Announcing the Skyrim Fan Interview # 3

Post » Tue Jun 15, 2010 2:52 pm

Will Hand-To-Hand feature “finishing moves?"
Will Hand-To-Hand remain a skill?

Have you (Bethesda) considered giving magic “Finishing Moves?”

What’s really the difference between Magic and Dragon Shouts?

Regarding raising the dead, have you considered allowing players to command a spell that would raise a corpse to fight for (x) amount of time?

Will different weapon combos have different Finishing moves?

What was the whackiest Dragon Shout idea that was brought up in a discussion?

How will the Smithing skill be handled?
How will the Alchemy skill be handled?
How will the Enchanting skill be handled?

Will the Lock Picking Mini-game return?
Will any mini-games return?

Within cities, will there be large, public, festive events?

Will there be public competitions that the player can attempt to win in?

Being that this is now 3 threads I doubt I have a chance to get it answered, but my question is probably a little different:

"As far as shadows go will there be dynamic shadows everywhere you look (gradually degrading in quality over distance) or will there be a
radius for them (around the player) and beyond that will we have baked or no shadows at all?"

Thank you.

While I more than likely have about a trillion different questions regarding this game, I'm only going to ask one or two, really, as not to take up too much space, and also to reduce the possibility of me repeating what others have asked, albeit in slightly different fashions.

One of my main concerns is fast travel. I loved in Morrowind how Silt Striders, Mage's Guild Teleporters, Boats, etc... Would take you to and from Major City's and Towns, however that your map did not allow you to simply look at a place that you've been to before, and teleport there.

Not only WAS that game exceptionally massive, and still to this day, my favourite game of all time, but the fact that you needed to actually journey to these areas and find your own path made it seem even larger. Added on top of that, in my opinion, a lot of what made that game so amazing was what you could find on your trip to your destination, which is a seemingly endless wealth of side-quests, treasures, caves, tombs, and new areas of interest that you might have simply skipped over had you teleported to the nearest place you've been to beforehand, in conjunction to your actual destination.

So, my main question is, will there be fast travel in this game, and if so, how will it be implemented? Will it be more like Oblivion, or Morrowind, in the end?

Also, for whatever reason, I feel that while the game chain was massively upgraded in terms of graphics to go along with this wave of consoles, I also feel as though there was a lot less detail put into it in terms of history and questing in general. In Morrowind, any single book that you picked up off of a shelf, of which there seemed to be thousands, could lead you on an elaborate side quest that you never would have heard of otherwise, or could tell you a vast amount of information and history regarding the game world itself. Any random small little cave that you went into might hold a mythical item that you otherwise might have simply passed by had you not entered the area, that you might be able to give to the museum in Mournhold.

Essentially, in my personal opinion, it seemed like the sheer amount of detail in that sense specifically was diminished when the game chain went from Morrowind to Oblivion, while the overall accessibility and graphics were more-so focused on.

So, my second question would be somewhat vague, but generally asking if you would be bringing back that immense level of detail like there seemingly was in Morrowind, or if you're going to leave it more-so like it was in Oblivion.

Thanks for reading this over, and possibly answering any of these questions that I have.

- R

(EDIT):

Sorry, last one, very brief.

Will you be fixing the rain already? Ever since Morrowind, I've noticed, when I look up when it's raining, and I'm outdoors, regardless of whether or not I'm standing underneath of something, the rain seemingly falls THROUGH that object, and onto me. I was amazed that you somehow managed to overlook this simple bug and put it in Oblivion as well, not that it's exactly a game breaking issue, but it's still a bit off-putting, and it doesn't seem like it would be an entirely hard thing to fix either... But what do I know, really. Just wondering.

Thanks again.

Is Night-Eye/Eye of Night (should it return) blue like Oblivion, green like Morrowind, or an altogether new color?

A few questions that I'm wondering about:

1. Mounted Combat?
- Will we actually be able to use the mounts for something other than riding from fast travel point to destination?

2. Daedric Lords and the Nine Divines?
- Will the player be able to experience Elder Scrolls lore while exploring, or only while questing during the main storyline? Also, are the planned dungeons the only ones in game, or will there be randomly generated dungeons in addition to the major ones?

3. City Guards and Bounties?
- How will bounties and city guards work in Skyrim?

4. Guilds?
- Are there any plans to revive feuding guilds, i.e. the Great Houses of Morrowind, or will the player be able to join any guild as in Oblivion?

5. Books?
- What kind of books will be making an appearance in game, and will there continue to be "rare" books that exist?

6. Food?
- Will food do anything other than be cheap ingredients for potions? Will we see a MGS3 style stamina system or anything similar?

7. Skill Ups?
- Will completing various tasks within a certain skill reward the same amount of skill experience? For example, in Alchemy, will creating a cheap health potion reward the same amount of skill experience as creating an uBeR poTIOn of InvISibILity and six?

8. Crafting and Legendary Weapons?
- Are there any plans on re-introducing a longer list of Legendary Artifacts to find as in Morrowind, or will there be a larger focus on crafting, or neither?

9. Vampires and Werewolves
- Will we see vampires again, and/or a revival of Bloodmoon's werewolf concept?

The questions will be answered on the blog and in a new forum thread in a few weeks, just like Gstaff said in the first post and like they have done for Brink, Fallout, and all their other games.

1: Will the Labyrinthian be in the game as an "Ultimate Dungon"? If so, will it have the Arena layout, or will it be revamped and modernised on the Creation Engine?

2: Can you give any information on the Mages Guild split and the new factions that rose from its ashes?

3: Is any information on the civil war available at this time?

Thanks for all the amazing games Bethesda!

Firstly thank you for this opportunity. Secondly, I didn't have time to read everything from all three threads, so I'm sorry if I as something that has been asked before.

