Another baffling oversight by Bethesda

Post » Fri Oct 14, 2011 2:50 pm

It says in manual that once you are arrested, all stolen items, including ones you have stolen while undetected, will be confiscated from your person, a la Oblivion.

It would blow my mind if one of the diehard Bethesda apologists tried to defend this decision. It makes ZERO sense for something that I stole from a lone man's shack out in the mountains after murdering him will be identified by a guard as stolen goods. How has Bethesda not addressed this issue yet?

I don't.

Well, I guess I'll still be using the "oh-crap-I've-been-seen-committing-a-crime-I'll-now-drop-everything-I've-stolen-before-the-guards-catch-me" technique...

It's intentional, therefore it's not an oversight.

I like it. This balances the crime system out, in Skyrim there are 9 holds so it's a bit easier to get away with murder, also there are supposedly no psychic guards so this makes up for those two. It makes you more cautious to not get caught.

That's the best argument you got? Seriously?

Nothing is balanced out. As Nordic Ninja pointed out, you could simply drop all your stolen goods and recover them later.

Why would Beth do this intentionally, again?

I hate items being marked as stolen... makes zero sense and ruins a lot of the fun of thievery in the game. First thing I'm modding out.

It's true, though. I would have said it, but he beat me to it.

I seriously don't see the problem with it. If you have one don't get caught, it's obviously meant to balance it out. And I'd love for you to call me a die hard Beth apologist.

It's an abstraction, a major consequence of being arrested, and I'm perfectly okay with it.

As I mentioned earlier, absolutely nothing is balanced out. You simply drop all your stolen items and pick them up after paying your fine.

I would prefer it to be you can still sell them but they get taken away when arrested. It balances it out more, for RP characters. Others just drop stuff. They could make it so people see your stuff and come pick it up whilst you're in jail/paying gold ?

Then what's the problem? And you didn't mention it earlier, you edited it at the same time I posted.

All stolen items have a red hand print magically appear on them. Look in your inventory, it's there. That's how honest merchants know not to buy them and fences do. The guards see a red hand pint on something in your procession, you're screwed. :)

Yes, it will make us more cautious, sure. But only because we're trying to work around a bad decision in game design. That's not very good. If I had to come up with ways of punishing people for getting caught, I'd do something more like... Make it so that some guards will take ALL your items and release you from jail with nothing, just because that's the crime system of that particular town. Other towns/cities may have different rules.

Something that makes sense, in other words.

It's an abstraction, a major consequence of being arrested, and I'm perfectly okay with it.

A consequence that has no bearing on realism. Skyrim is an attempt at a realistic game. This has no part here.

Does this strike you as good design? It would be a different thing if they picked up your stolen goods from the ground as well; that would indeed add the balance you were referring to.

I think you're looking for immesion, not balance.

It's the balance of consequence.

Maybe they WILL pick up dropped items that were stolen...

Anyway, a TRUE thief never gets caught.

This "baffling oversight" is actually only a hindrance to noobs.
