Any idea where I can find unenchanted mage robes?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:19 am

Black Mage Robes would be great, but I'll do with any. I want to Enchant them with Fortify Destruction. I'm getting sick of the look of college robes and would like something new. For me, my Mages are the only characters that don't change their apparel enough.

If you're looking to buy one go to Radiant Raiment in solitude. It's right next to the execution block where they did a good chopping on poor Roggvir.

I'm not talking about unenchanted College Robes, I know the Rainment has those, I'm talking about like the Robes that Conjurers and other Mages wear.

Most clothing sellers have all types of mage robes. I haven't played with this yet but from what I've read couldn't you disenchant a set that you find?

Radiant Raiment always (in my games so far) has various unenchanted mage robes - black, blue for sure, and I've also seen red and brown there. Lucan in Riverwood usually has black robes too. And they're EVERYWHERE in dungeons....

Raist - anything you disenchant is destroyed in the process. So no, that won't work.

Buy a house and furnish it. Search the side tables and such - some will randomly contain black robes. No glowing skull, though.

Gotta love "random". Over all the toons I've had who bought every house in game other than the windhelm one, not ONE had any robes anywhere in the cupboards, end tables, drawers, wardrobes....

There are some cool unenchanted, hoodless robes you can gather from this quest.

Oh, duh.. yeah. My bad, I wasn't thinking. As you can tell I've only used the disenchant... once, perhaps twice. Sorry for the poor advice.

I frequently find them in cupboards/dressers/end tables near fireplaces and cooking pots.

Popped into Bits and Pieces(Solitude) today, Sayma was selling Blue Mage Robes, not enchanted.

I find that hard to believe, since unenchanting an item destroys it as well.

Yeah, I wish there was a Perk called "Unenchant" (as opposed to "Disenchant") where we could remove an Enchantment (maybe even fill a soul gem) and just have the normal garment or weapon.

QFT. Shouldn't even be a perk - just make it an option on the Enchanting table. You'd want to block it for some things (daedric rewards, etc), and you'd need the option to re-name when un-enchanting (else wise you end up with things name "magic item X" that aren't magical in any way). Oh, and the system would have to calculate the new value, which may not be available for some items that only have magical versions.
Hmm, guess now we know why its not done.

But hell, I'd settle for just the option to "over-write" existing enchantments with my own, limited to items which there currently are "non magic" versions of. Means I could keep my gear in top form without having to forge up a new set of armor every time my enchanting improves, etc.

Oh, yeah, Bethesda could put 'switches' on various items. Just like you can't improve the Worn Shrouded Armor, can't Disenchant Nightingale Armor (et al), can't use Shadow Enchants on anything, etc, but that would make more work and open the possibility for more bugs I guess.

I'd settle for "over-writing" as well: they could call it "Liquid Parchment" or "Liquid Runing".

Edited for clarity.

Someone, one day said item destruction upon unenchantment was probably made to prevent power-leveling enchanting by enchanting and unenchanting the same item over and over again.

Vlindrel Hall has one in the enchanting room.

@ OP, you can also find them in mage dungeons sometimes. Of course, easiest way is to add a crafting mod. I like the Archmage Crafting Mod which allows you to craft all kinds of mage robes in addition to the Archmage robes and Morokei.

That's possible - especially with rare or unique items. I've always found what slows my Enchanting (in the beginning anyway) is availability of Soul Gems, but Bethesda could've wanted two failsafes.

The lack of robes/armor/clothing in this game is severely depressing. There should be hundreds of different types.

That's silly, because you already can't disenchant two items that have the same effect. They'd just have to flip that to you can't GAIN EXPERIENCE for disenchanting two items that have the same effect. And anyhow, UN-enchanting would not be DIS-enchanting; it wouldn't gain you any XP or teach you any magical enchantment effects, it would just produce a mundane item of the same sort as the enchanted item you un-enchanted.

Sure, being able to un-enchant something you just enchanted would save you the (small) hassle of having to carry a load of cheap daggers, boots, and hats over to the enchanting table when getting ready to grind up your enchanting skill. But really, that is such a small obstacle to power leveling, I can't see it being THE reason. And anyhow, doing it that way would also mean you don't end up with a huge pile of high value enchanted goods you can sell for cash for more soul gems.
If anything, I'd say the way it works now is probably MORE abuse prone.
