Actually, one of my grandfather's neighbors, found what I believe was an 1873 model Winchester rifle, sticking out of the field while he was farming. The barrel was eroded away or cut or something, very weathered.

Supposedly his grandfather wasn't the one who put them there, though. He was going out to work on the railroads in the Utah territory and at the time, you didn't go out there unarmed, so he bought it used, and the notches were already there.
