*Annoyed and Confused*

Post » Wed Aug 11, 2010 11:00 pm

I'm not in the mood to scour the internet for answers anymore.

I recently got Oblivion for my PC (Woot!) and the first thing I wanted to to was download some of the Argonian appearance mods out there. My brother showed me (And forced me to get a whole bushel of other mods) how to get the mods set up and working, however I downloaded the Argonian-Beautification, and to be honest, the installation instructions in the readme make no sense. No offense to the creators, I know they're users on this forum but it says to use folders and files that aren't even included in the mod itself. I'm not sure if I got the wrong versions (I downloaded a few different versions from different sources, all were the same pretty much) or something but I am just completely and utterly confused.
So I decided to experiment with them and the results weren't very good, although promising. The first attempt only made my Argonian character's eye's disappear. Really, just vanish -- I could see the back a the wall through his eyes. The second attempt I manage to get the claws and spiked-tail from Solf's Better Beasts to work, although I didn't want that. What I mainly would like to use is Solf's spiked tail, JdayT (Not sure if thats right) scripted feet and the new textures for Argonians.

I have the appropriate requirements, I think, for the mod but for some reason it's just not working the way I want.

Fine, since no one will help me with the original problem, can someone at least spare a few seconds and tell me how to get Jaydt's scripted argonian feet to work?

EDIT: Alright, I got the feet working, but the legs have disappeared and there's this annoying bump that sounds off every few seconds.

Hey, two hours is not all that long to wait for help on a forum. Chances are, no one that's on at the moment used the mods you're talking about and so can't offer help. Hang in there.

In the meantime, you might want to read through the stickied threads at the top of the main forum page, especially Mods FAQ and Compatibility and You.

agreed. Sometimes it takes me a day or more to get a response for help I need.
Though I do not use the mod, I do recommend you try a few things:
1) Not that I am saying you have not done this, but, I highly recommend reading and re-reading the readme in detail. Especially if there are multiple folders and file paths that have not be set correctly, then more than likely the readme will explain what to do with those.
2)you may need to make the folders yourself. I have had several mods that come poorly packaged or - due to other complicated reasons - just required you to make the folder path yourself. If the files are missing, i also suggest removing your copies of the mod, and redownload only the latest version of the mod. If again the files do not come with the mod, then post the names of the files that are mentioned in the readme. They may be files from other important mods.

I only bumped it because it was about to go into the second page and probably never get heard from again.

And I'll go through those threads asap, as soon as I fix a damn texture problem. I might have screwed myself over... again.

Chill, wait until you go past the third page to bump, some people on this forum read through the first 10 pages for anything interesting.

Now have you ever installed a mod before? This isn't as simple as press a button and get over with it you know, you need to understand how the folders are structured and what goes where. I'm not going to explain any more because all of this is in the stickied threads at the top.

I've never used Argonian Beautification, but they come with OMOD conversion data so the easiest way to install them is via OBMM. They come with different meshes to choose between so a manual install is a bit more involved - seems to be described in the readme, though.

Actually I went through both of them thrice. Lots of useful data there, let me tell you :P

I got a good portions of the problems fixed and got some new stuff working fine. Of course, it's just the small problem of correctly applying the scripted argonian feet and scale textures that's still trying to rebel against me. I'll keep experimenting with OBMM.

Off-Topic: Umpra & Seph Dance plugins are soooo much fun.

Give me some time to wake up and check for threads regarding my work. I'm in Germany, so it's 9 o'clock here now and I have some roof-workers in the attic...
"Second page", pah! My threads usually go down to 10th or below and are still answered. There's some neat functionality telling us which threads we haven't seen yet, and believe me the ones who are going to help questioners are going as far down as they have to anyways.

Oh, well, AB doesn't come with an ESP on its own, so there's no way it could have screwed up your eyes, that's not part of it.
However, some of its requirements easily can do that, when not installed or used properly.

You're right, the installation instructions really are a pain, no offense taken. I wish I would have time and equipment to rectifiy all these things, but one or the other is always missing lately.
The recently added BAIN-compatible archives (v3.0 intermediate update releases) helped a lot in improving this, but I didn't even get around to give this treatment to all archives there are already.
The thing is, all components are "optional", so I designed the archives in a way they won't replace anything by default but you need to do certain copy&paste steps to achieve this effect. Unfortunately this turned out to be a bad decision of myself. Most people don't like having to do anything to get a mod working, apart from putting it all into the "data" folder and forgetting about it. But with Argonian Beautification this simply isn't possible. As soon as I make features install by default there will be other people complaining that I did so.

I'm not using any special fancy folders from other mods which possibly won't be present though. The only folders which could be missing would be the "meshes" and "textures" folders altogether. However, even in this case the whole complete folder structure is inside my archives. Unpacking them will create these folders when they're not present already.

You decide about the features you want mainly by using the proper requirements already. AB consists only of "replacement" resources. Without the mods the contents of which I'm replacing nothing will happen of course. Previously I blatantly expected said requirements to be working properly already on the users' computers before even attempting to use AB (having to re-install something after AB because a requirement wasn't installed properly before will of course undo everything from AB again). But this was a very bad idea as well, considering how much time I spent helping others to diagnose issues with or install contents of mods that weren't even made by me since the release of my AB. Not that I'm complaining or anything. I always "love" to help until all issues are finally dealt with and everything's working to an enjoyable experience. Let's just say I lost some of my initial ignorance from when starting to release my creations.

Now, for the spiked tails from Slof's Better Beasts (it's actually impossible to get these without the claws, if that's one of your complaints, due to design of the original mod) you of course need to have Slof's Better Beasts installed and working and then install AB to replace its files. The plugin is a little difficult to use right, because it's stated to be for Robert's Male and Robert's Female only now yet it somehow still contains the racial settings for Team Fantasy Figures bodies, thus it can mess up the Khajiit when in absolute control of the racial settings. I designed AB's files to work under these exact conditions, no matter what bodies you're actually using. That's why this plugin more or less is required. However, due to it not being available for quite a long time I released my little AB Requirements package containing only a supplementary plugin with proper racial settings for Argonians as required by AB and the claw textures with Slof's permission. Nowadays this one can also be used when you're not using Robert's Female to not mess up your Khajiit, because it doesn't contain any changes to Khajiit in the first place.

The key to success with body mods, racial mods and cosmetic mods is in the end having only 1 plugin which controls everything. In the ideal case this would be the bashed patch from Wrye Bash, using proper bash tags and proper load/merge/import order. But there are still people not using this invaluable tool, so those will have to create one single merged plugin themselves or suffer the consequences of not doing so.

As for my Scripted Argonian Feet, are you using the required body mods, Robert's Male Body and Team Fantasy Figures female bodies? If not, such things like disappearing bodyparts can happen when you're attempting to use a non-TFF/Robert's texture on a TFF/Robert's body mesh.
Regarding this thumping sound, that's the "casting" sound of a Scripted Effect spell. I'm using an area-of-effect spell to spread my race control tokens into actors' inventories.
You'll need a Script Effect Silencer to, well, silence it. Duke Patrick made a common stand-alone one. Supreme Magicka, Midas Magic and maybe even the UOP contain one as well. The thing is using more than 1 at once they can nullify each others' effects, and load order is vital as well or a later-loading mod might revert the thumping back to normal. That's also why I never will make and include my own one. It's just too much shouting for conflicts.

Return to IV - Oblivion
