If you don't know the name of the NPC, then at least state for which quests he is responsible?

I haven't found a back up to him yet. You could possibly go in and talk to the mercenaries and see if they have an option or just go in and kill them, or try to talk to others at the mine itself. If you are on pc you could try the resurrect command or reload a previous save.

No worries its not a big deal if he died, you can still mine the place, and even if the mercenaries respawn in side, you will only be able to mine every 20 days or so in there so it wont be too much of a hassel cleaning them out each time.
