Another desperate try

Post » Sun Oct 10, 2010 9:29 am

It is sooo hard. I cant find that one character I can stick with. But I try to and I think about it every time I have nothing to do. Even at night in my bed before sleeping because I cant believe that I cant find an appropriate character.

So now another try. The idea came last night.

I thought about making my character have Akaviri blood in his veins. In particular Tsaesci blood. I have Supreme Magicka which gives me cool poison spells that would be very fitting. And of course I would be born under the Serpent Sign.

Do you have any ideas on this?

I thought of that in the past, while Akavir was invading Tamriel, something very bad happened. Thats the way this bloodline was born. Of course, nobody knows about their secret.

Should my character then be a Vampire? Because I read about that Tsaesci are a "vampiric snake race".

Its only a vague idea, because Im really desperate at the moment. I have no more ideas that are really cool.

I would then still have to think about what are his goals and motivation and so on...

Way cool idea. I've actually been thinking of RPing an Akaviri character, I've just never gotten around to it. Not a Tsaesci, though, because they're just plain scary. :P

I would go for a vampire, because of the Vampire Serpent-part. I would also go for some really tall race, as Tsaesci are described as "tall, beautiful (if frightening), [and] covered in golden scales"... So maybe a character who's blond-haired, really tall and beautiful, but not in a cute way?

If you're on PC, you could also see what kind of mods are out there. At some point I know someone was planning a Tsaesci playable race for Morrowind, you could see if that idea's been converted over to Oblivion as well.

EDIT: I'm an idiot, of course you're on PC if you talked about Supreme Magicka in your OP...

I actually found a Tsaesci Race: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22471

But I dont know ... Somehow they look cool, but I think it would be very odd to play with such an appearance ... Would be really difficult to justify that any NPC speaks with you.

I also considered using the Argonian Eye Textures (like in the Tsaesci mod above) and combining them with a normal race. This wouldn't be too odd but nevertheless different.

For my characters story, I thought about that my family emigrated from Tamriel to the Shivering Isles because many people were disgusted about them and even hunted them. In the Shivering Isles, their differentness was not only tolerated, but even appreciated. Sheogorath was so pleased and amused about their crazy story that he even allowed them to walk between Mundus and the Isles. Well, until the day where the Gatekeeper was built ... Its a real shame that my character, born on the Isles, was on his first journey to Tamriel exactly at that time ... Now he is cut off from his family...

Another option would obviously be the Dark Brotherhood.

Wow, those look scary... And I wouldn't say very beautiful, which is supposed to be part of the lore. Well, to each their own. :P Probably if your character's Tsaesci blood is waaaay in the past, I think they could (/ should) look completely normal, aside from small things like the eyes you mentioned or a very golden complexion/hair and being very tall/beautiful.

The Dark Brotherhood would be smart lorewise too, maybe your character could be bitter towards the Morag Tong because of their role in killing one of the Tsaesci Potentates and wants to join Morag Tong's enemy to become the leader of the Db and use it to have revenge on the Morag Tong... or something like that.

Okay, thank you!

I think about Vampirism at the moment ... Should I make it that i have to drink every day because I need it to survive or should I not drink blood at all, resulting in that all people see me as some creepy creature and dont want to talk to me?

I thought about downloading a Vampire Overhaul, but I couldnt find one that fits to what I want.

May I ask you this: Why do you not like your character? What is it that you do or that happens that - click ! - you feel it is empty ?

How are you playing hte game, are you trying to do every possible quest, earning every possible item, maxing every reward, attribute pts....?

Maybe you are conceiving your character in a way but end up 'using' him in another way, disconnected with your original intent.

Whats the reason ... hmm

Good question.

How do I play the game? With my former characters, I tried to do all quests and get all cool items. With my newer characters, I want to do this "roleplaying" thing, which means not caring for efficient leveling, give them weaknesses, do only one or max two guilds, but only get the master of one guild. And things like No fast traveling.

One big problem is the lack of any kind of achievement while roleplaying. I take a look into the future of this character and I see nothing. Sure he levels up and becomes stronger, but I dont even know if I really want this. I dont want the strongest character with perfect skills, I want a realistic character. But playing for weeks and months and in the end have nothing to show is somehow scaring me.

So to face this problem, he needs to have a believable greater goal that he gets closer to during the game.

Another big problem is the lack of things to do I always have while roleplaying. He seems to be doing the same things the whole time and that gets boring after a while. An atronach mage will be searching for magicka ingredients all the time while a thief will do nothing else than break into houses and sometimes dungeons and steal things. It gets boring to do this the whole time without particular instructions like in quests.

