Annoying falling in oblivion. What about Skyrim

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 3:14 am

I would hope it would be somewhat similar to Red Dead Redemption. The Euphoria system handles animation and gravity very realistically. When you do decide to run down stairs, you run sort of sideways, and it is slower than a full run, but still much quicker than walking them.

Yep, that would work. I don't know if Gambryo had that capability though. And, of course, we have no solid idea what the updated engine can do at the moment.

The whole Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon jumping was really useful in Oblivion though... But get rid of it anyway. :turned:

I think it'll look better. It's already (apparently) confirmed that there will be better hiking/climbing animations, and with the new engine, I think that means we'll probably also see an improvement in jumping/falling animations.

In Morrowind, I remember running down stairs and not shooting off the face of the...Nirn?

In oblivion when you went down stars or a steap hill, you would go off the ledge and fall as if it were low gravity.I found that annoying,I'm just hoping that they cleaned that up.it's going to look ridiculus if they don't.Anyone else agree

Ok then, you go to the top of some stair, run at it full speed and see if you go down them normally. you wont because your going too fast

Yep, that happens when you're running. That's why my mother always yelled at me for running down the stairs.

I don't think there's any fixing to be done. If you run full stride down a flight of stairs, you will miss most of them and end up a crumpled heap at the bottom. The answer for me has been to walk.

Are you serious? You've never run down stairs? You dont fly off them I've done it plenty, you hop quickly from step to step, even skipping steps. I tried to find a youtube video of someone running down stairs but was unable to. Perhaps someone else can - here's the best I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piu_jVwzgTo LOL

I agree this is more of an engine thing and was never really bethesdas fault. Gamebryo never really addressed stairs though and as a result it was just handled like a cliff or something.

Try running down stairs using a 5 or 6 foot stride like you do on level ground....actually, don't. But that's the only run animation in Oblivion seemed to be capable of.

You don't fall downstairs unless your are paralysis or you died on the stairs. Look at the stairs at Crucible at the way to the palace they are steep. Unless you have low agility or fatigue you maybe do fall in those stairs. I don't know about the others but for I fly through those stairs when going down and hurt my character a little bit. I let my character jump off them right down to the bottom of Crucible. That is a 6 story jump. Why I do that because of acrobatics skills.

With hills its different they are very steep and one false move you do slide down into oblivion.

But maybe it is lower gravity on Nirn?

Then maybe everyone should grow 10ft tall?

It would be dumb that way.
If you want something that will give you an immersion, then you want to have a normal gravity for starters.

I do hope they fix the physics. I understand the issue OP is talking about. What was worse though was being able to float up the steps.

yeah, i can imagine "falling" down high hrothgar
but if im not entierly inaccurate Skyrim is going to use the havok physics engine, wich would be really good to eliminate this problem.

Did you even read the persons post you replied to?? I heard them say maybe the gravity. They said maybe the gravity is lower on Nirn, and even seemed sarcastic. It wasnt a suggestion for something they should do.

But then again you mention immersion so that explains alot.
Here are my ideas for Immersion.

You must sleep 8 hours per day, and work 8 hours per day, behind a desk in an office.
You have to eat three meals a day.
When you die, the Elder Scrolls game disc bursts into flames. Once you die the game is over, and you have to purhcase it again.
If you dont drink water, you die.
You cannot save the game.
There are no menus. You dont know what your health is, or magicka, or anything for that matter.
You can get cancer and other diseases. Again, if you die, the game explodes. Better hope you have good genetics.

Now that sounds like a immersion fest. It sounds like it would be so immersing I could just be immersed for days on end. I would love to immerse myself in a game all day while immersing myself in immersion goo. Immerse immerse immerse. Do you guys get it? I want the game to be like real life, like immersion. I just want to immerse myself all day long in Skyrim. Immerse.

LOL.

All NPCs and Quest givers can also contract diseases or be otherwise killed. Dont feel like doing those un realistic main quest missions? Kill the main characters and destroy the quest before it begins.

You have to file/pay taxes every game year (every 5 minutes real life)

If you marry and get divorced, your wife takes half your money from any future quests completed. Add children? 75 percent of future quests earnings.

If you break the law, you go to jail and serve the literal sentence. A 20 year sentence takes 20 years in real life.

NPC criminals will break into your house and steal any belongings stored there. They will also mug, attack, and kill you.

You can only get hit with a sword/spell/arrow once, and then you die. Keep in mind the game will burst to flames.

Well I understand that it is entirely possible to run off a set of stairs but your post made it sound like the only alternative was to walk! :) Running down stairs is a different motion and thus, requires a different animation. It requires the game engine either detect the geometry of a stair-like object or to have such an object defined as a stair when the model is loaded into the game and to play this animation when you run down or up them.

When we run down steep slopes or stairs in real life all we have to do is shorten our strides in order to spread the fall out to mere inches per step. If we have a hill 20' long and 10' tall, a (rather large) person taking 10' strides will have to fall 5' per stride in order to make it down the hill. If this person shortens their stride to 1' per stride they will only have to fall 6" per stride, much more managable! The speed you can take these strides is only really dictated by your leg muscles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIHRH-fqI2E

Now if we re-enacted that in oblivion, we'd have flown off that cliff easily.

This is obviously an issue, the hills don't even have to be very steep and to avoid taking damage you have to move your character backwards when He floats which is really ridiculous. and on a very steep hill... forwards backwards forwards backwards forwards backwards :cryvaultboy:
