"Any character you can think of"...lies

Post » Mon Jan 27, 2014 4:42 am

So, I hate to be a downer..but going to be. Elder Scrolls online seems to be another cookie cutter character creator with the usual PVP focus gameplay. My question is why? why are the hairs the same short styles that have been bounced from game to game? If ES:O wants to truly break the MMO mold, perhaps look at some of the Japanese MMOrpgs that so many wish would come to the US. Now think of why they want it? google it. Read the comments, most of it revolves around playing a character they visually enjoy fully.

So ES:O....Add long hair styles! 2014...it is doable. Before replies such as "It's a character, not a big deal" think about as if it were something you hoped to see not being there. Some players do pay to play a game based on if they visually enjoy it. Not just to derp around and troll in pvp...

You have any idea how ANNOYING hair is to do?

Also, if HAIR of all things make you think the creation is limited and cookie cutter, such a notion is laughable at best and CANNOT be serious in anyway.

Character creation offers an absolute ton of customisation, as for long hair style's, if I'm thinking correctly of the styles you want, have there been any characters in the Elder Scrolls with that style of hair? Or even that length? I can't recall any.

And it's not a PvP focused game, there's more PvE content than PvP.

Probably because long hair is a pain to design and animate properly. A large portion of my appreciation for Tangled comes from how great Rapunzel's hair is.

Beat me to it.

OMG >< I have looked at some of those Japanese (and Korean) RPGs, and I HATE the character design. Or, maybe more accurately, I'm terrified by it. I don't just dislike it aesthetically; I think it is very, very bad for women. Adorable infant girls that are at the same time highly sixualized, with their panties showing? Slightly older girls portrayed as innocent but even MORE sixualized? It represents the institutionalization of pedophilia, and the infantilizaiton of advlt women... which has real world consequences for women's access to equality, particularly in the economic and political spheres.

I have a "friend" who likes those games and is always showing me pictures of her characters... expecting me to share her enthusiasm... and it just makes me want to slap her ><

Obviously many people DO like this style, but let's not forget that many people really, really can't stand it  I'm not gonna make any claims about which group is larger, since I don't have the numbers, but I'm gonna assume that ZoS does, in their markets, and they made their call.

ESO's female characters can be as pretty as you want but they are tough, advlt and can at least be made to look like they respect themselves and expect others to do the same

As for HAIR, specifically... yeah, long hair does not look good unless animated, which takes resources and incurs a performance hit. And it's not really practical on the battlefield, yknow? Personally I have short, curly hair IRL, and you practically NEVER see that in games... including single player games with a lot of character customization. I know exactly why; it's just much more labor-intensive to model, and takes more polygons to look plausible. Doesn't bother me

Not sure what that's intended to imply :) Realism is obviously not the primary concern in a game with cat and lizard people. It's NOT realistic, but my objection comes from the particular fantasy that it expresses. And to anybody who wants to point to the naked temple dancers in Daggerfall, I reply: yup, that too :P

Heh, I was just referring to the Eastern MMO representation of female characters, as you described them, I think they are really hilarious looking.

I'm sure you will find some hairstyle to suit your needs....

Kind of being over-dramatic about this I say...

It takes more than a lack of hairstyles to call a game that has been worked on for 7 years a "cookie cutter."

Pretty sure we have hair like in Skyrim, that is, long hair goes to the shoulders or a bit down the back, you don't have waist long hair because of animation and clipping issues.

Now for total fun imagine waist long hair and capes.

Hmm there are realistic Japanese MMOs (I do not want to list games here on another games forums). Also hair is not hard to do at all~ if so many other companies can do it..surely gamesas can.

regarding PVP focus. all I have seen really talked about is the end game content pvp, fighting to be number one. I have friends driving me crazy to play this game...I am struggling to find something about it I can actually enjoy.

did not call the entire game cookie cutter. But the character creation is.. Making a character fat is not anything new or amazing. (now I am not saying there is anything wrong with chubby characters, before the torches start getting thrown)

Simple request...come into 2014, and if you want to market it as creating the character you want. Add long hair styles ^-^ (Not everyone wants to make a rugged angry female type...)

You must of missed the recent video showing PvE content, and that they mentioned over the next few weeks PvE is what they will be covering extensively.

1. yeah, some asian MMO games have it, and it looks HORRID and all plasticy. better to have decent to good looking shorter-hair then have terrible looking plastic hair

2. would YOU really want long hair with the stuff your characters do in MMO.

First of all, Bethesda isn't making this game. They're publishing it.

Also, regarding hair not being hard at all. Depends on what you want. If you're looking for a block of red, blonde, brunette, or whatever, then yes, that's fairly easy to do. But if you want hair where you can see individual strands of hair move independently from one another, then yes that is very difficult to do, and it gobbles up resources like nobody's business.

If the only concern you have is pve content and hairstyles, I have no idea what to say, or even where to look for an answer for you. One slightly important issue however, is that gamesas isn't making this game. Bethesda is publishing the game only. Zenimax Online is making the game. ZOS is supposed to be releasing more information on pve in the coming weeks.

Personally, having long hair that is going to clip through/into armor/clothing isn't a high priority for me. There are so many other things they should be making a priority than hair. Perhaps release more as an update later. I'd rather have basic hair styles and a game with as few bugs and glitches as possible.

The ONLY MMO that has anywhere NEAR as good character creation is Aion and Rift which are both WOW-clone #35235 and 254253 respectively. Tera and GW2 have good creation, but even then. NONE of them have the same extent that ESO is going for Character creation. Also, if Hair is REALLY the only reason you do not want to play a game, i would figure out your priorities.
