Yes. I RP when playing AD&D with my friends. This is my backstory so far.

Jarok Unbarr was a poor elven boy who was stolen from his treetop home by a dwarven warlord who ransacked his village. He was sold into slavery at the age of 12. He was then beaten by his master and made to work in a quarry where he mined the veins of copper that polluted the area. He was taken one day and locked in a wagon, alone after fainting in the quarry due to sleep exhaustion. Light streamed onto his face and revealed the sagging wrinkles that were out of place on his slender white face.

A brutish man climbed in and inspected him over. He seemed to have been clad in a grey coat that was once dear to his master. He wouldn’t give it to him, he never parted from it. The man grabbed him by the scruff of the coat and dragged him out into the open rainforest that expanded in front of him. Dragged into the vine covered building he was locked in a cell and left for dead. By manipulating his love of nature he called to the animals leading a stampeding rush against the foul guards that held him for being a slave trader, wrongly of course.

For this he was carried to a room and sat beside a mysterious figure who stood and strapped his weakened arms to the chair. He held his leg in place and brought down the force of lead boots on the withered angle leaving him crying in pain. His bonds broke and he collapsed. Swearing in Elvish he lunged at the man and missed, falling to hold his own ankle. The man then walked to a table, picking up what seemed to be a scalpel. Lowering once again to his captive’s level he held the chin of his victim and sliced from his tear ducts to the corners of his mouth. He then proceeded to cut an incision along the top of the helpless victim’s gums. By this time Jarok was saturated with pain. He lashed out at his attacker with his free knee making him stumble and collapse in the corner of the room, yelling he rose and charged at Jarok, now scrambling on the floor as the bindings had snapped in the commotion, and stood on the hand of the tormented soul. Finally, he could not take any more and struck out at the captor with his teeth, ripping the throat from the sick old man.

Stumbling he called the last of his strength to summon a nearby Rok to his cause. It swooped into the evil building and carried him to a mountain top. He was then restored to health, although his hand was still broken, by a traveler moving through the area. He awoke the next day to find nothing but a morning star left within a small hat to his side. He searched for food and came across a dilapidated monastery that reminded him of his gruesome past, he then noticed a small difference. This building bore the mark of clerics. He ran to embrace the relief of a complete angle and an un shattered left hand, only to find it empty and containing a single chest. Within it he found scale armor, a shield, a belt with 44 gold wrapped within and a single book. His elvish was rusty but managed to read the rust encrusted tome.

This tome detailed the use of a cleric and he was inspired to rise to the cleric orders and learn the ways that would bring hi greatness. He spent 3 months training himself on wild goblins before strapping on his scale armor and tenderly maneuvering the shield around his unfixable hand. He was ready to venture forth with his trusty morning star in hand. He was now Jarok Unbarr the cleric and would meet a traveling samurai who would help him on his travels for revenge. Who knows what awaits this now cynical elf who can barely speak due to isolation and the torture?

This is the rough outline. I'll add to it as I play and we get to know the character more.

Well, guys, I'm going to be playing an OSRIC adventure online. For the uninitiated, this means we're going to be playing 2nd Ed DnD, basically, except we're going to do it online.

This is a great thread and I'd love to hear more from the OP about how you have been playing RPGs online with friends - do you use IRC, Skype or something similar with this OSRIC system? Can you elaborate on how it works?

BTW, here is a truly awesome short story from the New Yorker about a D&D game that is out of control:

Yep, just started a game with members from this forum not too long ago.

Yep, Gamgee is our DM for a promising Star Wars adventure. I've also joined up with a classic Fantasy D&D game set in the Forgotten Realms, just got started today after a week of character creation. Gotta give thanks to Gamgee for re-introducing me to the world of RPing ^^

You can use www.giantitp.com (Giant in the Playground). It's an entire forum devoted to all things RPing, with all different systems(AD&D, D&D, Exalted, Homebrew, etc etc).

Ditto. I tend to roleplay in just about every game I play, even the linear action-packed ones.

Same.

Its awfully strange that this topic came up when it did...I fired up a new game of Morrowind...and it always intrigued me on how people roleplay in games...

I know its a stupid question, but how exactly does one roleplay?