And then there is the problem that I want to do specific things and they dont fit to my character. for example, I love the Shivering Isles, but how to implement that? To live on the Shivering Isles, my character would have to be mad and then he becomes unreal and to identify with a mad character seems to be rather difficult.. Becoming the madgod would mean that it would be very unrealistic to do smaller things like breaking into houses. A god breaking into houses? How unrealistic is this?
I would love to do a new mod questline that introduces a new Knight Order after the main quest. But you have to be saviour of Cyrodiil and probably a Knight because otherwise its not realistic. But I hate playing a melee character because they are so boring. I like mages or thieves (thieves more than mages though).

Also, if playing e.g. a thief, I cant join the Mages Guild, this wouldnt fit. But I need it to enchant my things.

I had one single character in my whole Oblivion Playtime that I really played for a long time without getting bored. He was a necromancer, practising the dark arts with good intention: To cheat death and save his friends from vanishing from the world. He had incredible fear of loosing them and he desperately tried everything to prevent that. He was closely before transforming into a Lich, but he couldn't stand the sacrifice he would have to make for this, and he feared that as a Lich he would be a monster and his friends would leave him. But he did one big mistake and he couldn't stand the burden of having killed his greatest love, Antoinetta Marie. He did it because he wanted to get in favour of Sithis and he hoped that once he is Listener, Sithis would give him the power to prevent souls from being send to the void and that he would send Antoinettas and his friends souls back to Mundus. Thats the reason why he killed her and his friends in the Sanctuary because he actually thought that he could bring them back later. But once he was Listener, he realized that Sithis didnt speak to him, so he got mad and finally killed himself in the hope that he could now rest with his friends and Antoinetta in eternity.
But again, this character wasnt really roleplaying in the sense of it. He had this huge story, but after all he ended up doing every single questline except the Fighters Guild. By the end of his "career", he was Madgod, Listener, holy Crusader, Arch Mage, Gray Fox and Champion of Cyrodiil all in one, and that is of course very very unrealistic.

I would love to play the game like writing a book. There is a special problem, and a goal my character has. He has a personality, and he meets new friends and enemies during his adventure and grows in skills and changes in personality. But writing such a story in Oblivion seems difficult because I cant really speak to NPCs, and pretending to do so doesnt get me, I cant find an appropriate enemy and I cant find a greater goal that is worth fighting for.

Also, my character should be unique. He should grow into something that you can be proud of.

What you seek are worthy goals. If you cannot make the leap from hearing "I saw a mudcrab the other day," to "Let's see if we can refill that quiver of yours while you tell me of your recent adventures, my Apprentice," then you are limited to strictly what the game provides. If so, play it, enjoy it, move on. To bring Oblivion to 'everlasting' adventure status, I find allowing my character to maintain a detailed journal is key. That is where the mudcrab talk is turned into desperate pleas for help or flirting or threatening or major choices with consequences. That is where NPCs come to life.

I find that writing supports my play and play supports my writing. Over the years we have developed a fine balance. Her journal procedes at a much slower pace than she is capable of playing (voracious little dungeon diver that she is), so when not engaged in activities that directly support her story, she enjoys expeditions to visit friends all over Cyrodiil and clearing respawning dungeons.

Goals? Well, Buffy is living her life. It is a neverending story (elves live an awfully long time). She is so very easily distracted and has a short attention span, but her current big 'goal' if you will, is to see if the spark she thinks maybe she detects between herself and Savlian Matius is real or imagined. Since is so hard to tell with that flaming gate in the middle of everything, it needs to be closed. Savlian told her to stay away until it was closed. She is now, over a year later, beginning to realize that the Legion is struggling to hold the outlying provinces together and is unlikely to send an army to close that gate. She realizes the gate will not be closed if she doesn't help. Her problem is that she is scared to death of Daedra. She is gradually visiting Daedric Shrines - hoping that one of them can help her figure out how to get better at killing Deadra. She is also, in her travels trying to recruit assistance to help man that barraicade at Kvatch. Someday, she hopes she may be able to help close that gate, or at least go inside to scout it out for Savlian. She hesitantly even imagines that perhaps he would welcome her assistance in rebuilding his city. . . .

That is just one of so very many major story arcs in the works. That one major story arc will require about 200,000 words in her journal over the course of about 125 chapters, and is barely one third complete at this point. So many stories, so little time. . . . :)

Acadian, I have three questions.

1) Do you play in first or third person mod? You seem to see Buffy as a different person than you so I think third person would be appropriate...but first person seems more immersive...so what did you choose?
2) Do you use an overhaul or any other mods?
3) What questlines have you exactly done and how far have you done them? Are you leader of a faction or are you ever going to be one?

Im sorry but I just want to understand roleplaying ^_^ I think all I need is a "click" moment...

