Animation slowdowns

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:08 am

Hey!

I'm having a strange problem with my current installation of Oblivion: sometime the mobs move in "slow motion." Once i engage them in combat -- especially if I do it at range, with bow or ranged spell -- they begin running toward me in slo-mo. This isn't a framerate problem, it has something to do with animation speed. Sometimes, once they've gotten to within a certain range of my character, they will suddenly speed up and charge me at an exaggerated speed. It doesn't happen in every fight, but it happens often enough to be annoying, and it also really takes the challenge out of the game when you can hit a creature with 10 arrows while it charges you.

I'm including my mod list for reference. I suspect it could be caused by Mart's Monster Mod:

. Bashed Patch tag suggestion: {{BASH:Scripts}}

Harvest [Flora] - Shivering Isles.esp

ScriptIcon_Replacer.esp

Quest Award Leveling.esp

Quest Award Leveling - Finger of the Mountain.esp

RealisticLeveling.esp

Mart's Monster Mod - Resized Races.esp
. Bashed Patch tag suggestion: {{BASH:Body-M,Body-F,R.Relations}}

bgMagicEV.esp
. Bashed Patch tag suggestion: {{BASH:Names,Delev,Relev}} if you are running more than one magic overhaul and want to use LAME spell names.
. Note: Move Supreme Magica after LAME if you want Supreme Magica spell stats.

bgMagicSpellTomes_for_WryeBash.esp

bgMagicItemSigil.esp

bgMagicEVStartspells.esp

bgMagicEVAddEnVar.esp
. Bashed Patch tag suggestion: {{BASH:Relev}}

bgMagicEVPaperChase.esp

bgMagicEVShader.esp

bgMagicShaderLifeDetect.esp

Enhanced Economy - Soulgems.esp
. Bashed Patch tag suggestion: {{BASH:Scripts,NoMerge}}

Only thing I know can slow time is Oblivion Stutter Remover. It does that when FPS is low. It's a togglable setting though. If you got that mod, that could be it.

Where are the rest of your MMM plugins? I could be sadly mistaken, but doesn't Resized Races have MMM.esm as a master?

I've change the "Allows slow motion" setting in OSR from 1 to 0. Let's see if that helps.

Thanks, hlvr!

Walker inShadows

Hmmm... if they don't show up in the list i posted, then they've been omitted for some reason. I have them in game. :)

You most likely have the "A-bomb" bug:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Technical_Support

Problem
After long periods of spending hundreds of hours of gameplay, flames (such as fire spells) don't extinguish, torches don't flicker or flicker very slowly, doors in catacombs fail to close or close very very slowly, and traps animate slowly as well. It reacts like the game is getting laggy, even with a high-end system, but many other things run at normal speed.
Cause
The Abomb bug.
Solution
Download a utility like Animation Fixer (very easy to use; only fixes this problem) or Wrye Bash (more complicated and requires installation of Python but has dozens of different functions) to fix your saved game file.

Use this to fix it (or Wrye Bash, instead):

IIRC, the A-bomb bug manifests in slow animations when say opening doors etc. Try the fix listed by Koniption above - maybe it affects NPCs as well.

Are you using any MMM spawn rate plugins? Maybe your CPU is getting overloaded with too many NPC AI routines?
Use Wrye Bash to post your load order. Learn http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=know_how_to#PostYourLoadOrder how to.

I don't think it's the A bomb... I tried hlvr's suggestion above, and it seems to be working so far. Haven't had the chance to do combat indoors yet, though.

Thanks for the tip regarding Wire Bash... I never knew that. Here's the current load order:

What I did basically was create OMODs for all the various mods and installed them with OBMM without worrying too much about load order and such. I was under the impression that OBMM figured all of that stuff out for me. Couple of exceptions, like Rens, I had to do manually. The game has worked pretty well except for the strange animation slowdown noted above and some rather frequent crashing. Some of the mods are shaded in red in Wyre Bash, however. These include Windfall, Arrow Enchanter, and Disease immunity. With regard to the last two, I'm wondering if maybe I only need to have one esp checked, or maybe the load order is wrong.

Thanks again for the help so far everyone. Muchly appreciated.

Definitely NOT the a-bomb bug.

OSR was probably the culprit, but your load order needs to be fixed. Get http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20516! OBMM doesn't do anything about load order except offer a convenient method to alter it yourself.

Mods with the text shaded red in Wrye Bash are mods that have the exact same date and time, which causes buggy behavior because the game doesn't know which one to load first. Mods that have a red checkbox are mods for which a master isn't present, which is a huge problem (Orange means the masters are out of order, which can still be a significant problem).

None of your actual mods look like they would cause a slowdown like what you described. I still think it was just OSR doing what it's supposed to do, but there is the possibility that load order issues are causing you problems.

If you boss your load order, be careful about overwriting saves. You may have to make a clean save and then re-add your mods to get your game working correctly again.

