Any one else still running Windows XP?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:48 am

Finally made the switch over to Win 7 in January specifically for my new SandyBridge build. It's not a bad OS, but XP is just....simpler. Still got it running on my older system though. :)

The only way I would "upgrade" is if I bought a computer than came with Win 7. It took M-Audio forever to issue drivers for my sound card beyond XP anyway.
XP is stable...no reason to upgrade....and if Win 7 on a new computer has bells and whistles...off they would go.

On second thought, I'll probably build my next computer and just install XP, unless I bought some new hardware goodie that absolutely had to have Win7.

No, the bane of IT departments all over the world is software written to require administrative privileges for no good reason.

Second is being forced to support legacy OSes with the sole reason being that the user won't switch to a modern one :P

UAC is wonderful from a security standpoint in the office: if your users are triggering UAC it means they're doing something wrong and you get to yell at them ^_^ (Ok, you don't really get to yell at them, but you get to let out a sigh of disappointment).

Good thing I don't have to deal with them then. They don't even have to know I exist.
My needs are pretty simple and straight forward....as much power as I can afford, configured to be lean and mean.

I'll keep running XP until I get a new PC, which I plan to do soon. Or at least before Skyrim comes out. I would rather keep using XP, but I need something that's 64 bit.

I only just switched to Windows 7 recently, used to run XP before that - but it's the direct X thing that attracted me the most, games are being developed for Windows 7 now, so sticking with XP won't do much good in the long run anyway.

Still on XP here. Stripped down XP, at that - memory usage at boot is around 100mb.

May turn traitor and jump to 7 x64 when I build a new rig... but there's always XP Pro x64 if Win 7 isn't tweakable enough for my liking, or otherwise annoys me in some fashion.

Waste of time. No DirectX 10/11 and horrible driver support.

Yeah. The driver support is exactly why I want to switch to 7 now.

Lack of driver support for what kinds of devices, though? Just printers, wireless peripherals, and the like? I wasn't aware of any particular issues with display drivers, SATA, etc which can't be worked around fairly easily.

I most likely will move to 7 x64, though, if only for DirectX.

I didn't know there were to many irrational, staunch supporters of an outdated operating system here.

I'm still using Windows XP. And by the time I buy a new computer and get a new OS, I suspect Windows 8 will be out. Well, unless Skyrim will require DX10 (or DX11) and force me to buy Windows 7 :P

Just because it's outdated doesn't mean that it's better or worse then Windows 7. I think that a lot of people would upgrade if it was just cheaper.

I have 4 PCs at home still running it. Two of the machines are rarely if ever used and two are used but not enough to warrant an upgrade, plus they aren't up to the task of running Windows 7 anyways. I have two personal computers, my desktop which runs Windows 7 Pro 64bit, and my laptop which is Windows 7 Pro 32bit. There is another laptop running Vista but I don't much feel like installing 7 as I don't really have any issues with Vista. It is also not my machine and functions well enough for the tasks it needs to handle so why worry about it. I do have a Windows XP virtual machine setup though for testing applications but I don't use it often.

How do we know that's not actually GNU/Linux underneath the GUI? (Or GNU/Hurd, or the BSD's, or...) In other word, you have proved nothing! :P

There are hacks to get around that obstacle, if you're really keen to skip 7.

No, there aren't. There was some guy who claimed he would be able to make such hack, but it never happened. All he managed to do was to make Halo 2 run on XP, but that was a DX9 game to begin with, it just had some Vista OS check.

I do. I use Linux most of the time so I am not sure I can justify buying a new operating system which I would use once or twice a month. Although I haven't used Windows since January.

First I heard of this.......Oh, I suppose Windows 7 (or 8) is in my future if that's the case.

Just Cause 2 DX 10+ only.
Battlefield 3 DX 11+ only.

I doubt Skyrim will be like that.

XP here because a virus corrupted my 7 install. Dual boot, FTW.

Steam survey holds some nice statistics.

I run on windows 7 and linux Ubuntu now. I used XP for a long time but we just had to get rid of it. 32 bit XP was ok but 64 bit XP was the worst operating system I have ever worked with (I haven't tried vista yet and don't intend to). At my college they still run XP for some reason that defies logic because they upgraded the computers fairly recently. I had forgotten how ugly XP is. With just a few tweaks my Windows 7 desktop looks all sleek and shiny. The XP at my college however looks grey and miserable. The default picture of a field you get is so blurry and offensive to look at its horrible compared to my beautiful crisp desktop at home.

My system runs 7, but the family computer still has XP, and it propably won't be upgraded. The poor thing struggles enough with it. Personally i struggle when i have to use XP, i'm just so used 7, and Vista before it.

Still using it on 3 systems at home, add 1 if you count a new dual-boot with Win7 and XP. Office is running XP...just got a new Win7 notebook, though.

For the improvements in Win7, it's one of those "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" situations. No good reason to upgrade from XP unless you need to, but if you're getting new equipment, might as well go Windows 7.
