any games similar to...

hey fellow gamers,

I was always a big fan of two more obscure RPG's, those being "Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales" and "Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships"..

they were really fun, great Character Customization, Ship Customization, you could play as either a Pirate, a privateer for one of the various nations, a Merchant, an explorer, a smuggler, or many other roles.. you could appoint officers to oversee certain parts of your ships daily activities (based on each officers strengths and weaknesses), assign Officers to Captain ships you captured or purchased to slowly build a fleet (if you decide to do this however, you should appoint an officer with both high Leadership and combat skills), raid forts and capture Cities for your own..
and the mods.. ohh my god the mods!

sadly, I just went to install one of them as i had a sudden urge to replay one of these games, but unfortunately, the discs of both are no longer in operational condition..
as I always do with my older or more obscure games that are no longer operational, I went to check GoG, but they don't have copies unfortunately...

Anyone know of any similar games that I may enjoy?

(P.S. don't Suggest "Sid Meiers Pirates!", I own it and it really isn't that similar... Age of Pirates was much more In-depth, and you had full control to explore the Cities and Islands in a third person view.. "Pirates!" is quite bland in comparison)

thanks in advance!

funny you mention that Jack, its Black Flag that gave me the sudden urge to replay AoP

while Black Flag is an amazing game, AoP was just so much more In-depth.. to the point I would call it a borderline Simulation..

in AoP the various Nations change how they feel about one another as the game progresses, and it is different every playthrough... (example, one Playthrough the British may be at war with the French, but after a few months into the game they band together with the french against the Spanish.. while another Playthrough Britain may retain good relations with the other nations throughout).. certain colonies have their Exports which are cheap to buy, but you can sell them to a Colony that Imports them for major cash.. Colonies will also make certain goods illegal from time to time, in which case you would have to either travel to the Opposite side of the Caribbean to a colony that allows them, or take the risk of dealing with Smugglers... you poor and can't hire a crew or buy provisions? go gamble with another ship captain at the local tavern, or take out a loan from a local money lender (be careful though, if you don't pay it back in time your gonna have bounty hunters on your tail for quite awhile)

it was in all honesty a great Sandbox RPG (as i said, calling it a simulation would not be far off) that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.. and probably one the the funnest and most Indepth pirate-themed games I have played..

as such, I am wondering if anyone knows of any similar titles

it really is.. sadly it never got the recognition it deserved because it was not a AAA dev.. it was made by Akella (a small Russian dev studio most have probably never heard of).. I only ever found out about it as I saw it on the wall of EBGames one day and thought "Pirates, huh..? yeah why not, I'll give it a try!"

Sid Meier's Pirates, has freedom in that you can be a pirate, privateer or a peaceful trader. You can change the ship's flag and I think you can change the canons, don't remember.
