Any Alternative Music Fans?

Post » Tue Mar 10, 2015 6:56 pm

So. Anyone here also into Alternative Music of some sort? I'm very curious to see who else is into said music. I, myself, really love the Alternative Musician known as http://music.soundoftheaviators.com/. I can listen to his stuff all day long easily and have over 60 of his songs, with many personal favorites.

I'm kinda neutral to Alt. Music, it just depends on the song.

Same here. "Alternative Music" is such a broad category, meaning it does not neatly fit into any other category, that it really is hit or miss. My favorite genre is progressive rock, which sometimes gets called alternative :)

Alternative is such a wide definition, is it Alternative Rock? Alternative something else?

Either way, it has it's good and bad, just like every genre.

I mean, I like Alternative Rock. Not sure about anything else. I won't lie that I am primarily a fan of Rock music in general so.

I'm with Scott Thunes on this one: 'alternative' music was dreamed up by record company executives so they could sell music to people that is browner and beigier than they would otherwise listen to.

Alternative Music is too mainstream for me. I only listen to Elitist Alternative Alternative Music, shorterned 1337A2M if you're cool

I seem to recall that much of the traffic on alt.music.alternative seemed concerned with defining itself. As far as I could tell it was just a US term for what was called "indie" in the UK, though since that term itself came from "independent record label", its meaningfulness was rather dubious anyway.

That's far too mainstream for me I'm afraid. There isn't even a word for the music (or rather, sound forms) I listen to. Or "Perceiving" as even listening is far too plebian a term.

Seriously though it would be nice to have some threads going that are devoted to a wider range of music but they always seem to die as most here seem interested only in rock and metal.

I like alternatives to music. Silence, the sound of drilling, cats fighting, anything really.

Yes, that and Punk Rock are my favorites. It is such a such a disappointment to know that one of my favorite bands is going through internal drama (again), which might lead to not hearing a new album from them again.

Agreed. I love my punk.

I like music from most genres. (I might be what some call "easy to please".) Punk/Alternative/etc being my preferred "go to music" for all moods though. In a bad mood? Punk will fix that. Good mood? Punk will only add to that. Don't feel like getting up and starting your day? Punk will fix that too. It motivates, and energizes me. I just really works for me.

A friend suggested a band he had just listened to on Youtube that I have fallen in love with. 'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rabble#Singles' out of Aukland New Zealand. I just love their sound. ('https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRGREP-TM4Y' and 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8DEqrZJt0k&list=RDw8DEqrZJt0k#t=47' get stuck in my head a lot, 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqOjVSJwSC4&index=3&list=RDw8DEqrZJt0k' too, oh and 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wAkoOG3HiQ&list=RDw8DEqrZJt0k&index=9....yup, lov'n em. )

Though I was listening to Hank Williams Jr the other day, Beethoven and Wagner earlier in the week, Neil Diamond before that.

There are bands that are classified both as alternative and punk. A lot of crossover it seems. Look up a top alternative bands list, and I'll know and like a lot of what is on that list.

Yup, easy to please I guess.

Cats fighting always makes me smile.. Unless it's 3 in the morning.. Then I get out my bucket of rocks to throw at them. Absolute silence is beautiful but hard to find around here.

I want to live near a river. My favourite sound.

Anyway, yes to the the original question. There's probably a lot of bands I like that fall into this.

In Croatia everything that's not Croatian pop is "alternative", and few years ago everyone who was into something, like rock, punk, or anything like that, was called an alternative, it was a really popular way to brand people. :P

I'm going to take a stab at this and guess that you're referring to Blink-182...It's breaking my heart as well :cryvaultboy:

Any post-rock fans here? Explosions in the Sky, Hammock, This Will Destroy You, etc.

Yes, you are correct. The sad part is, I'm a big fan of Tom, but he needs to get his act together. Maybe the Aliens will tell him to continue to be in Blink-182.

Eh.Tom DeLonge is a little weird and serious now (in a good way, mostly), which has caused him to be more reclusive from the media than Mark Hoppus...While I'm sure Tom has his issues, we're probably getting a skewed and angry version of the story.

If you're a Tom supporter, does this mean you like AVA?

Yes. I find both bands enjoyable. I'm glad that Ilan came in, as he has put the band back on the right track, and "The Dream Walker" had every song be good on it, instead of having the first few tracks being good in the "Love" Albums.

Dream Walker is incredible. It's the best they've made since their first one. After I heard Diary (which was the first song Tom recorded with Ilan) I knew that they were going to go places with him.

That said, there was a serious lack of guitar on some of the tracks... (Kiss With A Spell, Wolfpack, etc) I think they recorded it without David Kennedy and the space rock left the room a few times as a result. I think he's back, though.

Yup, David's back, and he was in the Tunnels video. I think my favorite AVA album is "I-Empire." Nothing else sounds like it, and nothing they've done since it has sounded like it. While I do like Dream Walker, I Hope they do another I-Empire sounding album.