My question is: How will fatigue be different this time around? You've said you give the choice of raising health, magica or fatigue, but if fatigue is similar to the system used in Oblivion... Well... There would be no reason to choose it. Ever.

Another question I have is about spells. I've seen in multiple interviews and things, that different presses of the button (Tapping/Pressing/Holding/etc.) will cause different spell effects. I can see how this would work with destruction magic, but how (if at all) will it be implemented with something like say... Invisibility? Or just anything you can tell me about the different things it can do with other spells outside the school of destruction.

My final question is about dragon shouts. Obviously every character is "Dragonborn", but not every character will be playing the same way. The question is: Will dragon shouts support all types of characters? Are there long ranged shouts? Some kind of stealthy "shout"? Perhaps a shout that adds strength or speed to your attacks?

I posted a question on thread one but another one came to mind (sorry if its been asked before)

What will the third person view look like? Will it be centered like in Morrowind and Oblivion, or will it be an over the shoulder view?

By the way, keep up the good work guys! :tes:

Will there be any sort of disguise system improved on what there was in Fallout: New Vegas where you can infiltrate various areas, or even infiltrate for questing reasons? If so, one issue I had with that is that if you put on a disguise in front of someone who is of an opposing faction to the faction you're disguising yourself as, they'll immediately become hostile towards you, regardless of how your reputation was with them.

EDIT: Another question I just thought of, that I don't remember if was brought up or not. Will there be bounty hunters? As in if you had a high bounty due to your criminal activities, will NPC bounty hunters hunt you down to claim the bounty similar to the guards, but track you down more so. Also will you be able to act as a bounty hunter, hunt down NPCs who themselves have committed bounty worthy crimes to give them a bounty? Would definitely be a nice way to make some extra gold, though not that I think of it, the random occurring Radiant AI quests may already be similar enough to this whole player being a bounty hunter.

Also, will there be mudcrabs in Skyrim or something of similar nature? I want the people of Skyrim to insult my combat skills saying they've fought mudcrabs tougher than me, as I kill them.

Will we still be able to slay dragons after we finish the Main Quest?

Only because it hasn't been said in a while, Armor slots and customization. Is it like Morrowind's?

And will the Dunmer sound like their old selves again?

1. Will there be a more factions in Skyrim? (Something like the number in Morrowind, as opposed to Oblivion). It would be interesting to see several kingdoms, not unlike the Great Houses of Morrowind, which you can choose between. Or even play multiple sides for your own gain. In addition to a return of the three core guilds, though not necessarily the familiar Fighters, Mages, and Thieves guilds. Rival mercenary guilds, wizards guilds, and bandit gangs would be very interesting.

Will we be seeing any of these things? Something like that? The greatest thing about the elder scrolls games (moreso Morrwind than Oblivion), in my opinion, was that you had lots of extra content away from the main quest and you could go months without doing a single part of the main quest and never be bored.

2. I am concerned that the roaming dragon attacks will force the player to pursue the main quest from early on, or watch beloved NPCs die in the jaws of a dragon as it wanders by and burns a village. Are these concerns warranted? There are few things that turn me off to a game more than feeling like I am being forced in one direction when it doesn't make any sense (hence why I play YOUR rpgs instead of Final Fantasy games). Will my siblings and I have to worry about that?

Given the series past history, and the controversy surrounding Oblivion, and the possibility of an M rating, has there been any discussion concerning nudity in Skyrim?

What’s really the difference between Magic and Dragon Shouts?

Magic is something that can be preformed by anyone, and has different effects. Also I would assume shouts will support every character type rather than just mages or characters who use magic. Every character is dragonborn, not every character is a mage/spellsword etc

I've got one:

If you could get rid of one "thing" (very general/broad) in the game, what would it be?

And no your answer can't be any of the things you've already taken away since Oblivion.

Will we be seeing cloaks, capes, and other draping articles of clothing with physics? Waking around in a robe that looks as if it was drenched with fabric stiffener is soooo 2005.

My only question:

I felt the writing was the weakest link in your last two games, and really broke the excellent immersion the world created every time I spoke with someone. Will more effort be put into the writing of Skyrim than Oblivion or Fallout 3?

Will Skyrim be using the bigger capacity Xbox 360 discs that are coming out? I'll be playing on PC but it's still relevant to me since it's a multiplatform game. :D

Seconded. Wish I'd asked this.

I've been pretty critical of Skyrim thus far, mainly because I don't want to be disappointed. However, don't let me disappoint you guys, I am really looking forward to it.

Can we have a thread where we can just offer praise to the developers?
Can I buy beers for the team who decided against using the porcupine arrow system again?

On a more serious note

Sorry if this question is repetitious, haven't read the thread completely:
I felt that more attention was put into Morrowind's game world than Oblivion's, because almost every quest was completable using only clues from NPC dialog. Does Skyrim include quest related dialog that allows us to complete the game without relying on quest targets?

Do the NPCS tend more to Oblivion or to Morrowind? Morrowind NPCs were interesting and would talk to you until the cows come home about multiple different topics (even if they'd have the same thing to say as their neighbours), INCLUDING important facts about not only their home town, but things to do in the region and their points of view on various happenings around the place, as well as useful information about quests. Oblivion's NPCs were bland and boring to talk to.

Can the AI sort out the player-induced problems in their schedules? Or will they follow this reasoning: I am supposed to train here using my bow. I don't have a bow. I could buy a new bow. I have enough money. The shop is across the road. Ergo I will stand here and look at target. I am supposed to go and eat in the pub. I am walking past the bow shop. I am entering the pub. I am supposed to go and train with my bow. I am leaving the pub. I am walking past the bow shop. I am supposed to train here using my bow. ad infinitum.

Will Skyrim be awesome?
