HD-TV and Video Games Question

Post » Thu Jul 17, 2014 9:18 am

Hey, so I made a somewhat dumb move today. I bought a PlayStation 4 without bothering to check if my non-HD TV could support it. As it so turns out, it can't. Turns out you must have an HD-TV in order to play a PlayStation 4/X-Box One.

I originally planned to take the console back, get my money back and spend it on videogames/books, but then a thought appeared: If I get a HD-TV, a small cheap one, would I be able to play the rest of my consoles on that? I have a PS3, X-Box 360, Wii, Gamecube and N64, none of which, I assume, are HD. I don't really want to shell out the bucks for an HD-TV if it can't support my other consoles.

Thoughts?

I don't know about the Wii, N64 or Gamecube, but the PS3 and 360 should work with it

Those will all work just fine. (well they do on my TV)

For the PS3 and Xbox360, you can even use an HDMI cable now instead of the traditional hook-ups, for a better picture.

Even the SNES and Sega Genesis works on a HDTV. I do it all the time.
The screen is a bit stretched, but your eyes get used to the new ratio pretty quick. (I can probably change the ratio to make it look more original, but haven't bothered yet)

edit:
Some HDTVs will require you use something like this for old sysytems like the SNES: http://www.retrotowers.co.uk/snes-n64-gamecube-av-cable

Very cheap, and works on any TV.
You can find them at electronic stores like.

As long as it supports AV, you should be fine with your older consoles like the Wii, Gamecube etc. I don't know about most HD TVs, but mine supports both HDMI and AV. Just be careful about which TV you get and make sure it has an AV plug in (the three color things). As for newer systems, they support HDMI so you can use them the same way you would your PS4.

Edit: Wait, is it called AV, or am I being silly? Whatever, composite component video or whatever.
