Anti-Material Rifle (How to Acquire Early)

Post » Fri Jul 09, 2010 6:13 pm

I was curious what is the quickest way to acquire the anti-material rifle. I have read and seen many posts and youtube vids of simply purchasing from gun-runners or killing NCR veterans, but nothing about just simply finding the weapon somewhere in the world that is accesible from a very low level in the game. I would love to build a sniper character and acquire it before taking part in any of the main quest is possible. I have the YCS/186 gauss rifle and it rocks, but I want the anti-material rifle for just the coolness factor.

I have never encountered it as random loot, or even anyone carrying it. Only time I have seen it is occasionally for sale at Gun Runners.

I've only seen it on elite rangers and at the Gun runners past lvl 14 was it? So don't think you can get it early unless you use the console but i take it your on a console so that's not possible.

It is one of the few weapons you have to level to get.

Eitherway, it is far from good, so why bother?

Yes, the weapon is rare at low levels and the weapon is "far from good" so don't get it.
The ammo is expensive, the damage is high, but the accuracy is low, and it is way too heavy, the Sniper Rifle or Gobi Campaign Scout Rifle (GCSR) is better.

I haven't found an Anti-Material Rifle at low levels and an Anti Material Rifle at low levels you won't have the caps to buy ammo or to repair it unless you steal stuff.

I quite liked the Anti-Material Rifle, when I finally got around to buying it. It helped me with deathclaws at long range. But I had to buff that character out quite a lot to use it. (I used the assault carbine with AP ammo at close range - can anyone say 'last resort'?)
But yeah, I think I was only about level 19 or 20 by the time I bought it. And I did find it handy in certain situations, but usually gave it to Ed-E to carry for me.

It's one of those weapons that isn't placed in the world right at the start. Then again there is no point in having the gun in the game world at the start.

Nevermind that once I solved the riddle of .45-70 Gov't ammo (pickpocket cases) the AMR has been retired from my line up and a Brush Gun now takes it's place as the Deathclaw killer.

I agree, that the AMR is not that great compared with other sniping tools. I personally would like to suggest the Sniper Rifle instead, and I would like to provide a quick recap for yall on where to find one laying around for free at early levels (at the end of my rant).

There are hypes on the internet for this weapon (the AMR), You Tube, character building guides based on the weapon, even in the game some NPCs would comment on how the ARM is great against Deathclaws. Look at this video making the AMR looks lovely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J5CM-mbLNE

But when I eventually got it in my mid twenty for my Very Hard and hardcoe game to hut Dethclaws, I was dis-pointed because of the following reasons:

1) Slow reload time and firing rate.
Even though I believe the AMR is more powerful in single shots than some other sniping tools in the game, this effects DPS. Though I understand, for any other better skilled gamers, you are meant to snipe with sneak and complete your kill in one shot, but in reality, I am just not that great of an aim.

2) 20 pound worth of weight.
A bit heavy for my personal liking even I have Strong Back, Pack Rat and can carry a total of 260 pound, 20 pound would have provided me the space for a mooded Sniper Rifle at 5 pound in weight instead of 8 and one or two weapons for repair during travel.

Instead, due the the higher firing rate of the Sniper rifle, you can be comfortable with more different combat situations, with optional silencer. You can see the combat effectiveness quite immediately if you experiment the two weapons on Boone the companion (Edit: by giveing him the weapons to use, not killing him).

You can get a free Sniper rifle quite conveniently in Camp Mcarren, there is one laying on top of a bunk bed; in a tent that is directly facing the main building doors that are closest to you when you first enter the Camp.

Good luck!

He didn't ask for your opinions on the AMR, he asked where one could be acquired.

The only way to get it is to hit level 16 and buy it from the Gun Runners (7,000ish, depending on your barter) or have gotten far enough in the main story to be spawning Veteran NCR Rangers.

On the other hand, in attempt to preventing this does not make you become higher of value. I suggest to approach the community with a less anti social manner in the future.

Okay mommy. I will no longer attempt to raise my value above everyone else with unnecessary posts and will always double check with you before I post anything from now on.

The only reason that I brought it up is because it almost always devolves into people bashing the AMR, comparing it the the sniper rifle, and arguing with the occasional guy who tries to defend it. He did not ask for a comparison between the two, he asked where an AMR could be aquired early on. So, if anything, said posts would not contribute to the topic at hand and would therefore be unnecessary themselves.

Also, your grammar svcks.

For .45-70 rounds? Go to camp golf, or any ranger station near the river, after the Veteran Rangers show up and just pickpocket the empty cases. Not only will you never fail the pickpocket but also won't lose any karma. Then all you need to do is fill them at a reloading bench. The SWC hand-load, despite the abuse to the gun itself, just crushes deathclaws when loaded into a Brush Gun. Let's just say me and Raul are BFFs now.

You had me scratching me head there for a sec before I realized you meant pickpocketing the spent ammo casings :P

You can find about 30ish hollow point .45-70s at the Gun Runners and the BOS bunker.

As far as I know, the AMR is a level exclusive item. Really no way to get it early on, unless you cheat with the console commands or something. To be honest, I'm not even sure I've seen people carrying it, even at high levels.

When you can find a NCR ranger station like Delta I think you may find a Vet Ranger. But they may be correct at lv being the key to getting one. However if you do find a NCR Vet Ranger in black armor provoke him shoot gun from his/her hand holster yours and quickly pick it up. Hope you are cool with NCR so they don't kill you if you’re not wearing high protection.

Also I have 9k at lv 5 since I ran to the strip and went gambling. Already have Merc Comb V2 and Victoria. Just sell everything, keeping only what you need and caps are quick to come

Well thanks all for the advice. I'm finding that the gobi sniper rifle with armor pierce does a great job of dispatching almost anything in a hit or two, and the gauss rifle cleans up the rest so I'm just going to focus on getting those two items from the beginning in my next character.

I really wanted the AMR to play with pyromaniac and better criticals to take out deathclaws at range, but I'll be patient.

I love my AMR!!!! It is my favorite gun.

Probably because a friend of mine has one very similar to it and I have shot it a few times. Sure, it is huge, and unweidly, and quite frankly can't be used unless it is on a bipod or tripod because otherwise you would never be able to aim it. However until you have shot one in real life and experienced the sound, the force and see first hand what it does to things you shoot (if you can find them afterward). Just makes me all giddy and tingly inside.

Sure, there may be better guns in the game, but, they ain't a 50 Cal.

i've seen it here as well.

To get it early on, maybe get veronica, go to BOS HQ, and get permission to buy stuff. Maybe after doing still in the dark it might show up.

Gun Runners sell them sometimes but you may also achieve permission Elder McNamara to buy one. (Hidden Valley Bunker)

Yeah...bought my very first one there off of Torres. Only had about 1/8th it's hitpoints left, but that's what repair kits are for.
