Any other games like New Vegas around?

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 12:03 am

Firstly - sorry, this may be in the wrong section. There are about three or four different sections this thread could have gone in, so I went with this one.

Since playing FNV, I've decided that my favourite genre of game is FPSRPG (First Person Shooter Role Playing Game). I love the elements of this that combine the combat-heavy nature of a dedicated shooter (such as Call of Duty, Halo or Battlefield) and something with a thick adventure-based storyline that gives you the freedom to make your own choices. In turn, this affects how things turn out for you later, if you end up 'good' or 'bad'. I think New Vegas handles the two smashed together pretty well.

With that in mind, are there any games you can recommend that are like this one? I'd love to have a proper sandbox world that I can explore and run around in (and play at my own pace) with an added emphasis on combat, and from a first-person perspective only. I had a go at Farcry, but was disappointed in many ways. Fallout 3 for me was horrible.

Sorry to have been vague in what I'm looking for, but does anyone have some ideas? I'm on the 360.

Deus Ex would fit in your description of an FPSRPG, but it's not a sandbox game.

Fallout 3 and Borderlands I can reccomend as FPSRPG's. Fallout 3 is basically like New Vegas with a bunch of gameplay tweaks and a different land area. Borderlands may be considered cartoonish but the game is powered by Unreal Engine 3. The only flaw that game has is lack of a good main story and you can't create your own character from scratch your just stuck with 4 different characters kinda like Dungeon Siege 3 but the game does have 9 million guns.

Not sure what Rage is going to be like as far as its RPG aspect... but I'm sure the FPS will be great, with id's legacy behind it. While Borderlands is a worthwhile shooter, you probably won't care much for the 'RPG' aspect of it- story is extremely light and pretty much a throwaway, and meaningful character interactions are almost nonexistent. I wouldn't even categorize it as an RPG, at all. Right now, New Vegas is pretty much a one of a kind, for it's niche in the genre. Have you done the DLC for it already? Dead Money and Honest Hearts?

If you're asking about games that have an open world that you can explore and do whatever you want, Bethesda is the one making those. Whenever I've asked about a game like Oblivion or Fallout and who is making games just like that, there is no answer. So I'd suggest The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Fallout 3. I call myself an open world gamer for that reason and Bethesda is giving me what I want. I can't wait for Skyrim so if you are waiting for that too, I'd say warm-up with Oblivion. Good luck. :)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Definitely S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Have you ever wanted to roam in first person around the ruins of Chernobyl, swilling vodka to avoid dying of radiation poisoning as bloodsvckers try to eat your brains whilst you attempt to decipher strange conspiracies whilst dodging rents in the fabric of reality, before staggering back to a fortified scavenger camp to get caught in firefights over philosophical differences? If so, you will enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I guess GTA is quite open to exploration, but I'm guessing thats not the sort of game you're looking for!!

I too am looking to the (scary, empty, frightening) future when I'm truly done with Fallout and all it's DLC. I bought motorstorm apocalypse the other week and I'm intentionally not opening it untill I need a 'rebound' from the inevitable breakup with Fallout. It wont replace fallout, it wont come anywhere close, but it will be a cheap [censored]ty distraction untill I find something new to fall in love with.

The more I see about Skyrim, the more jazzed I get. If it's even half as good as the buildup, I'll be in heaven for a good long time! Loved Oblivion- it had issues (main questline and enemies scaled rather poorly to your char), but the gameworld was my first true experience with openworld gaming. Then I played the FO games after that... dang... once you openworld, it's hard to go back to rail-games

Stalker is great, too... forgot about that one. It leans more towards the shooter than the RPG side, but it has a decent (albeit mysterious) storyline and is semi-openworld, and it definitely oozes atmosphere.

Not really sure about games that are similar to Fallout dude but if you've never played the Mass Effect series then you really should check it out. I know a lot of the people on here like it a lot and for me personally its almost a tie between it and the Fallout series on which one I like more. Mattter of fact after about July or August when I inevitably get tired of New Vegas (since I still play the thing almost daily) im going to have to find something to tide me over until ME3 comes out early next year.