Had exactly the same bug once. Everyone in a town for example would seeminlgy stand still, but if you watched long enough youd see they where actually moving really slow. If you would get in a certain distance from them, they would move normally. The problem for me was a mod that added bell sounds and other ambience to the cities. I never knew why or what exactly caused it, but it occured after I installed the mod and stopped after I disabled it.You should disable your mods once after one in the order of last installed to first installed.

Well, I've had the opportunity to do some indoor combat now (boy howdy!) and it appears that since I stopped OSR from instigating slowdowns the problem has disappeared.

Thanks for the tip about the load order, that should be easy enough to fix. I shifted a couple of mods around as well and i've noticed that i'm crashing a bit less already.

Strange. I seem to have missed BOSS altogether. Will download it now.

Thanks again, all.

Edit: I seem to vaguely remember something about Wyre Bash and BOSS. Anyway, my version of Wyre Bash has a BOSS button, and when i pressed it, it reordered my mods! hehe. Now let's see if I can get the game to start.

In the Tweak Settings section of the Bashed Patch, there is an AI: Max Active Actors[25} this should be changed to [MMM Default 40} by right clicking on the bracketed number.Remember to place a checkmark in the box for this Tweak, and a checkmark in the box for the Tweak Settings section when you rebuild your Bashed Patch.

bradleyh,

How do I find these Tweak Settings?

You'll have to build a bashed patch for that.

bradleyh,

How do I find these Tweak Settings?

In the Wrye Bash Mods Tab, left click on the Bashed Patch,0.esp and it should bring up a list of options. Select the Rebuild Patch...
The Tweak settings option is in the bottom third of the left half of the Update Bashed Patch menu screen.

There's no Bashed Patch in your load list, so first you need to get the ESP out of the Bash Extras folder and put it in your data folder. Oblivion/Mopy/Extras/Bashed Patch, 0.esp >>> to Oblivion/Data

I don't know why Bash Patched doesn't show up in the list above, but I do have one in the list of mods when I open Wyre.

Thanks again everyone, you've been incredibly helpful. :)

I see the bashed patch, but I also see a bunch of other mods below it. Update and run BOSS so that these mods get sorted in the correct order.

Svinlesha try following the basics guide in my sig, seems like you are at a stage where it would be quite useful :)

The one on TESNexus has all the images in order they are in the pdf's if you dont want to download those.

I see you have the Bashed Patch, 0.esp at position 33 in your load order, maybe you have not selected to Update BOSS when it is run (you have to right click the mods header bar to enable the auto update of BOSS masterlist)

Also to get the Rebuild Bashed Patch you Right click the bashed patch (not left click)

All these points and more explained in sequence in the Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide. ( Good grief, I'm starting to sound like a TV commercial - Tune in next week for The Revenge of Wrye Bash :D )

Thanks again for all the help. I'll definitely look at your tutorial, alt3rnlty.

I hate to have to report that the problem has resurfaced. I've been looking at the various sorts of creatures that get slowed down, and I suspect they're all from MMM. A lot are obviously MMM; I had a cow run by me in slow motion earlier, which was rather strange. Undead and goblins are also particularly prone, as well as wolves and guard dogs. And rats.

Very strange bug indeed. It doesn't always happen but when it does, it's very annoying.

I'm going to go back and double check all the stuff that's already been suggested here, and take a look at the Wyre Bash tutorial.

Have you sorted your load with BOSS can you Repost that

Have you rebuilt your bashed patch ? following the suggested tag's in BOSS log. And select your mods that where listed under each section in bash patch has needed ?

Are you using High Rez Textures aka QTP, High Rez Body Textures, etc ?

Have you tried Quiet Feet Mod or the BASH has the options has well Quiet Feet to see if problem is not related to onboard sound ?

What are you system spec's ?

I've gone back to beginning and started with disabling slow motion in Oblivion Stutter remover -- I discovered that it was still set to 1 for some reason. Then I loaded up a game and went back to see if the cow was still running in slow motion (in my modded game there's a cow outside of Cheydihal). It wasn't. I'm pretty sure OSR is the culprit here, but we'll see.

That's a very nice and useful tutorial, btw. Only problem is I have a much older version of Bash -- version 2.75 to be exact. It doesn't quite have all the same functionality as the later version. I did move the Bashed Patch down to the last item on my list and rebuild it. I'm not sure how to merge mods with this earlier version however. RTFM I guess.

I'll be back later, after I've playtested a bit, to let everyone know if the problem has actually been solved or not.

Why don't you upgrade to the latest version of Bash? It is at v291 at the moment, and has a lot of improvements over v275!

antithinks: I probably will, now that I've discovered there's a new version! :)

Everyone else:

It seems like the advice from the second post in the thread has done the trick though: the problem was with OSR. I've played for a few hours since I changed the setting in OSR's ini and I haven't noticed any significant slowdown since I did. For future reference.

Thanks again for all the help, tips, and suggestions.