Different players can roleplay quite differently. Many 'become' their character. I do not. I travel with her. I truly hope you can find a character who speaks to your heart and excites your imagination to sing.

1. We flip between 1st and 3d person all the time. We use the DarN Dark interface mod and can see our crosshairs in either. I travel with Buffy, but have no substance on Nirn; therefore, I travel inside her head. I can see around her as well as through her eyes. We can feel each others feelings, but in the interest of privacy, can not read each others' thoughts unless one of us projects them to the other (as we often do). On Nirn, she calls the shots. I offer advice and we discuss things, but it is her butt on the line so it is her path to choose. The role reverses when not in Tamriel - that is, she travels in my head without physical substance on earth.

2. We could play just fine without mods, but we do use several (no overhauls). Horse mods, saddlebags, portable campsite, cosmetic and clothing mods. Of these, I believe her portable campsite mod adds the most to our RP.

3. Buffy is a Journeyman (very low) in the guild of mages, and a graduate of the Arcane University. She will never progress to the point where some of her friends in the guild start getting killed. She trusts me to cue her on things like that. It would break her heart to have the whole guildhall in Bruma slaughtered for example, so I will guide her enough to avoid that. Similarly, she will never see the death of Arch Mage Traven. It is no price to pay, really. Buffy is not interested in being in charge of anything - she is more of a supporting follower when it comes to things like that.

Similarly, she will play an important role in the Oblivion Crisis, but it is not she who will become the Champion of Cyrodiil.

She was approached by the DB - Earana threatened to kill Buffy, but she never will again. Buffy balked at killing Rufio though since he was no threat to her.

She won't touch melee weapons, so I don't expect her to join the FG.

As a mystic archer, she knows how to enchant trinkets and make potions for profit, so there is no need to steal stuff; that said, I will perhaps someday encourage her to join the TG. She is likely to trust me, even while not understanding why. I think she will ultimately adore restoring Corvus to Milona, and then probably turn the TG over to her friend Methredhel.

She has done several of the Daedric Shrine quests for reasons I mentioned in my earlier post above. She is quite ashamed that she helped Sheo ruin Borderwatch, so she is now very quick to walk away from Daedra Lords who ask her to do unsavory things. I think I am safe in predicting that she will never kill a unicorn or cause a paladin to break his oath for example.

I would guess she has completed perhaps 15% of all the quests in the game in her 550 hours of play - so, as you see, most of her activities are not quest related. When she does do a quest, she makes a massive production out of it, expanding it in all kinds of directions.

But I think I may have an idea that could work out. I will sleep over it.

There are many good sources to help you with trying to find 'your path', but ultimately it is you who will see any meaning in it.

I have limited examples to give (due to "$ome con$traint$" like my comp not being enough for O), but here are a few things that are crystal for two of my characters - a shadow assassin and a paladin:

- none does the Arena figths. Yes, they are actually fine, but they do not fit an assassin who wants to remain undetected, nor a paladin whose driver is quests of honour and protection;
- while my SA does all guild quests (specially the DB and thieves), coz her goal is to gain closest access possible to the rulers of Cyrodil, my pally cannot conceive doing any of the two mentioned (unless i have in my mind the story of a fallen / betrayed knight becoming a blackguard, which i do not);
- while the SA takes the most valuable loot she *can* carry (up to a total of 60-70 pounds, a limit I personally impose on a fragile strength-30 female), my paladin earns his $. Its very anti-pally to pick locks and loot corpses - UNLESS it is a quest item;
- I may be able to figure my SA using a daedric bow, though rp-wise the black bow makes more sense: it weighs just 8 ps x the 21 from daedric. But I cannot conceive my pally using daedric swords (or armour), only coz they're more powerful: he sticks with silver longsword and steel armour (since there is no silver),
...

What about a trader that has a shop at the Shivering Isles and sells things from Mundus there?

I could start collecting all sorts of things, and do e.g. dungeon diving with the purpose of finding new stuff I can "sell".

I could pretend that I get orders from the people at the Shivering Isles (be it in New Sheoth or in some villages) and that I have to deliver the article to them. But I have to think about the payment. Just cheating it through the console is somehow stupid.

And I could get a house mod for New Sheoth where I can set up my shop in. Then I could use another house mod to pretend that I expand my shop.

Maybe I could open a "marketplace" in New Sheoth where I arrange some tables (Imperial Furniture, or do you know a better one?) and use a Companion Mod to pretend that these are my sellers.

Any other ideas?

edit: Skills could be:
- Mercantile, Alchemy, Armorer as job skills: I brew potions and poisons for my shop, I grind the weapons before I sell them, and of course I have to be good at mercantile because im a merchant.
- Sneak, Marksman, Blade, Light Armor for exploring and adventuring in order to find new things to sell.

Return to IV - Oblivion