How would I go about roleplaying in say, Morrowind to better my game experience?

You take on a role and you play that role, you take that character and chat as it. That's how it is in WoW anyways.

Yes I am quite the rper. My group I usually nerd it up with are completely inapt at doing some of the simplest taskes. For example. Our group was asked to kill some scorpions the size of small dogs.
What do they do? They listen to me the evil sorcerer. Now. Here's where it goes downhill. There is a pillow factory that spews toxic chemicals into the nearby sea/ocean. Now my idea is to put that toxic sludge down where the scorpions are. Simple? Right. But no. Our [censored] DM (gamgee :D) makes them gargantuan sized. Now we have to go and get godzilla to defeat them Godzilla gets pissed off and destroys the whole town. Now we have to go summon another person/thing. Then shortly after godzilla has been temporarily inconvienced, he goes and resides in his sea home.

Well, guys, I'm going to be playing an OSRIC adventure online. For the uninitiated, this means we're going to be playing 2nd Ed DnD, basically, except we're going to do it online.

Because our DM was a little silly when he said if we wanted to play a race outside of the DnD canon or edition, we went sort of crazy. We start off relatively normal, and then the rest of us decided to be crazy.

One of our guys is a Dwarven fighter. Another one's a thief of an as-yet-undetermined race. Another's a mage. Basic fare.

Then I decided I wanted to play AD&D as a Tiefling assassin. Aw hell yeah, that's more like it.

Then I persuaded someone else to pick something crazy. He decided he's going to be a Lawful Good Skaven Cleric. Yes, he picked a race from Warhammer Fantasy. Yes, he's playing it as lawful good. Yes, he's petitioning his god to heal people. Yes, I'm demented and yes I love it.

If the undecided players take our example... this is going to be the best game ever.

We haven't even started playing yet and this game session has already won forever.

So, for the rest of you roleplayers. Tell us your incredible stories.

BTW, I used the search bar, didn't find anything.

Sounds like someone needs too be an Ewok necromancer.

I've got too many memories of D&D to list them all, I started with 3rd edition, then we mixed in a bit of the 3.5 rules we liked. I have the core rulebooks for 4th edition and I'm trying to get my group together to give it a spin, I'd like to try my hand as DM this time, something I was never good at before.

I remember playing a Hobgoblin in the Kalamar setting. Now in that setting, Hobgoblins are usually honourable, I wasn't. My character was insane and while it could get silly at times (I was 12 so cut me some slack :P ) it led to a lot of hilarious stories. Here
s a few excerpts from Grazmak's career as utterly bat[censored] crazy and unpredictable adventurer.

-At one time we were interrogating a man, something Grazmak was suited for nicely as he was big, strong and violent. My character was about to give the guy a solid kick in the crotch when I said to my DM "I'd like to convert this attack to do normal damage instead of subdual". I could, with a heavy penalty. It ended with Grazmak kicking a man in the balls so hard it killed him (I got some ridiculous rolls).

-Another time we were sent to rescue a young girl from kidnappers, we just happened upon the scene of the crime as it happened. Grazmak chased the guy down, killed him, then took the girl back and demanded a reward. Not very nice, but he did save her life after all...if only the reward he demanded hadn't been twice as high as the ransom would be :P

Other exploits include trying to steal the beer from a sleeping man, only to kill him once he woke up and protested. Collecting the skulls of his enemies, decorating some with gems (Most of his gold went to finance his skull collection)) and generally being crazy.

I've played many, more serious characters, but that one stands out to me because he was just so much fun to play, you never knew what he would do next. I sometimes rolled a dice to determine what he would do, just to add to the randomness of it all.

One day i was rping myself (mind you i was a young sprat at the time) as my big muscle-head nord sell-sword when passing through balmora for some repair hammers, one of the sleepers for some reason was LITERALLY dead in the water (aka he's gone to the big ash yam farm in the sky) and how did i react? I looted him (i RP'ed that he made all of his gold from only jobs and plunder off of the less-savory kinds)

To this day it still bugs the crap out of me

write down you own background story, establish behavior, mannerism, ideal, motivaion of your character. Fire up your imagation, then make up your story. Morrowind is a very good tool.

