Any information on the Khajiit and Argonians yet?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:46 pm

I was wondering if there's any information on the beast races yet...i.e. for how they'll look (The wiki says that some Khajiit variations seem to tend to be more human like with "flat" faces instead of a muzzle).

In the interview trailer with Todd you could see an artwork showing an argonian (only small, but you could recognize him/her as argonian by the tail), but that's all I got so far.

I hope they'll keep the style of the beast races like they used to be in Morrowind and Oblivion (and hopefully they're back with digitrade-legs now).

PS: Thank you so much guys for this epic trailer! Finally my favourite RPG Series is back in it's full glory!

Indeed. If they actually recognize you're about to shoot an arrow at them, and they know how to avoid them that'd be great.

The animations of the creature and how it turns looks very good too.

Is it just me or is the water in the distance at 1:21 a bit plain looking? Shouldn't there be reflections there or something?

Nothing yet, I have watched the trailer literally over and over on loop since it was released this morning and spotting the beast races was one of my top priorities. Unfortunately they are just not in there. I figure they may not even be implemented into the game yet, this might be for two reasons:

1. It's easier to develop with just your standard humanoids (humans/elves) since they all look about the same. Then the beast races are implemented later in the game since they are mostly a cosmetic change as far as development goes.
2. Beth is putting more work into them (animations, armor fit, etc) because they will have a different shape then the standard humanoids. This means they are not ready for prime time (the trailer) yet.

Personally I figure the answer might even be a combination of the two. All 10 races are confirmed as being in the game though so no worries, we've just not seen them yet.

*edit*
If anyone has a screengrab of that Argonian concept art I would like to see it again. I seem to of lost my copy.

I have a feeling they won't have the humanoid leg we saw in Oblivion, probably closer to what we saw in Morrowind, or maybe something entirely different.

All we know is that Mr. Howard stated that BGS is really happy with the way all the races have come out in Skyrim. They will be different enough to recognize a distinction between the classes, unlike Oblivion where a few were blurred. How much distinction will there be? Anyone's guess at this point.

Todd isn't a JRPG fan(cat girls) so I don't think they'll use the human-like Khajiits.

Yeah I thought that too. But with it, my worries follow: Maybe there're not putting enough time into the beast races.

On the other hand, I guess I'm too worried right now. The game will be awesome, no matter what happens.

Still not seen a fair amount of races yet, Ive seen one dark elf male being stabbed (minus the face), one wood elf male(walking near the player in the hooded robes) and one high elf female sitting down in a tavern while someone gets assassinated and a Nord shreds on his huge lute.

Or they just want to save them for a later date? Maybe a future website update or E3?

I think that the dev's would've addressed this.
The "beast" races will be more unique than they were in previous TES games.

Also just a thought, i was thinking that it would be cool if the beast races' sprint was on all fours.
Kahjiit bounding on all fours like a lion chasing a gazelle
Argonian with a super-fast reptillian crawl (see alien vs predator "Alien" gameplay footage to see what im thinking of.)

Another quick thought, You know when you perform a heavy attack in oblivion and your character kind of yells? well what if Kahjiits roared and Argonians kind of hissed or something? thatd be pretty cool.

Previous elder scroll games include Morrowind :)
How to manage that? Sounds interesting,

They did back in Morrowind (at least when dying).

And thanks for the pic, that's the artwork I meant in my first post. I haven't noticed that this one has the normal legs from Oblivion. Oh well, I guess it just makes it easier for them to develop since they don't have to redo all boots for the beasts.
As long as they don't screw up the faces...

I'm wondering if they stay with the argonians strange red-green scale color from Oblivion or go back to the green-white in morrowind.

PS: Nice avatar pic Zaria, who did the artwork? "Kahjiit likes the artwork"

Well Beth did promise a whole new magnitude of character creation/customization. As a faithful Argonian player, I truly hope that you can customize your scale colors. the only problem with that would mean that there would be an entire rainbow of Argonians and I'd imagine that would look kind of wierd. but who knows? im sure Beth will find a way to pull it off.

Interesting.. flat faces eh
Your gonna have to thank D4rk 0ne for this but while looking through his album of hi-res stills I saw this, check out the bar maid to the very far right of the tavern shot. I thought something was off about her but without the usual Argonian snout I wasnt sure but with that "flat faces" in mind. Her nose shape goes almost to the bottom of her face and there is no mouth on her face, just a thick lip running around the bottom of her jaw.
Have a look

How awesome would it be seeing an Argonian or Khajit decked out in the same stuff the Nord in the trailer is wearing and fighting that dragon!

They greyish skin points out that she's a dunmer.

But it's horrifiying to imagine an argonian with a flat face. (Like Reptile from the Mortal Kombat Series, though I know he has a appearance as a full reptile fighter in an MK PS2 game)

True it s so blurry that that you can hardly make out anything on her face which is a shame, after having another look I'm pretty sure your right and what I took for her nose is actually her mouth and you cant see her nose lol!

What with the removal of classes, race is more important in Skyrim. I think I remember Todd or someone saying something like it is the most important decision you have to make regarding your character. In that respect, I anticipate the races being very distinguishable. Whether or not the beasts have Morrowind style legs, I'm pretty sure they'll be more than just people with scales or fur.

I get the feeling they're still adjusting the appeareance of beast races and isn't ready to show them yet.
After all, it is kind of a controversial factor. Some people want them like in Morrowind and others prefer Oblivion's. Maybe we'll get neither! A new look would be interesting.

I had a assassin-styled Khajiit in Oblivion. But this time I'll go with a warrior kitty, since I'm a huge fan of viking themed things (Space Wolves Player here :P).
I would only play a nord if they mess up both Argonians and Khajiit up totally.

Incoming warrior kitty! *Throws away skooma and grabs some mead*
