I hate bringing animals into battle. I love them too much to tolerate the concept of endangering their lives against their will, and whenever I take an animal companion, whether it be a dog or horse, I always feel a huge burden of responsibility to protect those animals. Despite the common argument that 'they're just pixels', I simply cannot let them die, for I feel atrocious and have to reload. And with the companion AI as it usually is, this happens a lot, so I end up feeling bad for the whimpers of the companion and reloading too often to make gameplay enjoyable :violin:
As for human companions, I'd love to have an actual relationship with a companion in both interaction and combat. Sure, backstory and character are absolutely essential, but the essence of a companion for me should be equality, and the sharing of a dangerous journey together. As companions have been in Oblivion mods and in Fallout, it unfortunately devolves into a one-sided relationship where it seems I'm babysitting them most of the time, where they follow me like idiots, engage blindly in combat and get in my way, annoying me to no extent. I help them more than they do me, and so they're more of a hindrance than help. In other words, I'd like a capable, independent companion, not a slave that fights for me. What I've seen so far doesn't cut it for me.
Because of these factors, I walk alone. Sure, the camps at night are incredibly lonely, but I don't suffer from the burdens of protective responsbility :ermm:
