Android or iOS

the only way ive found out how to use flash is to download the app cloud browse from the app store. its laggy, emulates firefox, there is a wait in line for your turn and members get to access it whenever they want which means that you can be browsing on cloud browse and then it can kick you off.

CNET said 4g can't be toggled. And I don't think that offer is still good. I'd also prefer buying from a verizon store. By the way, are you speaking from experience with both OS's? I'd just like to avoid fanboyism.

I have far more experience with iPhones (6 in this house... don't ask, plus 2 iPads at work and another 2 iPhones... once again, please don't ask) than Android phones, but more experience with Android software. Also I just HATE the keyboard on the iPhone 4 as well as the inability to edit URLs or have capslock (imagine entering a 30+ character wifi password without capslock on a touch screen.... :dead:).

there is caps lock. double tap the arrow and then it will be a solid blue color instead of a faded blue.

Either I've never been able to do it fast enough or this doesn't work on the iPhone4

If it's the case with the iPhone 4, it's not alone: you can also edit URLs on the original iphone, but not later models. The keyboard on the 3GS is far superior in my book to that of the 4

Oh. Heh. Cool. And yet another question, can you download things from the market over 20megs? What about different files like .zip and the like? (over 3g)

Yes you can download all sorts of files on 3G/4G. Android actually has an accessible file system and many phones have memory cards, so you can actually use and browse said files, unlike on the iPhone.

Definitley a major plus. I'll have to kick it around a bit. I'm starting to veer a little more toward the android side. Just the apps and the UI...anyways I'm going to sleep. Goodnight :/

All the big-name apps are practically identical on both platforms (they don't want to lose out on a huge userbase -- as mentioned, the Android marketshare is now larger than the iPhone marketshare), and you can change the UI to your liking.

The iPhone 5 is pretty much in the bag as far as release, and there are already some http://gizmodo.com/#!5795762/iphone-6-will-be-even-thinner-and-lighter-with-sharps-new-lcds-supposedly-being-fingered-by-apple

I will admit I only have limited experience with iphones, I absolutely love my Droid. I use it for browsing the internet every night when I'm in bed.

That requires jailbreaking. Jailbreaking = absolutely no support from Apple, and they actively try to squash you like a bug, whereas rooting an android phone you can still very easily go to your service provider and get it fixed/things like battery replacements (just can't RMA).

(Tasker is a reason in and of itself to get an Android-based phone IMO, it brings so much versatility to the table)

if you are the market trend guy, iPhone. if you are the kind that would exploit every possibility, go Android.

Windows Phone 7 :hehe:

of course I'm looking at this from a developers perspective, I don't like Java and although Objective-C isn't all that bad it's the App Store that ruins it for me. Not to mention all the restrictions in the iOS platform.

Here's why I would choose WP7: I love C# and WP7 has .NET, Silverlight and XNA. If you're also looking for a portable gaming device then you should know that WP7 uses the same framework as xbox arcade games (XNA) and there are already plenty of really good WP7 games. Even Angry Birds is coming to the WP7 platform.

If I were to chose between Android and iOS I would chose Android. Java is annoying but at least it's a relatively open platform so you don't have to go through all that App Store BS. Plus Android apps are usually free.

But you must like at least one language that runs on the JVM? (Python, Ruby, Tcl, PHP, Lisp, Java, Erlang, Lua, C, Ada..)

I think it's all the commercials :P. However, it seems like its always said that there are more/better apps on iPhone. I'm just a little new when it comes to android. None of my friends have it, whereas I'm slightly versed in iPhones.

I wouldn't rely on commercials for an adequate comparison.

Skype isn't very great on Android. There's no video support, since most of the phones don't have dual cameras. That's one area where iPhone is still king.

I've used Skype on an HTC Inspire 4G, on an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPod 4Gen, and without a doubt, the iOS is absolutely worse with Skype. Cannot tell you how often the stored server messages lock up the app if you send hundreds or more messages a day for the app to backlog, which it makes sure to do first thing you open a message to send to a person. Annoying as [censored]. Truthfully, though, I don't like either mobile Skype app very much. I'd just steer clear of Skype apps at all no matter the mobile platform if you actually message a lot with the PC version.

It is true that your selection is slightly larger with iOS for reasons described already -- they've been out longer. On the other hand, the development of Android has been nothing short of frenzied, and the apps/games I've seen so far have been quite nice, as well as I have to side with any OS that allows more room for the insane customization Android does.

OP should do research and figure out which is best for them, just don't rely on commercials to make your decisions.

Fair enough. I should have qualified my statement. I agree that Skype just doesn't deliver, regardless of the mobile version. What I meant to say is neither does as well as Apple's FaceTime, which is, despite its flaws and the fact that it can only do video chats between Apple users (and PC users, but I don't know any PC users who bother with it), still the best mobile voice/video chat option I can identify.

Android. 100%.

I was recently comparing my new HTC Desire HD with a friend's iPhone 4. This was a 80% win for HTC, I was faster to access web page, faster on the map/GPS, the widgets are a kill for customizing the screen, the system allows endless customization. Android is winner !
Not talking about apps, a lot are free, and there are so many available.

I have fairly extensive experience with both iPhone and Android, and I definitely prefer Android. I've owned four iPhones and two Android phones, and have found that Android offers a lot more customization. You said you don't really like the UI on Android, but you can make it look like whatever you want with just a bit of effort, for example here is my new UI http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/ska8tdude/snap20110427_125852.png and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v358/ska8tdude/snap20110427_125715.png. As far as apps go, I'd still say that iPhone is king. However, Android is getting more and more apps every day, it won't be long before Android surpasses iOS in that respect. Not too mention you can tether your Android for free with little effort, and overclock it.

I wouldn't exactly say "market trend guy,"but then again I'm all for ease of use. This thread has pretty much convinced me to go android. I hope I can fit the droid x in my pockets though. It's kind of hard to judge the size based on the locked down ones in the store, and it seems pretty dang massive. Oh, and I'm fairly certain verizon doesn't have WP7.

I have a Desire HD, which is actually just barely bigger than the Droid X, and it fits the pocket with ease. It looks bigger than it is, because so much of the space is taken up by that big screen it's got. It's (the Droid X) 12mm taller and 7mm wider than an iPhone - and roughly the same depth. But yeah, you're right... Best bet is just to head to the store and decide which feels best in your hands, and which has the options you most want. In overly simplistic terms: iPhone has ease of use, Android has customizability.
