Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Post » Tue Oct 05, 2010 12:33 am

So, I've played a bunch of 'horror' games in my time (silent hill series, both dead spaces, Resident Evils 2 and 4), but I recently stumbled across a PC game that came out last year called Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which is the only game that has actually managed to scare me, and I mean sure there were moments in those other games where something just jumps at you with no warning, but with Amnesia, the atmosphere and visuals, the music and audio, it all combines to make this environment that keeps you in suspense and keeps you worrying, and literally had me feel like I was about to crap myself many times throughout the game (especially since you cant defend yourself at all, you have to trust your instincts, and plan things out). I don't know if this game has been just a sort of hidden jewel this whole time, but it only costs 20 bucks on steam, and the system requirements aren't that high, so for anyone who wants to play a true horror game, I highly recommend this one.

It's a good game, but distortions cause my head to hurt.

They gave me headaches too at first (especially since I'm playing on a new, 25" 1080p LED monitor :3) but after playing for about an hour I just got used to them.

Yeah, it's pretty good, i liked the setting and the decesion to not let you fight, so it didn't end up being basically an action game, like so many other games that started out as horror. I don't understand what was the point of the "bad" ending, but that's no big deal as the other two are more obvious choices anyway. Definitely worth getting.

I love it. Pre-ordered it months in advance. Shame it's not very replayable, but that's no surprise for the kind of game it is. But it was never a full price game, so that's okay.

I'll probably play it again in a few months.

I'm looking forward to hearing about what Frictional Games comes up with next.

Well there is "custom store" supposedly where you can mod your own store with the appropriate mod tools but I have heard like nothing about modding the game. Shame though, I finished the demo today and it was quite fun but I have more important things than games in my shopping list.

I've heard lots of good things about this game. I really want to play it but I live alone and I'm a wimp, so I'm cautious of getting myself scared silly and then having to deal with freaking out every time I hear the house shift. :P

If you've played through a good bit of amnesia there's a nice video out there for it. It contains forum censored language so I can't post it, but I remember its title was Holy *censored* Amnesia, what the *censored*

You can fill in the blanks. It has nearly 2 million views so not too hard to find.

Just started playing tonight.

I'm about 30 minutes in. I'm not happy with my decision.

Tomorrow night (or the following night), I might hook it up to the big screen tv with surround sound and see if I can get my roommates to join in on the fun haha.

I'm recording it and uploading it part-by-part to YouTube.

I know, I know. I just wanna see if I can creep them out. Two of my roommates were horrified at FEAR 2 and the ones girlfriend hates scary stuff. I think it could be good.

A one night experiment, if you will.

What decision, and what are you not happy about?

I haven't played it, but might after reading this thread.

It's part of the "Potato ARG" that's been ongoing since April Fools Day. Remember all those "#PotatoFoolsDay" updates? They were part of that. You can follow it http://valvearg.com/wiki/Valve_ARG_Wiki if you want; it's interesting and even a little creepy, and also straight down the proverbial rabbit hole. I've been following it as best I can in between some freelance work and I can barely make heads or tails of it.

My decision to play it. It's sooo creepy. I'm only 30 minutes in and I'm already constantly on the edge of my seat at every little bump, moan and groan.

If you want a game that will scare you and [censored] with you, this is the way to go.

I beat it last year.

It was a pretty fun game, and some of the puzzles were clever, but it was kinda easy. Plus it didn't scare me.

Really wish they would throw this on the 360, though they pretty much stated in will not happen. Oh well, that new computer will be here soon enough. :celebration:

That's interesting because in Europe it's €7,49. I guess the fact that no retail stores sell the game means that Steam has no reason to enforce its $1=€1 policy...