I RP in Second Life as a 'dim' steampunk machine. Let me see if I can fit an early encounter here.

Jerhicco Levane snores loudly as he lays against the wall.

AzaleePayne Fall finds the oppourtunity to eye the contraptions and lights about the person while he's sleeping, not that she wouldn't have done the same if he was awake.

Jerhicco Levane's eye opens feeling prying eyes on his body. He looks around briefly as his eye focuses on the woman standing on the street before him. His jaw clicks as he speaks 'Can....I help you?'

AzaleePayne Fall didn't bother looking away as she was too brazen to be shy about observing people. "No," was the clipped reply said in a tone that was soft and kindly, despite it being a false identifier to her true nature. She come to think that those "metal contraptions" on his back looked more like wings, despite their lack of resembling the ones she'd seen and possessed. She turned to head back to a more comforting place: the church and it's hallowed grounds.

Jerhicco Levane smiles as he stands up. A grinding noise is heard echoing from inside him. 'If there's.....Nothing that you want from me, why did you....Come and stare?' His head tilts to the side as he moves mechanically closer to her.

AzaleePayne Fall wasn't put off by the noises he made. Hmm...curious, as her nature often went. Pausing in her desire to return from whence she came, she looked at him again, without reservation. "Verily, that is what I chose to do." As she looked over newly revealed gadgets about his left arm, she asked, "What, pray tell, are you? Man or machine?" She couldn't quite tell as she was not fully of this time, being an old one and of the more magically-inclined times.

Jerhicco Levane stares down in thought. His wings flutter softly in the evening breeze. His eye slowly moves up the cobblestone path to examing the woman before him. A somber look comes over his face as his eye meets hers. 'I am....Jerhicco. What I.....Am seems to be.....' His voice trails off as he leans far forward on his toes. A metalic grinding sound is heard as his head tilts much further than before. 'What are....You?'

AzaleePayne Fall found the cryptics to be that of the proper arrogance for someone of her kind, but it did little to sway or move her impressions of him one way or the other. She could only smirk as she answered him with the same mysticism he gave her, "Complicated." While the answer was true enough, she wasn't about to reveal her blended lineage or her past to a stranger. She also, defiantly, left her name out of this mix as names held a certain bit of power when invoked, at least it did to her. A slight tip of her head at the grinding sounds and said, "Are you broken?"

Jerhicco Levane's eye travels back down the figure of the woman before him, across the cobblestone and to his feet where he shufflednervously. He nudged a rock with his toes as he began to speak again. A mechanical undertone can be heard with his words. 'Brok...En? No. I hope not. I'm.....Not completed.' He walks uncomfortably close to the woman before him, holding out his right hand in a friendly gesture. 'I'm no.....More than you see. I think. I'm...' He rubs his chin a moment in thought as a puff of steam escapes his left ear. 'I'm Jerhicco.'

AzaleePayne Fall stood firmly affixed to the ground as there was little in this world, or the next, that managed to frighten her despite her slight appearance. She lifted her chin with a measure of arrogance to look at his face as he stepped nearer to tower, slightly, over her. "I am the Lady DeRaven," she offered, taking his hand despite the curious anomalies that plagued him. Her face was pleasant enough, but the sinister undertones were there to the most observant. She was every bit of the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing as her other more prominent family members were. "Well met, Jerhicco." She shook like any mortal woman might shake a hand and asked again, "So, what is that contraption about your backside?" She glanced pointedly at what looked like wings.

Jerhicco Levane's cheeks raise high as he takes your hand into his own. His grasp tighter than normally acceptable. He shakes wildly before quickly pulling away. 'Pleasure to meet....You, The Lady DeRaven!' His voice bellows mechanically, echoing through the streets. His eyebrows raise in excitement as he leans inches from the womans face. His eye spins as he examines the details of the Lady DeRaven closely before turning abruptly to his left. A loud click is heard as a spark falls from his eyes. He points behind him, motioning to his wings 'These are my....Stableizers. They...Stableize my....Me.' He turns back towards her and smiles from beneath his mask before taking a step back. He looks around briefly before asking in an emotionless tone 'Where...Did you come from?'

