Anti Materiel Rifle

Post » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:13 pm

I have used the anti-materiel rifle, but I did not get good results, even with the needed strength and guns skill. It wears out to fast, and every shot counts. I rather would stick with the Gauss or the sniper rifle.

I haven't used it since my first character because of Strength requirements, but I found it to be effective almost all of the time.

Sorry, what? Did you seriously just complain that "every shot counters" in regards to one of the game's most powerful sniper weapons? If going in guns blazing and riddling everything with holes is your thing, I can respect that, but the AMR is not the gun for doing that.

I've never been disappointed with it. It does exactly what it needs to do: kills the biggest ugliest monsters in the Mojave wasteland with one well placed shot.

My character cuddles up with his AMR each night. I love love love that gun.

Sure, every shot counts, as you only need to take one shot. It is by no means a Primary Weapon, nor is at all usefull in medium or close distance fights, especially with a number of enemies. But, when you can take the time to line up the shot, your fight is over as soon as you pull the trigger.

For 10 less damage (and 25lbs less weight), you get the Brush gun. Which has essentially higher...everything.

Just saying.

If you have ever shot a 50 cal in real life you would understand.

Haha, I think I get the idea, even if I don't understand. I'm just presenting the power playing perspective.

Statistically, the Brush Gun is OP.

Cowboy perk +25%.

With Hand Loader, you get a 1.2X dam round too (at the cost of increased weapon wear).

Since they nerfed the Sniper Rifle yeah I'll use it as my main long range weapon. The 8 Str requirement is easy to get just get the +1 Strength Implant and get Weapon Handling at either 16 or 18

You mean murdered? The Cowboy Repeater does more damage against armored opponents than the sniper rifle after the patch. The trail carbine does up to 50% more damage.

So. High powered weapon + two perks is comparable to higher powered weapon with zero perks. Isn't that reasonable?

Perfectly reasonable. The Cowboy and Hand Loader perks are staple perks of any gun-wielding character build. They're both fantastic perks.

Some players may also have to take Weapon Handling perk to use the AMR if their strength is less than 8.

So in the end, what's unreasonable? Aside from the Brush gun's OPness.

It has slow rate of fire but it packs quite a punch. I'd say it's the most balanced gun in the game.

I like using it, when I have the caps available for the ammo and if I have enough strength.

My current character, however, has only 3 strength... this makes the AMR more like a close distance shotgunsniper, firing it when scoped is impossible due to the swinging and firing without shoots a bullet randomly. The larger the target, the more often I'll take the AMR out in close combat.

I prefer using a scoped varmint/hunter rifle on my current character.

The Anti-Materiel Rifle is a dream come true! Combined with a high Sneak Skill It is great for most encounters... especially against Deathclaws or Cazadores. Very effective as a sniper rifle - it made the quarry cleanout possible. One helpful trick I learned was to load incendiary rounds in caves. That way the first target you hit lights up the rest of the cavern.

I found that Deathclaws really do not climb very well. If you get high up on a hillside then work your way down into the valleys after first cleaning out the Deathclaws, it makes life a lot easier.

The AMR is a good, balanced weapon. While not very good for close quarters "oh crap!!" type situations, it is perfect for sniping. Very high damage (can get it to do 134 dmg with the right ammunition and perks), very accurate, reliable (no bugs as far as i can tell), and a handy scope. I have found the brush gun to be pretty inaccurate at long range (is it just me?), and the gauss rifle/YCS/186 has some pretty bad bugs (shots randomly doing little to no damage, rounds passing through enemies harmlessly, VATS damaged bugged) along with pretty steep ammo consumption. AMR has none of these problems.

I will admit though, after using the ranger sequoia alot, i can snipe with it almost as effectively as the AMR, and its more versitile. Wierd...
