Any solutions to the whole dual wield equipping issue?

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:19 pm

I don't like hitting the menu to reselect equipment. I've got buttons 1-8 mapped with all I need and I should be able to swap in and out of any mode I want. This works perfectly with everything except dual wielding weapons. If I do any kind of improvement on a weapon it won't stack and thus I can't hit the shortcut twice to equip let's say 2 swords. This means I have to hit q each time I need to reequip my offhand after some spellcasting.

At first I kind of solved this by going for bound sword in the offhand, man once I discovered this gameplay became so so nice for a while. Swithching, healing, destruction, dual wield, awesome. Still, I want a proper warrior type now and I'm not going to run around with a bound sword spell.

How can it be done. Even when I don't improve the weapons and they stack they still bug out when switching to a bow then spells. The shortcut command is lost. And obviously I need to use my smithing.

Anyway, any solutions to this?

Wow, the pages move fast. Don't want to be 'that guy' but I'd like at least a confirmation that it's impossible to get dual wielding working through quick buttons.

The only way it works for me, is if I use the exact same type weapon on both hands: 2 ebony daggers, 2 steel axes, etc. by first going into the inventory, equipping the weapons, and once I see the LR arrow next to the stack, then I hit Favorite, then in the Q menu, they show as stacked and I can map them both to one button, hit the button once, and both equip at the same time. This works for me even after I choose to use a spell.
Ex: I have 2 ebony daggers mapped to 1 and health regen mapped to 2. I hit 1, both daggers equip. I hit 2, I end up equipped with RH dagger, LH health regen. I hit 1 again, LH equips ebony dagger, and I end up with RH and LH ebony daggers

Normally, in your example, if you have lets say a spell in both hands and hit -1- only one dagger will equip until you hit 1 again. OR are you saying you actually managed to shortcut the combination itself?

As far as I can see, improved weapons don't stack in the inventory anyway.

its def a bug only work around I've found is to enchant it and name it and each other similar so there ones under the other considering the list is alphabetized solution solved...that problem occurs for w/e reason when you upgrade weapons game for some reason becomes confuzzled

It is more or less impossible, as most dual wielders will be using different dagger in each hand (I use razor and lucky blade for example).

I am not sure how this oversight got through QA, I guess nobody was playing a dual wielder, I noticed this flaw in the first hour of play...I had to break immersion each time to re-equip off hand after using a spell etc. They should have implemented something like NWN did 10 years ago (though I think even they missed it the first time and had to patch it)... where you could hot button a double weapon or sword/shield combo to one hot button.

That's what I've been doing :) HOWEVER, I friggin hate hitting Q whenever switching to dual wield! It's the only combo not working correctly, shields and spells and 2handers all GOOOOOD but dual wield, meh not worth it. Already switched my assasin character to a one hand dagger style just to avoid this. Bound sword works though as a valid replacement but it's not as fun and there is no -bound dagger- in the game which svcks.

Ok, I had to go check.
If I have 2 individual spells equipped, I have to hit 1 twice to get both daggers equipped.

I guess, lowering the difficulty one level, skipping smithing on like one or two pieces of armor and rocking double unenhanced daedric daggers could work. This lowers damage from you and enemies and your own armor

I have two legendary daggers I use for my dual wielding rogue. There is no way to equip them like there is magic. They go into one category, even though I put them both a favorites separately. There's just no way around it, unless you enchant one or both and have them as favorites. It's an oversight.

There's a similar problem if you're an Archer as well: if you have the daggers out, swap to the bow (I keep both on the Favorites menu, for obvious reasons), and then attempt to swap back to the daggers, it will ignore you as it has dropped the daggers' hot-key assignment. To add insult to injury, so to speak, they're still on the Favorites list.

It does not always do this, but it happens often enough to be really irritating. Where it does always happen is when you equip a spell not on your Favorites list, such as Transmute; this auto-drops the left-hand dagger from the listing and you have to put it back manually. Fortunately for me I don't use the daggers all that often as I play Archer-primary, but when I do want them, such as when getting jumped in the wilderness, it gets annoying having to re-key them. I also ran into the 'improved item' variant, although in my case it was exacerbated by the fact I had 6 of them so improved which rendered it unable to determine which two I was actually using (they're not enchanted).

I can't offer any real solutions to this aside from the usual re-equipping advice, but I can shed some light on why it's happening in the first place.

1) Every item has a unique Ref ID#, which never changes and is used by the game to differentiate between items; this number is what allows multiple copies of the same item to stack in the inventory screen
2) When you alter an item, it is assigned a different, game-specific number as it is considered a new item; this is done for each and every altered item
3) Each degree of alteration, whether that be smithing level or enchantment strength, is a separate category, and items are sorted in inventory accordingly; these can stack, but usually don't due to 2), above
4) Each hot-key may only have one item assigned to it; there is a built-in exception for dual-wielding two of the same item

Because the game's sorting engine does not consider two altered copies of the same item to be identical, they do not qualify for the exception in #4 and thus get tossed from the hot-key assignment. I don't know why re-equipping them makes them qualify to be hot-keyed again, but if I had to guess it would be due to a loophole in the exception code.