AzaleePayne Fall was not shocked, but the firm handshake would have definitely been uncomfortable to a mortal creature. Studiously, she took in the fact that his eyeball began to....spin? Odd. With an arched brow she watched the motions as he moved back to a more socially acceptable distance from her. The sparks, with her logic, were assumed to be something of a magical nature. "Do you know that your eyes seem to be...uhm, afire?" As for stabilizers, she had no idea what he just said. "Hmm." She lifted her hand with a gentle grace and pointed to the church. "I came from there." She returned her hand to her side and asked him the same question. "And just where do you come from?" Her brow remained arched as a machine that looked like a man was something new to the old angel.

DjNight Fhang: stops for a moment to stretch his arms and legs after the long journey....looking around he notices the couple in conversation up ahead....normally he would engage them in conversatoin but tonight he just the stiffness in his bones to go away.

Jerhicco Levane looks to his right examining the church then back behind him, pointing to the wall 'I came...From there. Sleeping. You...Woke me.' He ignores the question of his eye and turns his head to his left. Grinding noises grow louder as his eye lands on the figure that approached. His head jets back towards the Lady DeRaven as he places a hand on his weapon and slides his foot behind him. 'What...Manner of trap is...This. I will....Not be taken....So easily this...Time.' A drop of sweat rolls from his forhead as his stance stiffens.

DjNight Fhang: see the man drop into an aggressive defensive posture as the man looks at him hearing his words.."hold on bud...im just trying to walk out the stiffness i have no issue with either of you.....ease up on the attitude " ... holding up his hands he shows the man that he appears to me unarmed....."ma'am he doesnt seem to stable to be out here alone with .... just sayin ...watch yourself"

AzaleePayne Fall replaced her previously mute facial features with a smirk that might betray her devious nature. "I beg to differ with you, Jerhicco. I did not rouse you from your slumber." As DJ approached, she would give him a nod, not bothering to move from the obviously jumpy embodiment of a man beside her. While this kind of fun and games were more her style, she'd no intentions of harming what had caught her curiosity for the moment. To DJ's words of caught, she would hold fast to her devious grin and nod in a semi-polite fashion. "I would offer the same advice in return unto you." She turned to Jehricco and said, "I might unhand those, unless you plan to use them." She wasn't the type to waist time with a drawn weapon. When in hand, they had better be brought to use quickly or discarded.

Jerhicco Levane's cheeks riase as he sees the mans passive gestures. He speaks loudly towards him as his foot slides back beneath him. He places his hands back at his sides as he clicks 'Hello! Sorry....for my...Gestures. I must...Be...' He smiles from beneath his mask as his head turns to his right, noting he is surrounded. A somber look comes over his face as a mechanical voice bellows from within him 'There's now...Three of you. I do....Hope you don't.....All know each other.'

Autumn Jannings sees the couple as she approaches a pauses to study a citizen or visitor of this town. She admired the lovely gown of the female and her whole attire before moving to the strange male near the female. He seemed to have odd wings like sails and feet with some mechanical boot. She remained quiet and listened to the couple. Giving Night a small glance and measuring distance between them.

DjNight Fhang: cocks a brow in the blonde headed womans direction thinking to himself how bold she sounded....although his travels have shown him not to underestimate those who might appear weak. He was in a bad mood but not willing to take it out on others....just yet. Looking to his left he spots the woman with purple hair who was with his mentor and had threatened him with his own sword only to be bitten by its curse..."so we meet again" he says looking in autumns direction "still want to try to take me down with my own sword....oh no thats right my sword bites back.....well maybe you learned to not touch things that dont belong to you"

AzaleePayne Fall peered to look at DJ, who'd wandered a bit closer, then caught Autumn from the corner of her eyes. Were she able to really care, she might feel a bit surrounded, but alas she cared little. When you considered your closest family to be shadows and nightmares like Azalee did, there was little to sway you. "I do not know them." She glanced to DJ, feeling a measure of familiarity about him. While she might have turned her attentions back to Jerhicco, she was still listening to those behind her. "So, Jehricco, how much of this," she waves her hand about his facade, "is flesh and how much is something else." It was obvious now to her that he was not simply a man or a machine, but something caught in the middle.

