Any one else not getting this?

Post » Tue Aug 17, 2010 3:29 pm

I absolutely LOVED Fallout 3. I got it on launch day and have gotten all the DLC. When I heard about a new Fallout game taking place in New Vegas I was stoked! I got even more excited when I watched the first teaser trailer. But when the time came for some actual game play footage. I was disappointed. The game looked exactly the same as FO3. Besides the new guns and new location there didn't seem much of a change. Any one else here as disappointed as me?

Well, they're changing a lot more than you think. The dialog system has been reworked completely, the plot is completely new, and its a very good one too, which relates to the first two games. Theres a reputation system now and multiple main quests. They've actually improved the textures on the graphics a lot since the early gameplay videos, it looks BETTER than fallout 3, if only a little. Gameplay has been improved upon too, fixing a lot of F3's mistakes.
Really, the only thing that will be the same is the graphics and basic gameplay. But, alas that means A LOT to gamers these days, more than it should.

You can't judge a book by its cover, it will be a lot more different than fallout 3 than you would first think.

Story. Characters. That is all I have to say on the matter.

You loved Fallout 3 so much yet when you saw Fallout New Vegas looking similar to its predecessor you were disappointed?

I don't know about you but I was even more excited by the fact that its getting worked on by some of the original creative minds/writers of the first two Fallouts. (Its good to see the series get back to its routes and have some actual real world guns.) :tops:

Theres alot of people here who are only excited because the 'orignals' are making it. But eh, it's just rehashing alot of old factions to be honest. That said, I think New Vegas will be pretty great, I hope Fallout 4 will top this, because each game keeps getting better IMO.

Think about it this way, the major problems of Fallout 3 (still good game, though) where that there were some gameplay imbalances, the story was dumb at times, not all the characters were that great, and it had a big disconnection from the original fallout titles.

Now, its being reworked by people who have acclaimed game writing and made the original games.
They can also tune up the graphics and gameplay, which they have.

Just because the graphics look similar doesn't mean it will be bad, it seems like it will be much better than fallout three as of now, but we'll see.

As long as Bethesda follows in the steps of Obsidian and doesn't take any steps back when they go on to create FO4 I'll agree with you on that, I'd hate to have them throw away perfectly good weapon designs and features within this game to do something in the "wrong" direction so to speak. (For the love of god if they put the system from Oblivion for leveling in FO4 I'd crap a brick.) :tops:

Fallout New Vegas is like Grand Theft Auto Vice City. Same stuff as GTA3, but tweaked. RockStar upgraded GTA 3 again with San Andreas. Bigger and better, but still Gta3. NV is Fo3 with a new map and a few more bells and whistles.

I think the comparison you should have used was 'GTA3 and LCS' since each game has its own skins, but alot of LCS seems like C/P wallpaper

Eh, that is what Fallout 3 did. Difference is, in New Vegas it will actually make sense. Also, it will be a natural progression, not a "rehash" as you stated.

True, but by that logic, Fallout 3 did it too. Because as questionable as it seems, Fallout 3 GAVE us reasons, The BoS werent magically turned into a goodie twoshoes bit, it was turned that way by Lyons over time, and some remnants The Enclave retreated East on Edens call. At least Fallout New Vegas (I'm hoping) will feel more natural. The factions in Fallout 3 felt rushed in terms of their story, but I'm hoping it'll feel very slow and natural in the story with Fallout New Vegas (So far it feels natural based on these previews, so lets hope what little we've been seen, is what we get.)

Well, the Obsidian team has had A LOT of time to let the idea stew and it sounds like they've adapted it pretty well to the Vegas Setting. Wait and see, I suppose.

I absolutely LOVED Grand Theft Auto 3. I got it on launch day and have got 100% on my save file.. When I heard about a new GTA game taking place in Vice City I was stoked! Nope. (not me anyway...)

Yep.

FO:NV (what I've seen of it), is close to what I was expecting. (IE. FO3 with a twist) It looks to be the exact same game, but with a scenery change, and a few mod concepts built in as native features.
(and with writing that's a bit more edgy, by writers that have tackled the subject before). On the whole I expect to really like it (even though its not at all what I'd really want).

It's not the graphics and combat that matter, it's the awesome new features and excellent story.

I love the fallout series (including 3) & I love the additions I know about in NV (companion wheel for example) & I think I'd love it but I'll just have to pass up this game because I choose not to get a game that forces me to use any service that forces me to create an online account for a single-player game I buy on-disc (even just for activation). the console versions are just as nonviable to me as well.

..... Then there is the fellow that feels the same way, but has Steam already installed. FO:NV will just add another choice in the list.
(if the awful app has to be there anyway....)

*** You know.... It would not cause the slightest bit of surprise to me if the major PC manufactures started pre-installling Steam at Valve's [paid] request.
(perhaps along with a sponsored free game)

True, but its still all the same. The ovethaul the OP was looking for came in GTA4. I meant Vice city and San Andreas were just upgrades of the same game with tweaks, maps skins etc. Right now with vegas, your kinda playing the best the engine will do. The movements and animations, hell even most of the features were the same right through all of em, just getting more polished over the releases. Would the OP be ever amused after throwing in even Oblivion, only to realize its the same stuff (Sure theres differences, but the core is the same) with even the same problems.

I'm inclined to agree that, graphics-wise, it doesnt look any better than FO3.

Of course, thats only a small piece of the game, and the rest of it seems far better and 10x awesomer, but the graphics are still FO3 as far as I can tell.

Just because the graphic haven't improved, doesn't mean its just cutting and pasting.

New game mechanics- Gun mods(ok not that big of a change but still awesome), factions, hardcoe mode, iron sights (thank some sentient all powerful force)

New Story- well continuing and branching out to another part of the universe of fallout. Developers didn't have to worry about messing with the engine to much and worried more on content like story, perks, traits, SPECIAL, and skills. Oh and dialogue.

New Characters - check out the new companions and the shooter if you don't care much for spoilers. They seem wonderfully fleshed out.

They didn't change the gameplay, it seems they improved it. And that works for me.

Bravo, well said Mumatil. It's ridiculous people assume 'BIND BOGGLING LATEST GRAPHICS' equals the best game ever, usually heavy graphics focused games are complete [censored]. I think Fallout 3 and New Vegas are great games graphically. Fallout 2 pretty much used the exact same sprites and set pieces, and it's story was just as good as Fallout 1's.

Yeah, I just wish people would do more research into a game. Basically what everyone else is saying, don't judge it by its case cover or more accurately snapshots from gaming magazines/websites.

Basically:

F:NV took all the good stuff from FO3, rehashed content from FO1-2, and added some new content.

It's the best of all worlds. (hopefully)

That said I would've liked to see a new base character model / facials.
