Wow, this is some amazing work. You should make this a resume to Bethesda ;)

The nudity in Daggerfall seemed to be isolated to when your character is either; barging uninvited into strangers bedrooms, or visiting cults and temples where 'this sort of thing' is tolerated or celebrated. Can't you simply avoid these places (perhaps turning a blind eye to those within the lair of the King of Worms)? And would this mean removing Seducers, Nymphs and Lamias from the bestiary?

I think time should be spent adding features, not making Daggerfall as 'politically correct' as Oblivion. The 'low-quality' graphics of Daggerfall should reassure you that players won't be particularly interested in the nudity at any rate.

I would hope you concede that in reality, violence is vastly more horrific than nudity - although the latter is, I grant you, harder to justify within a game. But I don't think any of Daggerfalls nudity is gratuitous, which is the crux of the matter.

Agree totally. At least Daggerfall is more modest than certain common mods such as Better Bodies for Morrowind.

I always found nvde and six mods tastefully done in the Elder Scrolls. It wasnt untill they started to get much more free form with six possible during combat that things really got risque and even then it was pretty funny hearing a dark elf female holler, "Show me what you got! Har! Har!" in the.. heat of battle :D

I was bored, tired, and it was raining outside (which means nothing for me except that I may be a bit less regretful about not having the social life to go outside anyway), and I was looking around in Daggerfall Explorer, so I figured I'd play around a bit in Photoshop.

The below is (crappy distort skills FTW) a simple portrayal of what the interior of a basic home could look like through DaggerXL. The textures and sprites ingame are already higher resolution than the game's locked 320x200 resolution will ever let you come to realize, and for good measure I did some minor lighting/sharpen modifications.

It's nothing overly fancy, but I hope it's a spark for everyone's imagination as to just how much justice this project is doing to Daggerfall and the citizens of the Iliac Bay. The reference image can be found http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/904/fall008.png.

Looking forward to the upcoming Demo :)

I think you misunderstood what I'm trying to say. Childguard is an OPTION in Daggerfall that you can enable to remove nudity from the game. If you don't enable it, then you can still see nudity. This is what I'm talking about, not reworking the game to remove the nudity. So I'd like to see this same feature make it into DaggerXL.

I don't like nudity, and I also have a wife, and I wouldn't like to be fighting a nvde monster and my wife just enter the room and see it there. So if it's possible to render them invisible or better yet, replaced with a clothed version by enabling the childguard option, then I'd be happy.

That is exactly what I'm planning to do. The option will default to "off" so people can see the original content, unless they don't want to (and turn it "on").

The nudity in Daggerfall is practically a non-issue these days. To my recollection only Dark Seducers, Nymphs, and Lamias are the only monsters that show off "the goods". It's not done in a sixual manner, it's more tasteful than that. The nvde mods for Oblivion and Morrowind eventually lead to a sixual manner, but I doubt anybody would get their rocks off with the Daggerfall content.

I can see your point of view. However, I still don't like nudity, plain and simple. I don't care if it's tastefully done or not, it's still nudity. I'm sure some others that are like me and would appreciate the option of turning off those nudity.

Edit: Especially with DaggerXL being able to support higher resolution textures. I'm sure that quite a lot of textures will be upgraded, including those of the nvde women.

You never played God of War, The Witcher, or watched "300"?

No to all of the above. I don't want to derail this thread, I'm just glad that the creator's being willing to include the childguard feature. For those who want nudity in the game, you can get it. For those who don't want nudity, you can get that too. It's a win-win situation. So let's focus back on the awesomeness of DaggerXL

Yup, sorry about that.

On Topic: I checked the latest blog post and the engine looks great so far. Are you also going to make high res textures for the walls and stuff? I think I read earlier in the thread that you will have an option to disable the smoothing effect, and that's good since I'm not a big fan of texture filtering like that.

Anyways, keep up the good work and keep us posted! :)

Its like seeing DAGGERFALL for the very first time all shiney glittering in its newness blinding away with jaw dropping awe the jaggies of perception.

Something to keep in mind regarding this nudity debate is that all it takes to get rid of it is to swap out certain types of NPC sprites, a few enemies, and the character portrait. This isn't a major technological hurdle that's going to bog the project down. Just look at what lucius has pulled off in such a short time. If adding a feature to block controversial content means waiting until 8pm instead of 5pm for a demo release, or until Tuesday instead of Monday, I can live with that. Don't forget that not everyone who will play DaggerXL lives alone. Just because the content appears tame by today's standards doesn't mean it's suddenly appropriate for children to witness.

Glad to hear it :) I now recall the original childguard feature..

This is looking fantastic, great work!

But i do have a question.
From the screenshots you've posted, it looks like your Field of View is pretty extreme, like 70 degrees or more.
(i haven't watched the video yet as i am at work and don't have Java).
Are you keeping this Field of View, or are you going to crank this down a bit.

the childguard feature i think misses a couple of the nvde npcs though. i sort of remember a younger cousin playing with childguard on, and one of the temples still had the topless dancer (which is hardly tasteful ;) ), and he freaked out.

Since when is 70 an extreme FoV value? Why, back in the Quake days, we'd be usin' things like 110. Why, I remember one time I played stickball, I used 140! You whippersnappers, too dumb to process so much stuff so you turn down yer FoV...why...back in the war...zzzz...

(It seems correct to me - my complaint is the odd resolution at which the screenshots are posted (note the character sheet in particularly is too squashed). I assume he just scaled them for the blog though.)

Compare http://daggerxl.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/dxl_predemo6.jpg?w=510&h=382 to http://i25.tinypic.com/2hdn15i.png. It doesn't look too different.

I wondered is he imitating DF's FoV. And maybe he is.
But the thing is, with a clunky old XnGine running in DOS they just about get away with it.
Yet with a smooth new 3d engine, it looks positively telescopic.
