Annoying falling in oblivion. What about Skyrim

Post » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:57 pm

In oblivion when you went down stars or a steap hill, you would go off the ledge and fall as if it were low gravity.I found that annoying,I'm just hoping that they cleaned that up.it's going to look ridiculus if they don't.Anyone else agree

I don't really recall that happening in Oblivion. Going down stairs? Low gravity?
I remember a terrible physics engine when it came to falling, that's about it. I hope that's improved on in Skyrim.

It's kinda hard to discribe, just run down a set of stairs in oblivion and you'll fall down the stairs, just do that and you'll see what i'm talking about.

I agree that you should actually be walking up/down stairs. It always annoyed me that they were just ramps in Oblivion.

Yep, that happens when you're running. That's why my mother always yelled at me for running down the stairs.

They would have to slow you down or use different animations. I guess we have to take it easy downhill.

I get what you mean, as you run your character ends up flying a bit, I too have been wondering if this has been fixed in Skyrim, I hope so as it's really annoyed me in Oblivion and Morrowind a lot.

I don't think there's any fixing to be done. If you run full stride down a flight of stairs, you will miss most of them and end up a crumpled heap at the bottom. The answer for me has been to walk.

The faster you go up or down stairs, the less energy you use! It's just efficient!

Ugh, I know what you are talking about.
That whole low gravity thing in TES series is killing me.
Same is when you are running down the hill.
Make a faster movement and before you know it, you'll end up as Skywalker wannabe and realize that you are not one by having your legs broken upon falling down.
I mean, it's true that it's not that realistic to run down the hill since you will probably end up with you neck between you knees by the time you reach bottom, but low gravity thing is not the answer that's for sure.

The thing is that you skip few stairs, not start levitating above them.
I used to run down the stairs a lot and my legs are still fine.
At least better acrobats should be able to run down 10-15 or so stairs and be fine or something like that.

Ugl, I also remember times when you run down the stairs in some dungeon and then low gravity kicks in.
You end up running in the sealing or something like that.
Really annoying in my opinion.
Down have anything about your character being clumsy and breaking few bones if he runs down the stairs, but that whole low gravity thing should be fixed in my opinion.

I say turn on the ragdoll effect and simply make your character go tumbling down the stairs, hill, etc, just like they would in real life!

It is possible to jump down stairs, not only three-six steps but 10 steps, but that would require jumping. In Oblivion, I could easily run straight down any and all stairs and hit the bottom in slow-mo, without jumping. If we do that in Skyrim, without jumping, we could get seriously hurt. That would add in some tactical aspect if being chased by someone, if you are a khajiit you could easily jump down 20 steps and land without hurting yourself so much, meaning that your pursuers would be slowed down because they need to semi-run down the stairs. But please BGS, no more epic slow mo :)

Oblivion falling is damn much better than morrowind. Once i jumped to clear a small gap, slid down a 30 foot slope and died, all while in the jumping animation. Not to mention getting stuck on 80% of world geometry.
The problem with stairs is pretty much unsolvable without a specific walking/running up/down stairs animation. Has there been any game that succeeded in this without them?
But I agree the Looney Tunes run forward a few feet before gravity starts pulling you down is a bit annoying.

I absolutely agree. Oblivion's physics were okay, but off by just enough that it irked me. The falling traps looked were more like feathers falling than giant blocks of wood. Everything exploding off the tables. Your character fell really lightly as well. It was all surreal.

Running down the stairs in Oblivion is absolutely fine, the real problem is that there is no tripping. That's why it looks off.

That bothered me about Oblivion generally. The whole gravity system was way off. A novice character could pull off Michael Jordan leaps with no problem. By the time your acrobatics was high, you could leap over small buildings.

That's just... silly.

I don't have a problem with getting some air if you run full speed down stairs or a hill. That happens in the real world. However, gravity needs to be forceful and show you what a fall is actually like. Bring the player down fast and hard and land in a heap. With high acrobatics, you stay on your feet.

Also, I'd like to see objects having some mass. I hated the way those massive hammer traps would fall from the ceiling and just dangle around like a ping pong ball on a rope. I want to see them swing with weight, and knock some stuff around. When they smash into you, you should get thrown back. They were too easy to grab and move, too. No real feeling of mass or weight.

Stronger gravity! More weight to objects! Yay.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about. Damage occured at 10 ft drops and, was extreme! I used to primarily travel by hopping around. This was partly because I wanted to raise acrobatics, and partly because it at least felt faster than running.

Part of the problem was that when Acrobatics got higher, you could practically jump down a mountain and clear it in one easy hop. I personally didnt mind this, unrealistic as it may be. Could defenitely be toned down a little bit.

The other reason this was annoying, was the extreme amount of damage that occured from doing this. You would lose practically 25 percent of your health by jumping down a small hill. 75 percent if you pushed your luck. That I didnt care for.

But to answer OP, I agree and would like some method to adjust the jumping height/damage taken from doing so.

it looks like gravity maybe much more improved in Skyrim, or so it looks so in the trailer when the dragon is hit and falls to the ground on a heavy impact.

So maybe gravity is slightly smaller on Nirn than on Earth? So what? It does help explain why we do better jumps than any athlete. If I'm a speedy character and inhouse, I just toggle the walk button. I think slowing down to walk would feel awkward at best (annoying to most). And becoming glued to the stair at high speed, well :P The jump ending animation in FONV might improve how the landings look, but other than that slowing down is my only suggestion.

All stairs should have a banister which you can slide down.

Problem solved. :goodjob:

I would hope it would be somewhat similar to Red Dead Redemption. The Euphoria system handles animation and gravity very realistically. When you do decide to run down stairs, you run sort of sideways, and it is slower than a full run, but still much quicker than walking them.

The falling animation does need a serious overhaul from Oblivion though, especially with the emphasis on verticality(apparently that is not a word) in Skyrim. If you begin falling for more than 10 or so feet, you should start to flail and tumble in the air (again similar to Red Dead), as opposed to maintaining a static pose all the way to your death. Also, if you hit an obstacle while falling, you should go into ragdoll, as opposed to just stopping and standing, and then falling down dead. I am hoping the Havok animation system improves these areas greatly!
