Animations in Skyrim

Post » Sat Jun 25, 2011 4:50 am

Okay, yeah, we've seen the E3 demo and seen the running improvements, but do we know about anything else? I feel that the animations in Oblivion was a little disappointing. In Skyrim, we're to expect an improved 3rd-Person view - animations, playability and all. So, I really think that basically all acrobatics/athletics skills should look great, particularly jumping, with all the acrobatics enthusiasts.
I think animations should be dynamic according to the situation - Perhaps, according to the height of a jump, characters could be stunned, or if they have a high acrobatics level, execute a roll, sort of parkour-styled.
Most of all, I'd like to see smoothness between shifting of movement. When you're swimming and go in a different direction, there's no 'in-between' action, I'd like to feel that the environment (water, snow, etc.) has an effect on animation. Perhaps the PC has an animation as they push against waves, etc.

Maybe a little off-topic, and more related to skills, but... What would really be cool is pushing through deep snow and looking behind you and seeing a trench where you've been walking, however, if you have a high athletic or light armor skill, you can travel without snow trouble and walk on it. LOTR Cahadras nostalgia. Sorry.

Thoughts? Animation Ideas?

I'm going off to mourn.

Seriously, though, you get what I'm saying, right?
I've got a general idea about the skill clean-up. But, please explain to me, or link, we're all going to be running the same speed and jumping the same height? That sort of wrecks racial benefits for Khajiit, Bosmer and Argonian. And Maiq the Liar...

My main point was the animations. The skills were just an extension.

I assume there will be perks to affect it like they had in FO: NV...hopefully, but it doesnt really bug me that much. or maybe they'll have something in character creation to make yourself faster depending on certain choices or just due to speed...or the higher percentage of focused skills in the 6 stealth skills, the faster you go...I just hope there's something

I was wanting to play as an archer for the first play through and the removal of speed is horrible for me.

I think that snow, being a big part of our perspective of Skyrim, should have something to add to animation. I am fond of my idea of how hard snow makes travelling.

But, anyway, this thread is about animation...

I would like animations for switching weapons. If I use a big sword and then switch to a spell I'd like it not happening instantly like a miracle.

Bethesda hired new talents to make animation in Skyrim. After the FAIL animations in both oblivion and Fallout I hope the guy who made em got fired. They also have more people working on it as they said in an interview back in 2010.

nah, dont forget there are perks now, and running speed may have some sort of natural progression anyway, and could be tied to what body style you initially choose.

me too

DONT YOU EVER SAY THAT! nobody who has worked their ass off to get into this industry needs to be fired for no reason. there is a reason those animations look the way they do and its not the animators fault, its the game as a whole that is to blame. bethesda chose to make them that way.

I'd guess no. This ain't Minecraft. I don't think there'd be a system of nature growth, etc. I'd like to see a Battlefield-style destruction system in unimportant areas.
However, when a dragon crashes, there does seem to be some effect on terrain in the E3 demo.

As long as they make it so that when you're walking in third person, your legs actually face in the direction you're walking, instead of the ice skating you get in TES IV if you walk in a diagonal direction.

And as long as you have a shadow in first person

My current short list of disappointments in the Animation department:
- Wolves. Look Oblivion-esque.
- Rats. Look so cartoonish.
- Bats. Look 2D.

Definitely. I enjoyed the stances we've seen with the PC and Marauders. I've gotten so sick of Oblivion's stance. I'm wondering if different 'classes' (yeah, i know.) have different stances

Personally, I'm very satisfied with 3rd-person animation but quite dissatisfied with some 1st-person animations. Have you look at how the character swings his sword in 1st person? There is barely no motion there. Just the arm appearing and deseappearing to simulate movement. I'm so disappointed that Dark Messiah's animations still look worlds better than this even though this game is from 2006.

Really, my hope is that Bethesda improves those first-person sword swings in these last 5 months...

Has anyone watched that polish guy?

I don't like that rock.
With so much force, his arm should be off.
Did he hit that monster?
I don't think wolves' teeth are so long.
A few more polygons couldn't hurt.
I like Andre Sapjoekaajfnidnvkhczvsakski, We should use Witcher magic.
That fire should be a physical object.
I don't like the impact of the wolf upon his body.
They should turn this into an actual language.
I don't like the carrot. (roll the R)
Ahh.. Now this nirnroot looks beautiful.

About 50 mins of pure criticism. It's an art.

He's not ALL negative. He did complement the nice smooth circle on the stone things that give you stat learning speed boosts.

haha indeed

I love how they removed the god awful attribute system which did nothing but give me a headache, I mean is it possible for a person to run faster than the speed of sound??? (speed potion) I'm glad its all gone

now they can actually make a great magic/leveling system that rewards you with immediate progress
