Is android "slavery" really that big of a deal?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:22 am

That's not what Benjamin Franklin said....

Anyway, androids aren't human, even if they mimic human emotions. You can have a pet in the game, is that slavery? Dogmeat has a lot of emotions I'm sure, maybe he's not sentient as opposed to a humanoid, but then we're drawing an interesting line here aren't we. If something isn't sentient, it's ok to enslave it.

To be fair it's believed this sort of situation might happen in the future as robotics advances. Still it's no excuse to act like that.

Yes because actually taking others into consideration and stopping oppression clearly makes someone a "Tumblr user"

It's not a big deal at all, and it won't be until we achieve genuine AI.

Machines don't understand the feeling of being a "slave" it's a toaster that looks like a human that has been programmed to walk, talk and learn from its environment and reply to certain input. that's all it is!!

Your logic is, it wants to go to the beach to learn more! ErmaGerd it has feelings and deserves rights, free the machines!!!!

If your toaster was made to scream when you push slider down for the 100th time but you didn't know they programmed it like this, would you feel bad that it screamed and start a campaign to end all toaster enslavement.

As we are arguably on the verge of species evolution ourselves

to homo extensis (augmented man),

whether sapience may be a by product of both carbon and silicon is an interesting question of a more than academic nature.

I'm not troubled by the 'enslavement' of talky toaster, but clearly there will be a line to cross...

EXCEPT from what we've seen with Harkness in Fallout 3 clearly he does understand emotions and has them, clearly he is on the same mental level of humans, can do the same things, even looks the same as humans. If you bothered to learn more about the situation you would understand that. He is human in every way except his insides.

Clearly since he wants freedom to the point he is willing to alter his appearance that he in fact DOES understand what it feels to be a slave. So again, actually bother to LEARN about the situation with Harkness instead of thinking of him as "a talking toaster"

If an android is advanced enough to grant that its consciousness can be deemed 'human', sure it's a big issue.

This just shows that people merely "settled" with outlawing human slavery but would think it'd be okay if we scientifically proved races not belonging to ours is "sub-human". Some fellas tried to do that last century..

Which is impossible in reality.
Feel free to prove me wrong.
Any time now.
:teehee:

Seriously, depends on how "sapient" they are. Are they feeling beings with free will? If yes, it makes no difference if they run on biological or synthetic hardware.

If it's just a machine capable of "intelligent" actions on it's own, then it's just a tool. But seeing the "Replicated Man" quest in F3, i think the first will be the case for 4.

And as history shows, not granting freedoms and rights to them will cause a civil war, and i suspect such synthetics are much tougher to kill and much better at killing than your average human

to be fair lot of those things could apply to a human as they grow up. Learning to walk, talk and learn from there enviroment.

Plus technically we do not know the extent of these androids minds, for all we know there "brains" are just as advanced as our own.

You are right.

What people who claim robots are worth human life really are saying is that human life isnt worth anything.

They even said that destroying robots is the same as the holocaust. How insane!

Emotions are easy to mimic, talky the toaster AKA harkness sees in his environment the need for people to be free and a sense of want or need in a environment so talky the toaster mimics and has a little cry, like in his holotape.

talky the toaster doesn't know what it wants that's why he sits on his cold hard metal butt all day on a rusty boat.

It's because people are using logic that has been used by groups whose whole goals are slavery and genocide. Plus I don't even use tumblr.

And here is more proof of someone using the logic I was just talking about.

You should! You would fit right in!

Art imitates life and this "but it's a video game, doesn't matter!" this doesn't do a damn thing. If you don't like the topic don't post in it, if you're going to criticize people with that don't bother posting in here. This whole debate could actually matter in the future as robotics and computing advances to the point that we may be able to make artificial life like Androids.

It's probably impossible, but I have to be honest with you, genetic programming scares me (It's where you let computer write programs) a little bit, mostly because the results have always been weird.

However, it's not slavery, and will never be slavery, unless the slave is a sentient being.

So discussing anything regarding video games is pointless?

God forbid we have a philosophical debate about something related to a video game.

Except we're explicitly told that's not how Harkness works. He was programmed to be an android enforcer, and to never question orders. He broke free of that programming and became sentient. His actions, will, and desire is his own.

If he were just mimicing others, he would never have left the Institute in the first place. Harkness is an example of an AI construct that's become fully sentient and is completely indistinguishable from a human aside from his inner working. He'd pass the Turing Test with a 100% rate easily.

Frankly if its okay to enslave something like Harkness I can't think of any reason not to enslave a human.

Humans can mimic emotions as well. What does that say about us?

And we know *exactly* what Harkness wanted. It was spelled out rather clearly. He wants to be his own man, to have his own life. He doesn't want to be a slave to the Institute.

It's still a discussion on the topic of Fallout 4, and how this will relate to that game. One day we will have a serious discussion about this, but not today, so let's not take it seriously and enjoy the discussion.

As far as I'm concerned, it is an evil, but since I plan to import the idea of existing player from New Vegas, I think he's going to have a lot of fun enslaving androids and turning them into dishwashers lol, but he's an evil character, that's what he does.

My good character, would probably do the opposite.

Cider are you a toaster from the future, we're you made to toast muffins when you were only meant to toast thin sliced bread. I feel the butt hurt in your posts about toaster freedom. :)

I'm not even that.

I really don't see how you can import a character given how the game starts.

Would it be spam if I posted a 'sing-along' video about Dixie? I just feel like the anti-Android people need a theme song.

To live and die for human-kind,
Huzzah! Huzzah!
We'll be walking for the humans!

The filthy Synths must understand,
that they were made in the image of man,
never were they ever free,
because they were never flesh and blood.

Huzzah! Huzzah!

The human race shall endure,
for evermore, for all eternal.
The synthetic race made to serve us
We march on for the humans!

*flutey melody*

000
C'mon folks! Let's write that song for the anti-Android people.
