Animated Doors

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 3:39 am

I've done quite a few things when modding Oblivion but have never tried making a brand new animated door. My main use would be for secret passages and such. Are there any tutorials floating around? They don't have to be for anything super complicated. Just making a door swing open and closed would be great. I tried doing a search on the TES Wiki and didn't see anything that immediately jumped out to me. Any help?

Wouldn't it be possible to take already animated doors and replace NiTriStrip or something? I don't have knowledge of this so I'm just interested.

Someone on TES alliance forum made animated door for ayleid cage recently.

Would be nice to know which modeling program you're using.

http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Basic_Animation_Tutorial are the basics for Nifskope. For a simple door anim you don't need to make the animation in a modeling program, it's probably even faster if you do it in Nifskope.

http://forum.silgrad.com/thread.php?postid=165209 is a good one for 3ds max.

To expand slightly on Phitt's post. If the door is a separate and rigid object, and most doors would be, you can do it in NifSkope, and probably should, because it's simplest for the game engine, too. If the part you want to move is a section of an object, so you're deforming it, rather than just rotating it, you'd need a skeleton/armature and bone weighting, which is what the 3DS MAX tutorial covers.

Ah yes, sorry, I am using Blender. I will check out that wiki page. When I was searching I was searching for pages specific to door animation. Guess I should have included general animation pages haha. Thanks!

-edit-

@ghastley

Yeah I will just be doing simple stuff. I may get into more complicated stuff later but for now I am content with just making a door rotate or something along those lines.

Easiest method I have found is to just copy\paste your new door into an existing animated door model and the adjust the collision box to fit it and delete the original door (That is what I did for the animated Bookcase I made using Helbornes filled bookcase resource for a mod request awhile back (http://rapidshare.com/files/359030926/JDFanAnimatedHBDisplayCase.nif) also did pretty much the same for Khugan and his animated Coffin Lid (though on that one had to change the rotation Axis in the Nif also ! (http://rapidshare.com/files/359031909/kHUGANAnimatedCoffin03.nif ) - It could be used for a animated door on the floor or animated chest for example since it rotates on that axis. (feel free to use them as a base to copy\paste your model into for yours if you'd like !)

For doors to work properly in the game you need to name the animations Open and Close and then in game create them as a door object and the will then activate properly and give the correct activation icon in game.

If you have more questions on them just PM me or post here and I'll try to answer them for you.
