Any mods that beat the Leveling Problem?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:41 am

Well, the Leveling Problem really annoys me on PS3; but I have the PC version of the game and I want a mod that solves the Leveling Problem, whilst keeping the game as 'vanilla' as possible.

Thanks!

Of course there are a lot of them:
Try for the nexus with:
nGCD
Progress (Compatible with other mods)
Galerion Natural Leveling
Wrye Levelling (based on gold)
SPAM
there are a lot more, but I don't remember the names :)

EDIT: two interpretations possible: "Player leveling" and "Level scale of the world" :)

I personally use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14304 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=14065 and I am very satisfied.

well first off what do you mean by "leveling problem?"

If your refering to the poor system with vanilla oblivion levels you up, then that's been covered.

If however by "Leveling problem" your refering to the crap where enemies and loot level up with you and/or leveled quest rewards, then you might want to check out Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and Quest Award leveler.

The way your character gets progressively weaker as you play.

nGCD, Progress and Galerion's are looking to be the most likely. But say if I want to get my LVL10 Mage some high endurance; which mod would allow me to do this without getting overly punished like in vanilla.

Then it sounds like what you need isn't a leveling mod, but a leveled lists overhaul, like Oscuos Oblivion Overhaul or Francsecos leveled creatures and items or Warcry (though warcry is severly outdated)

Things like nGCD or Kobu's character development won't really do anything to help that. they mostly just change how your character levels, it does not stop/cap the enemies around you (thus making your character seem weaker and weaker instead of stronger)

What you really want is something that stops (or at leasts levelcaps) enemies that level up with you, so your character can more easily conquer these enemies at higher levels instead of all battles remaining the same.

If you want to keep it vanilla, I think http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2518 is the best solution. Just install it without the extra items and creatures. (Although I strongly recommend the extra items and creatures.)

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO) probably changes too many things in the game to suit your taste, just like WarCry.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15619 is my favorite. It completely replaces the leveling system with a more traditional rpg formula: do stuff, get xp, level up, spend xp on your character. No increase skills by using them at all!

Wrong link for http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35333 though :) I've taken over development of Oblivion XP and have released 4 updates. I will be releasing another update by the end of this year or early next.

To fix this, while remaining as vanilla as possible, I don't even bother with another mod. I simply pick the major skills I want, and play the way I like. When it comes time to level, I take whatever bonuses I get for the three attributes I want to improve. Then I open the console and tweak the results to +5/5/5. Simple, takes no longer than one spends in the level up screen and keeps my mod list shorter.

I also 'cap' my characters so they can never level above 20. That helps keep my foes from becoming hit point pools.

I don't care about leveled loot or what the current fashion is among bandits/marauders, so I don't mind how the world scales around my character.

Yep, apart from v1.09 and optimised BSA which were released very recently :bonk:

Yea, check out Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. It's up to version 1.33 right now and is an invaluable modification I think. The first time I ever went mod hunting was when I leveled a hunter up and it took - no joke - like fifty arrows to kill a troll while I ran backwards for a half hour. OOO fixes this weirdness. Unfortunately though, it does a lot more cool stuff too so it wouldn't stay vanilla as you say.

I've tried OOO before and it's a great mod, but the goal that I'm trying to achieve is to just play through the story and feel some sort of progression. I used to get really sidetracked with mods, I mean I've had the game for 2 years and I haven't completed the MQ. Mainly because the Levelling Problem meant that I got owned by Fire Atronachs every second; and that I ended up playing mod quests...

Fran's seems to be the best option, though I'm not a big fan of the spiders; I might stick with the extra items.

I'm not sure how close OOO is to Vanilla. It's a ton of fun, and well worth trying, but when you explore an Ayleid ruin that has over two dozen Minotaur Lords in it, you have to wonder how balanced it is (well, at high levels). Why don't they fight Mehrunes Dagon, FFS? Actually, that'd be pretty cool to see. Adding all those extra armors might not be to your taste, as well. Not to mention how radically the birthsigns and such are changed. Stick with earlier versions if you want to stay close to Vanilla -- 1.01 and 1.23 (which adds those stupid worn armors) are good choices, especially the "Light" versions. But wow, all the versions are fun; there are some really cool quests in the later ones.

I like NPC Static Level or Random Oblivion to manage the scaling problem. Pure Vanilla except that the world doesn't revolve around you. Oblivion Adventurers is pretty cool, too, although it changes a lot of the gameplay, so it may not be desirable, depending on one's tastes.

[Edit] As for the player stats leveling problem, just fire up the Construction Set and mod it so that the level up multiplier is 3 for everything. No fuss, no muss, and you get a decent but not overpowered bonus to three stats each level.