[2010/10/31 12:56] Autumn Jannings leans back against the fence and crosses her arms over her chest before giving Night a small glare. "I do not think we have ever truely met human. As you can see twas but a nibble of your blade." She tensed as she watched now Night but would not show much more emotion than irratition.and a small flash of something in her eyes Slowly moving her gaze back to the couple.

Jerhicco Levane leans to his left looking around Lady DeRaven. He grinds as he holds an awkward pose, keeping his eye on the pair. He mumbles slightly, speaking very softly, almost whispering now 'It's good...That you don't know them. I'd hate... To...Again.' His voice trails off as his eye spins more quickly. He breifly looks down at himself, searching for signs of both human and clockwork. 'Well...The Lady Deraven, you see....I'm a.....Erm...Jerhicco!' He laughs lowly in a mechanical manner. 'What you....See is what....I appear to....' His voice trails off again as he watches the two behind the Lady DeRaven.

AzaleePayne Fall kept an eye, albeit a curious eye, on Jehricco. She cared little that, from how he spoke, he had no interest in meeting or knowing the other two about. The "again" in his statement, however, stuck her curious chord. Ah, the angel traits that didn't abandon her. Somethings she wondered about them. "You are a...Jehricco." Now she would find herself in a more disinterested, and slightly annoyed, state of mind. She began to think the wasn't being cryptic at all with his speech, just that he was something of the oddities that seemed to plague this new world that she'd found herself in now. She shook her head then. The eyeball spinning thing was getting to her, too. She'd seen eyes swirl as they filled with magical qualities or powers, but never actually spin. She turned to look behind her, glancing over her shoulder, at DJ and Autumn. The hair of the woman was intriguingly different then what she'd expect for a mortal-esque being. Perhaps Azalee would change her targets to focus her unhindered curiosity on Autumn soon.

Autumn Jannings watched the female a moment as she agreed they had never met. Moving her purple gaze to look over the odd male once more. The word jerhicco making her get pennsive as she tried to remember such a being but soon gave up with a shrug to herself. Though her eyes remained on the two conversing she was aware of Night and his distance from her. She could wait until he journeyed on as another encounter might harm one she held high so she would hold temper and tongue as she could.

DjNight Fhang: gives a slight chuckle to her retort...he knew that had she grabbed his sword and held on that it would have inflicted more than just a nibble...she would have felt the effects for ages....from what he gathered she had found favor with his mentor and was amazed at Araphels, for lack of a better term, softer stance...this was not the same one who trained him so long ago....maybe it was the pain of the torture of his life or just the pain of being alive so long that had weakened his spirit whichever it was he would do all he could to help his mentor find his true self once again"

Jerhicco Levane's cheeks raise as he nods. 'Yes...A Jerhicco.' His attention moves slowly from the two and back towards the Lady DeRaven. He clicks as he speaks 'I'll tell you exactly......What of me is what....If you...Tell me what....Of you is what.'

Jerhicco Levane's arms shift from blue to red. The glowing intensifies as his being fades. He frown and waves as he completely disappears.

AzaleePayne Fall had opened her mouth to appease her curiosity, when just like that he vanished. "Odd," she muttered to herself. Despite the eyeball trick, she was interested in knowing what he was. She turned to the others and gave a proper nod in a greeting fashion to Autumn. "Pleasant evening unto you both." She didn't move to either direction, but stood to look at each respectively.

Ooooh, I'd love to hear more about the drow adventure.

Well, they had to flee and since their dedicated leader did not spot the easy access to the guardsmen's barracks, they had to go underground. Read: to the sewers. Then they had some nasty stinky hours, stumbled upon a krypta (gelatinous cubes all the time were getting a little boring), and were so unlucky (really, it was all rolls and I had to make the following plot up during break time... though it could have helped if one of them wasn't too-dumb-to-live curious :P) to unleash the lich in there to the surface.
After a long time of three-way fighting, the townsmen then finally realised that the drow meant no harm to them and worked together. And then four of the five had to sacrifice themselves to banish that lich. What a happy ending.

Epic. Win.

However, I think you should have just had the townfolk swarm around them, and then kill them all, then graphically described how they're fed to the dogs.

What? I can have sick fantasies if I want to.
