Anti-aliasing in Crysis 2

Post » Wed Apr 25, 2012 11:22 am

I just installed and played Crysis 2 for the first time yesterday,
and this is my experience with trying to enable anti-aliasing in the game,
on my AMD HD6670 GPU while playing it on the Extreme setting:

*Forced AA in drivers: does not work.

In autoexec.cfg file:

*r_FSAA = 1: does not work. Produces no effect.
*r_UseEdgeAA = 1, 2 or 3: does not work either. Regardless of value.
Produces no effect. So I just set it to "0".
*r_PostMSAA = 2: this is the only anti-aliasing mode that works, post-processed multi-sampling.

So what is the deal, does forced on AA through drivers only work on Nvidia hardware?
Has anyone been able to use Edge AA on AMD hardware?
I am wondering why the Edge AA custom variable exists if it has no effect.

I'm not too sure on AA myself but here are my findings.

r_postMsaa = 1 is the best setting for me, all others produce shimmering on fine details.

r_UseEdgeeAA only affects foliage. It blurs the edges of trees, leaves and grasses etc.

You can use SGSSAA with the nVidia cards but this is a very expensive technique. It does look awesome though.

There may be better options and I would like to see some other opinions.
