Animal companions, kthx please!

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:53 pm

I always loved having a dog companion in games.. but wished we could switch things up and choose something else. I love cats the most, but would actually choose a bird of prey as my companion. They can fly over head and scout the land for you, help you hunt or fish (if you're into that.. I'm not), attack enemies from above, etc.. you could even train them to *ninja poop* on those whom you don't like very much, for funzies! ;]

I know we wont have this in vanilla Skyrim, (I think NPC companions are in though?) but I'm sure a mod or two will come along, as they always have. Though, none of them ever offered a bird of some type, sadly. But for some reason, I feel Skyrim would be perfect for an animal companion, more so than any past TES game. Maybe it's the Norse-like setting, I dunno. But I wants it!!

Anyway, thoughts? :]

P.S. as a general side note, I wasn't thinking about Fable when I made this poll (so much Fable hate on this forum haha). I'm just an old school fan of the Baldur's Gate series, where companions made up a good portion of the game experiences. However, due to the nature of TES games, having 4 or 5 humanoid companions doesn't feel right.. to me, anyway. It could to others though. But for me, having an animal companion feels fitting. Especially considering I always play as stealthy Ranger/Druid like characters. Animals go perfect with such classes. :]

Cats of all sorts, yeah they are so cool (put one in your backpack and teach it how to steal from the people you talk to).

Well, there is always Fable if you really really REALLY want a dog :P

I prefer walking alone or with a horse, not with a companion. That's never my type of characters, I always make them Assassins or Bards, that is, they're working alone and travelling most of the times, having someone else with them would be a liability for them :P Also, my Assassin's are Khajiits and my Bards are Wood Elves or Nords, Khajiits are beasts, Wood Elves are hated and Nords are just cold people, so yea... Alone or with my Horse is better :P Always better being alone for me though :P

Khajiit and Argonians don't need a cat for that, they have long tails :D

Plus, jokes about 'http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag.html,' could be good. ;]

Yes, a dog or wolf

I did like Dogmeat/Rex as dog companions.

Other. A unique Elder Scrolls creature would be the most interesting thing to have as a companion. It's such a cliche to have a dog companion, every game with companions seems to have one. I want something a little more unique.

Maybe summoned creatures stay with you until you dismiss them (dispel of some description) or they die. Maybe some balancing issues, perhaps special summoned creatures which are not combat orientated such as a will of the wisp type creature to act as a light.

Mages often have familiars that they summon..in DnD, anyway. I can see it working in TES though.

Also, as a general side note, I wasn't thinking about Fable when I made this poll. In fact, I'll edit my first post to clarify this..