Maybe not GTA, but he could try Red Dead Repetition Redemption. It's not quite as shootery, and not near as RPGy as FO:NV, but it's more RPGy than Borderlands. If you hated FO3 and you could go for RDR for a little better story and worse combat than Borderlands or Borderlands for much better combat and almost no RPG elements. I would recommend both games, but I much prefer Borderlands. RDR got a little too repetitive and thereby boring for my tastes, plus who doesn't want to play a game with 9,000,000+ guns?

-Gunny out.

Deus Ex- one of the greatest games of all time, in multiple genres :-) Kind of long in the tooth now, graphically, as it came out in what, 1999? But well worth a play if you don't mind dated graphics

Deus Ex: Human Revolution - not out yet, sometime later this year, I believe (Steam says August 2011)

Deus Ex 2: Invisible War - came out some years ago, was utter dreck and an insult to the memory of the original, avoid at all costs! :yucky:

Borderlands is available on the 360; I'm not sure if some of these other games (S.T.A.L.K.E.R?) are. Don't go into Borderlands thinking it is an RPG; it is not. It's a customizable FPS. However, it is a very atmospheric game with some colorful characters and funny dialogue. The character customization aspect is nice, although all skills are basically devoted to combat or loot. There are literally an infinite number of different weapons in this game because of the randomization. At this point you could probably pick up a used copy of Borderlands for 10 to 15 bucks. I know I got a lot of gameplay out of it.

Having said this, there really is no game that is truly comparable to New Vegas right now except FO:3 and possibly Oblivion if you're willing to try the swords & sorcery route. Playing an archer in Oblivion is basically your FPS option on the latter game, although a fireball-lobbing mage could also do it.

Yeah, Bioshock is also a solid FPS with a great story driving it. I recommend the first one over the second one. And it's on the 360 as well.

Red Dead Redemption may be up your alley. Failing that, you could always try Borderlands. It's more FPS than RPG, but insanely fun.

RDR isn't RPG though, and this is strictly personal but I would not really recommend RDR for it's sandbox either.
Oh sure it's fun for the first hour or two but then the world becomes so stale, repetitive, frustrating and unrewarding to explore.
Nah for sandbox games I'd recommend GTA 3, VC, SA, GTA IV, TBOGT, TLAD, Saints Row 1+2 and possibly Crackdown.
And Skate I II and III.
And Red Faction Guerilla.
And others...
But not RDR. :meh:

STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl is an awesome game. I wish fallout had the bullet physics and recoil of that game... sniping from a LONG distance requires aiming way above a target since gravity actually effects it... possibly wind does too, but I can't remember too well. It is not really an RPG, but it is a great sort of sandboxy/shootery/adventury game with at least a couple possibly outcomes for most quests. It is a very well balanced game and I think I may try out STALKER: Call of Pripyat next (the sequel to shadows of chernobyl).

Perhaps it's because I've been using the wrong forums in the past, but I really wasn't expecting such an immediate and helpful response. I really appreciate that, you guys are awesome. Hopefully I can be more active and help others out when I get the time.

I've just checked out a gameplay video of Borderlands on YouTube, and the cel-shading doesn't bother me all that much. I first experienced it during WindWaker and Killer7 , and on both occasions it did nothing to harm the overall game for me. I've watched through a few now, and have just bought a copy. I will check STALKER out shortly too.

On the subject of Deus Ex (I did actually enjoy that game a very long time ago, just forgot about it) - there is a new one coming out in August. It's looking slightly more RPG-esque, so I'm excited about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex:_Human_Revolution

Thanks again for your help guys - I really appreciate it :)

If you liked Deus Ex, it is possible that you like Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines too. It's more of an RPG, but plays somewhat similiarly (if you decide to give it a shot, remember to patch it well - both official and unofficial).

I enjoyed Borderlands. The only thing things I didn't care for were the very quick respawns and the single checkpoint saves.

There was plenty of shooting action and loads and loads of different weapons. The quick respawns of creatures and enemies made for some furious fights for survival at times. It was a game I got much more than my money's worth out of.
