American Medical Association Report: 1-2 hoursday = Video Ga

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:21 am

Guidelines are made to provide a guiding line toward making personal intelligent decisions. Many may think that 3 hrs of gaming per day is okay. That is why the guideline is there. To bring awareness to what you think may be okay has in fact been studied and shown to be detrimental. Without guidelines, we would all be quickly floating towards our own biased decisions, which may not be best for us.
Do you work for the AMA? You're probably going to be asking for donations next.

I'd like to bring to your awareness the few hours you've wasted on this forum, now that you know you can more intelligently spend your time in a more productive manner.

The reason that I am on this forum, is because I am doing work in the other window. I spend 2-3 min typing a post, than going back to my work. I could not afford to be playing Skyrim.

You have to be rich first, with a totally secure future. To think, we've been doing it wrong all these hundreds of years...
Is there a guideline for that? How will I know when I'm rich? Will someone show up at my door with a giant novelty check, or what?

Those 2-3 minutes add up.

31 x 2 = 62

You have wasted atleast 1 hour of your life. No procreation for you.

It depends on your current situation. If you are rich and have your future secured, then you can reproduce to have children - they should easily take up the time. If you live in a trailer, you can get a second job to get a better, larger trailer. If you did not finish college, now is your chance. As you can see, it all depends.

Incorrect. I work for 20 min and I post for 2 min. Even if the 2 min would eventually add up to 1 hr, this is much different than playing for 1 hr straight and not being productive. Playing Skyrim or any videogame for 2 min, pausing going back to work, and coming back for another 2min is simply impractical and no one does it.

Let's all agree that Skyr;m has a point. :)

Let's also all agree that everyone's life ambition is not to be as maximally productive as possible.

Let's also all agree that it's not a good idea to replace real-life achievement with virtual achievement.

Yay. Everyone wins.

2 hours? Okay, makes sense. You know, I put in like... 8 hours a day at work. Maybe that's another addiction I need professional help with.

Please elaborate on that.
This is actually less productive. You are not totally focused on your work.

The difference there is that you're actually doing something productive: making money. Of course there are such things are a "wrokaholic", so a "work addiction" is quite real.

Or course a little relaxation time 2 hours a day with video games would hardly be harmful, in fact, it's probably rather helpful to have something that can take your mind off of your life. As long as you don't ignore your responsibilities to play the game.

Bigger trailer, then college, then we procreate. Got it. :read:

I'll agree that anything that gets in the way of achieving the goals that one has set for themselves deserves serious scrutiny. I won't agree that people shouldn't spend time doing things they enjoy or that someone else gets to decide what those things are. No amount of guidelines is a replacement for objectivity and rational thought, and no amount of overreaction is a replacement for common sense.

Obtaining a Master's degree requires on average 500 hours of reading. There are gamers who actually spent more than this amount on games. And, trust me, they don't have a Masters out of it.
I have very little to do in life, even if I could get a standard job. I would be left with an unimaginable amount of time left. I have so much time I can write a book and play games to my hearts content, and browse these forums. But because they'll never be aware of my circumstances I'm an addict, right good fail there science. :( It isn't often you let me down.

Ah, this report is from the same 'professional' organization that classifies any non-straight orientation as a mental illness and is currently trying to remove most forms of autism from being diagnosed.

Yeah, I can't take this report seriously.
That's okay, I don't think anyone is taking this thread seriously, not even OP.

... currently trying to remove most forms of autism from being diagnosed.

By this, you are referring to them refuting an association with vaccines, or what?

I work eight hours a day (often more). Eating various meals and prep work about an hour a day. I sleep maybe six hours. Watch the tube for maybe an hour. Listen to the radio for news all day. And I'm fairly convinced it all hinders my social life...

Guess I'm classified as an addict of financial self-sustainability, nutrition, rest, and entertainment/information by the same logic.

Certain members of the AMA should revisit their Maslow or adjust the hierarchy for the times.

What? I play video games for probably around 3 or 4 hours a day, and I am not addicted. In fact, most of the time I would rather be hanging out with someone or something.

Edit: Furthermore I would like to point out, if it hasnt been already, that if this study were about reading or something, it wouldnt be called an addiction that needs attention.

Video games are a hobby. If you start to label them as an addiction, then you might as well label everything that people enjoy to do as an addiction.
