderer stared at Adams, he smiled.
“My revenge is complete, be thankful you weren’t holding a weapon when I aimed at you.” He whispered, and slowly walked off towards nearby Brotherhood of Steel members, and told them to prepare to head back to base.
Griffin, Jackson, and Simpson rushed through the door. “Phil!” cried Simpson. She rushed over to him, and held him up. Jackson stood guard and Griffin began to administer stimpacks.
“I’m okay.” Whispered Adams. Simpson softly kissed him on the lips, tears in her eyes. He looked at her, one last question he had to ask that he was unable to ask before. “Is it a boy, or a girl?”
Griffin and Jackson looked at Simpson shocked. She smiled at Adams. “Both.”
Adams’ eyes widened. Twins, both sixes. He smiled, and exhaled. Even though he lost many friends today, he gained a few allies. The Enclave was wiped out completely, Eden was dead. Super Mutants destroyed, and The Pitt Purged. America would finally be able to rebuild, and prosper. He slowly began to stand up, already feeling his body healing from the stimpacks.
They helped him walk slowly outside to the surviving members of the assault. Brotherhood and Freedom Fighters both were helping one another heal and fix up. Two captured Vertibirds flew over the remains of the Outpost, guarding.
He did it. No, they did it. The Wasteland was clean, and America was slowly being rebuilt before his very eyes. Pure, and unpure. Friends, and enemies. All stood there together, helping one another rebuild a broken past. The Lone Wanderer moved off away, obviously now the new controlling ruler of the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood followed him and left the area, back to their base.
The remaining Freedom Fighters moved over to Adams, less than fifty. Though there were still over a hundred captured Enclave soldiers who were being converted to their side. They finally did it, for good. They were America’ s last hope, and they did it.
“What now, sir?” questioned Jackson. Adams’ smiled at the man, and put his hand on his shoulder. He reached over and pulled Simpson and Griffin close to him, his squad, and his family. He watched as the sun began to rise over the wasteland, ushering in a new day. Simpson laid her head against his chest.
“Now?” He chuckled. “We rebuild America.”
With that, they began to walk off towards the left over Vertibirds, and prepared to fly back to base.
