Annoying bug: permanent glowing eyes glitch

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 2:38 am

Hey, I'm currently experiencing this ridiculously annoying bug, borderline game breaking, where my character has a permanent "glowing eyes" effect. You might argue it's not game breaking for you, but for someone that plays the game in 3rd person and has to see a trail of glowing orbs following your characters head 24/7, makes me want to not play it at all. I know it's caused by the shout, "Aura's Whisper", because in one save it wasn't happening, and right when I got the shout and started using it the bug appeared. I also researched this topic on google and on this forum, (noticing that bethesda doesn't care at all to look in to it btw). Here's a screen shot of this bug happening in game: http://i41.tinypic.com/2cdisxt.jpg

A few things, I have no mods installed, I play the game in ultra so it probably isn't my computer's fault, and it isn't just happening to me, google "glowing eyes bug" if you don't believe me. Please notice this bethesda, for the sake of the nine divines, notice this and fix it. I know it doesn't seem like much, but I can't play the game in 1st person, it's impossible, all the elder scrolls games I've played in were in 3rd person. I also don't play fps games so it gives me a weird feeling when looking at things up close and two feet from your head. Thanks for reading this.

Sorry about your situation, but c'mon, don't use the phrase 'game breaking' to describe a 'terribly annoying cosmetic problem'.

I'm not sure what to recommend, have you tried using other shader-heavy effects to see if you can replace the glowing with some non-permanent effect.

Have you tried 'showracemenu' in the console to see if the effect sticks there (be careful with that btw). Maybe put on a face-obscuring helmet, save and quit, then come back and take the helmet off - maybe it will re-load your head right after that (dwarven helmet, wooden mask).

good luck

This is about as game breaking as the game actually running perfectly.

Try this.
Start the game and hit the '~' key. Then type 'showracemenu'.

Try to mess with the eye type slider or change the six so it can load a different model and maybe refresh the male model so he won't have the glowing eyes.

Thanks for the replies people, sorry I came off as a jerk. Also, I am experiencing hard crashes every 10 minutes as well, the glowing eyes thing isn't my only problem.

To everyone that actually tried to help, the 'showracemenu' idea did not work. However, to those that might google this later or something, I did find a temporary fix. Press ~ and type, 'sixchange', press enter. Press the up arrow or just type in 'sixchange' again to return to your previous self. This fix works until you go in first person or load a previous save, hope it helps.

The sixchange works so long as you don't switch to first person, hope that helps abit. Personally I'll have to content with it and play in first person all the time, and it is game breaking for me as It kind of ruins the immersion every time I see my character.

Yeah that's the same problem I have, it's not so bad as long as I do the sixchange fix every time I load a save.

This particular immersion breaking visual issue, along w/the frosty feet glitch, has my highest level toon on hold til it can be fixed, as I played for days trying to put up w/it before getting sick of it, so it's too far back to be worth replaying.

Now that the CK is out I'm hunting for the code for the specific effect. HArd to wade through that thing tho, as it is not quite the same as prior ES games.

And now a bit of a rant:

To all who say it isn't game breaking:

Try setting your gfx to 800x600 and playing that way. See if you like it. By your own logic, you should not mind, and if you do then you are hypocrites. Stop slamming people who find a visually-based game to be broken when the visuals very obtrusively don't work. It's called a VIDEO game for a reason. I paid for a good game and I expect one. Otherwise I'd have stuck with Morrowind. Or just finished Witcher so I can finally get to playing Witcher 2.

For glowing eyes caused by Aura Whisper the following worked for me:

Open console with the tilde key (~)
Type "player.addspell f71d1" without the quotes
Close the console with the tilde key (~)
Wait a moment..
Open console again
Type "player.removespell f71d1" without the quotes
Close the console

Hope this helps

For glowing eyes caused by Aura Whisper

As I recall, in the http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1265272-glowing-eyes-bug/page__st__90__p__20284700__hl__glowing%20eyes%20bug__fromsearch__1#entry20284700, it was suspected that Aura Whisper was the catalyst, yet no evidence or reproducible steps were provided to confirm this. I have only encountered this bug once before and it was after visiting a draugr crypt in association with a particular quest. Replaying the encounter from a previous save did not reproduce the bug. I used Aura Whisper in both cases and indeed have used it often and have not encountered this problem again since.

Thanks for linking to the other thread.

When I had this issue, I read about the fix, proceeded to fix my character, then repeatedly cast Aura Whisper, which reproduced the bug. I had noticed the problem after fighting some draugr (can't recall where) however was not fighting draugr when the problem recurred.

The one and only time I ever encountered this was immediately after clearing
Spoiler
http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Folgunthuras part of the Gauldur Legend quest. This involved fighting http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Mikrul_Gauldurson, a draugr that possesses unique items and abilities.
I should note that I encountered this under 1.3.10. I recently played through this quest on 1.4.21 and did not encounter the bug.

This "DraugrMagic" removal you listed fixed it for me! Many thanks! To coin a Crystal Gayle song: "Don't it make my aquamarine eyes blue (again)!" Now my toon can go back to killing all in sight with no distractions!

I tried using Aura Whisper after, to test, and the problem did not recur. Either a combo of factors was involved, or the game somehow jumps effects randomly from actor to actor.

I suspect actor objects are barely distinguished from each other, in some sort of "floating point" manner, with interaction (i.e. combat) causing the actors' respective objects to merge temporarily, with occasional after-effects if the game cannot then sort out who was who after the interaction finishes. OFC, I didn't code the game and don't know how it works, but it's a guess. Game has issues distinguishing variables between saves too, with elements bleeding into a quickload from an unsaved game: ES V uses a lot of fuzzy logic (although my guess may be fuzzier logic)!
