PC UI and map...

Post » Mon Oct 18, 2010 5:52 am

Well the Hud i dont care one way or the other about.
Now the UI is not about whenever the text is big or small. Its about how the data is shown
Right now its "<---------------------Data---------------------------->

It should be
[Data] [Data]
[Data] [Data]

There is a reason why you see databases, information compiles, shopping lists, phone books use this system and not just a huge line.

That's what they did under the hood (tiered info level), but they displayed it in all the wrong ways possible.

With the current system, I will need to parse all the skills to see their current level and perks and write that info on a piece of paper so I can make a decision on my next level up. Awesome! /sarcasm.

Oh and please change the inventory... Dont have us select a item and it will highlight. Make slots for items so its easy to see where items go. Oh and improve the spell selection system.

oh then no thats kinda stupid, it would just seem like a waste of time to me and a moder is bound to do it, so why have a PC specific one

*sigh* PC needs a different user interface because most people playing on a PC are sitting within a couple of feet of a smallish screen and we don't need or want the large lettering and icons (which on a PC make using the interface more difficult!) that console players need to be able to read stuff on their telly screen from their sofa. It's not a huge thing to ask.

From their description "flip through it and see all the covers" I assume they mean Coverflow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afy5BEdRz8A

From what I've seen and heard the UI is very different from Oblivion, FO3 and New Vegas. Much more special graphics stuff. I wonder if it'll even be as easy to mod.

Oh no not a chance. You'll have to flip through every item of your equipment, and it will be presented to you on a massive rotating display turntable.

Hopefully we won't have to wait too long to get some screenshots showing the inventory and HUD.

but seeing how they did this in just a few days after the game was released, there really is no reason why the devs should do it themselves.

Any improvement over Oblivion's UI will be welcome. It is completely ridiculous to only display up to like 6 items per page when trying to scroll through your inventory potentially holding hundreds of items.

While I do agree the Oblivion UI was stupid, consoles don't need to have UI designed like that.
Morrowind on the Xbox used the same UI as Morrowind for the PC, and it worked fine on my TV...

Skyrim's menu system is completely different to oblivion.

GI described it as looking at different things in your surroundings. To check your skills, for example, the menu scrolls up and shows you the constellations of the sky which represent each skill.

And other stuff.

Edit: And there's a picture of that particular effect.

Todd Howard (slight paraphrase): 'We decided it would help with immersion if we made it look like iTunes"

Comments? I am honestly lost for, polite, words.

I'm starting to wonder where I could hire a cheap assassin. Any ideas? :banghead:

This is NOT how to design a truly good GUI. Okay, it looks good and cool and it shows information very clearly for people sitting far far away from their tv, that's fine. But the downside to this is: you will have to spend a lot, alot of time to find a particular skill or to review them all, especially if you wan't any detailed info on them. That's not good even at console standards. The GUI has to be fast and good to use, and fancy, but usability should be a priority on this one. As for PC's, well... :swear: You can afford to make things a lot smaller than that to show much needed information all or almost all at once. Bethesda should clearly hire me to direct UI-design after I graduate with my master's degree on interactive technology. :deal:

I really hope that this time they'll at least give the PC version its own UI with smaller font and more items/dialogue on the inventory/dialogue screen. As well as a larger map in colour.

Yes modders can do this too, but seeing how they did this in just a few days after the game was released, there really is no excuse why the devs can't do it themselves.

Well I think Todd Howard said that one of the things he wanted to do the most in Oblivion was change the font size and such on the menus. The only reason it was big back then I think was because of the standard definition televisions still in use at the time.

These days most if not all game developers throw that caution to the wind and just do small font anyway since HD TV's are so much more common.

Yes thats how we dont want it to be.
The "Bling bling" is the last thing you should think about.

The design of the UI is stupid and [censored] at best. Sure the bling bling is "nice". But you dont look at the skill menu to go "WOW EPIC PICTURES!" You go there because you want information about a skill and how strong you are at using it.

I think they're trying to make the map more 3D like Fable III did.

God no please... Dont do fables map system... I dont want to end up with nightmares AGAIN. Im still not completely over the shock from playing Fable 3. Fable 3 is a perfect example on how to not make a map and not make a menu and not make a leveling system...

Well, it seems like Bethesda took the wrong interpretation of how we wanted future UIs to look and function. Instead of interpreting it as "We need a high res UI that is PC friendly", they took it as "We need to make the UI look better". And of course, the word "better" is subjective here, because I for one am not really a fan of Apple's UIs. They seem to be more about flashy looks than functionality, which in an RPG, it's essential that your UI has at least some decent functionality to it.

The skills I can probably get used to, but if they have the items, quests, and other things like this, I will headbutt a whole through my wall into the next room.

If it is really messed up, hopefully DarN will be around to offer his exceptional UI skills and create a flawless UI for the PC version like he usually does. Seriously, why doesn't Bethesda just hire the man already? Or have him contribute to the creation of the UI.

I'm not going to judge until I see it in action, as it may be alright in practical use for all we know. I agree it looks rather clumsy to use at the moment.

Still, I think I prefer this "perk tree" setup here to the seemingly endless perk menu Fallout has. That thing got old fast.
