Anti-handicapped keys

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 2:24 pm

Im getting tired having to repeat this request/complaint with so many new game releases, but bad key binding renders many disabled people such as myself unable to play the game. Literally unable, as I only have one hand and thus cannot reach all over my keyboard. Even after rebinding keys in the options, several actions are still fixed to their original keys (looting / pip-boy exit / enter key).

No offense... I feel for you... but that's like asking motorcycle manufacturers to limit the top speed of their bikes because you have a fear of speed. It's a problem for you... and certain things are covered under law to help you and ensure that some manufacturers, businesses, etc don't take advantage of you. But you can't expect them to gear development of a title around 563 different forms of handicaps. I'm not sure why you can rebind a key, and it not change in-game (hard coded to stick to another key). If that's happening then maybe it's a bug. I don't know because I don't have the game yet. But I think it's unfair to demand the devs develop and plan around you.

On a side note... I see a lot of this with color blindness. Not many games support that and quite a few people are color blind. I'm fairly confident one of my kids is color blind (not confirmed yet). I wouldn't be so quick to jump down the throats of developers and demand they add anti-color blind features knowing that doing it would likely take time and resources. We're not talking about flipping a switch to add these features.

We are essentially talking about flipping a switch (or not being terrible at UI design) by asking to be able to rebind all keys. It's a rather trivial exercise, that Bethesda doesn't do because they don't put any effort into PC game releases.

I'm in same boat. But I use key pad's like Logitech's G13:

Bring's the entire keyboard within my left hand reach. With a little setup time.

There are no "563 forms of handicaps." Very ignorant and silly thing to say. Key binding is a very basic feature of PC gaming, not something that requires a lot of diverted resources. Talking about their choice of resource allocation and priority: they "recorded over a 1.000 names" that Cogsworth can say once at the start of the game...

How do you even begin to describe how wrong this is?

gamesas *actively* stopped us from binding keys. They went out of their way, the default state of the universe is not that some keys can't be bound, this was not an issue for most of the history of PC gaming. It requires no additional effort to *not* block people from rebinding keys.

The devs here have some kind of fetish for it, that's all. It doesn't even stop people from rebinding keys, it just delays them playing the game and makes it more annoying.

It's just *lame*, there's no reason for it other than control-freakism, or laziness if they just inherited it from Skyrim.

This *had to have* come up in beta testing. It would have been the first thing I reported.

Seriously, not being enable to rebind keys at will...I thought we were past that? It's no fun to start the game like this, please fix it!

The thing that makes it so egregious is that they didn't stop us rebinding keys, the capability is built in, they stopped us rebinding SOME keys, I'd love to have sat in on the production meeting where that idea came up - "oh yeah, rebinding keys is a must these days - except for the numeric keypad, we can't have that!" "hell no, we've got to draw a line in the sand somewhere".

"Yes, those left handers and arrow key players, they ain't a real fan of the franchise!"

Or maybe they are afraid of left hand world domination. However, this is a serious issue that needs to be adressed with a day one patch.

Just to make it clear...I CAN NOT PLAY THE GAME LIKE THAT!

I use ESDF instead of the standard WASD. I have noticed that after rebinding my keys, it still makes me use E to search containers such as cabinets and cupboards. Also, if I am trying to build, my E key still navigates the menu by going up a level instead of letting me move around the environment. I haven't figured out a way around this except for using the default keys... or hooking up a controller :/

If you have a Logitech G13 Profile for Fallout perhaps you would consider sharing it here.

I also use an 8-button mouse so this probably won't work for you

I'm also in the works on consolidating some of the same hardbinds together

In many cases its not just about hating it, it physically inhibits the ability of disabled people to play (or even the left-handed).

This enrages me even more about this issue. In my small mindedness I thought I had problems! Never stop to think of players with disabilities and absolutely rely on the need for key binding. I mean being left handed it's for lack of a better word annoying. But for someone with one hand it's an absolute necessity to be able to play the game, period!

My heart truly goes out to you Zandbergo and the many others who suffer this fate due to the short sightedness of the developer.

Thank you. It is a shame that "ease of console porting" makes devs ignore typical pc-customization like key bindings, indeed.

I was wondering about this myself since I can't play the game either since I use ESDF and I remember one of my co-workers had a very short right hand and had a special keyboard and mouse setup like a removeable 10key. I didn't mention it because I thought it was rude for me to bring that up, but it looks like my thoughts were correct. I think it's very screwed up that they dont allow this simple customization especially considering someone who doesnt have the ability to use a standard setup.

ca't say I am disabled... but my play will be handicapped if I was to play this game with WASD... I am an arrow/numpad/Ins,Del,Hom,End,Pgup,Pgdn,enter,backspace,ctrl,RShift,/'][ key player... (basically the "Right side of the key board player") I need all my keys freed to play properly, AND I need my Center mouse button to Grenade, PLEASE FIX THIS!~ THIS GAME FEELS REALLY LIKE A CONSOLE PORT RIGHTNOW!~ when the keys are RESERVED usually means that it is hard-mapped because it's on the controler... let us have our PC gaming freedom of TweakGaming!~

Please head over to this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1544180-keypad-bindingrage/and air your concerns. Would be nice to get a general census as to how many people are actually suffering due to this oversight.
