Any LOTR references in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:07 am

I've traveled something like 70% of the map, and in all my travels I've yet to come across any objects or persons even remotely affiliated with the LOTR storyline. Just curious if anybody has.

The whole game really.....Tolkein practically invented the modern fantasy genre. He's the first person who took elves beyond "Santa's helpers" and popularized the modern concept of dragons, trolls, orcs, etc.

While he did invent the concept, TES actually uses very little of what he created. Other than Elves (as the word, and the fact they have pointy ears,) and Orcs, TES really made up all it's own stuff... Sure the basis is the same, but TES goes FAR beyond any other fantasy game to differentiate itself, and honestly I think grouping it blatantly as 'entirely based on Tolkeins creation of fantasy' is somewhat insulting to all that work they did to make it unique...

No no no no not what I meant at all.

Yes, every fantasy creator has adapted far beyond his original works, especially with TES. But he was the first to come up with many of the concepts. His shoulders are the ones on which the fantasy writers and creators of today stand upon.

I for one get a kick out of seeing *clever* references to other creative works in video games. It was one of the things I really liked about WoW.

It reminds me of Rohan. Looks the same from a distance, Has a horse for the banner, and is centered in open plain. :foodndrink:

Of the popular fantasy settings, TES is probably the closest to Tolkien. The heavy nordic influence being the big part.

While I get that LOTR is homaged by pretty much any fantasy setting as a rule, I'm just talking about characters, places, or the like. Whiterun isn't inspired by anything except classic Nordic architechure from the early medieval period.

Well if i think about Nordic Warriors i first think of Vikings. And thats no secret that the Nords in TES are made after the nordic culture. Also Elves were that way BEFOR Tolkien.

Why not? Ever heard of an Easter egg?
OT: The sword Dawnbreaker glows when undead are nearby, similar to a certain sword from LOTR...

But the heavy Nordic influence is only present in Skyrim. You're not looking at the TES series as a whole. There are 'heavy African influence' in Hammerfell and the Alik'r Desert, heavy Greek/Britanian influence in Cyrodiil, etc. Nordic is only present in Skyrim because that's what they chose. Sure if you look at just that, it 'uses' alot, though even then just because Tolkeins books use Nordic influences, doesn't suddenly mean he copyrighted the entire Nordic culture. They can use it without copying him or using him as reference whatsoever...

Beowulf was a heavy source of inspiration for Tolkien...and I've yet to encounter any Beowulf references either....

It's present in the entire history of TES. The history of the setting is the story of Nords for the most part. When it's not the story of elves.

I never said they copied or referenced him. I said it's the closest of popular fantasy. And it is. Far more points of intersection between Tolkien and TES than say Warcraft or Forgotten Realms.
